  1. I'd walk

    1. It just doesn't look quite right to me

    2. I don't think there is anything particularly special about it.

    3. I don't like the angle and lighting of the pics.

I have seen the same or similar die crack on other certified coins but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around some the details on the obverse. If you had a more straight on pic, I might feel different.

    What is the asking price?

I'd stick with JB's line of thinking.

show me a French coin with a scalloped edge

Not coins but here are some French Tokens, all with 13 scallops. Scalloped edges are common with early 20th century tokens.

This is for Kentucky Mike. Hibler and Kaplan only catalogued 20 medals associated with the Century of Progress Expo. Nathan Eglit catalogued about 200 in the Token and Medal Society Journal, Volume V, August-October 1965, Number 4. Here is the web address for an online copy. archive.org/stream/journaloftokenme5n04toke#page/116/mode/2up

    Thanks, I'll check it out.

Reverse looks closer. It's kind of opposite, the 20 reverse looks crisper, while the 24 obverse looked to be the cleaner of the two. Lettering seems beefed up on the 24 rev along with the addition of the rays from the torch, the figure on the left looks like he sprouted toes. Everything else seems to line up pretty good. I don't know, I'll say different for arguments sake but I feel like I could explain away some of those things but I don't know enough to be sure. Someone else will have a more definitive answer. Thanks for sharing.

  4. 1910, RM says this may be the oldest surviving footage of the mint.

Love watching these, gives you an idea of how the machinery held up and was maintained. Probably my favorite part is seeing some of the guarding they added, in the 1948 video, to the equipment to make it, ahem, "safe". Always amazes me that coins even survived the mint in BU condition, let alone still have examples today.

I'm pretty sure I saw the guy ringing the coins dealing blackjack the last time I was in Vegas or was that Elvis in Memphis? hm

More video's from the RM here. https://www.royalmintmuseum.org.uk/collection/film-and-photographs/film-collection/

  5. NGC typically will not holder a COA, the only times I remember them offering that was for the 2019-S ASE and the Mayflower set. This is something, I imagine, NGC will offer more and more in the near future, if it proves popular. Gotta make that money.

I think it looks just fine the way it is.

  6. UPDATE:

The 2020 4th edition SPINK catalog arrived today, nothing relevant in regards to IoM sovereigns. They added a nice little write up by Alan Kelly of the 1721 - 1725 coinage but nothing much beyond that, eight 5 x 8 pages all predecimalization. Stick/invest in Southall's book if you're a or thinking about collecting IoM coinage.

Rubber bands aren’t allowed in the same house as my collection. The sulphur content is death to an otherwise good coin. Been there, done that and learned my lesson a long time ago.

The suggestion of a rubber band is/was for shipping purposes only and is to be placed around/over the OMP, SA flips or whatever the individual is using to protect their coin/s for the shipment, thus securing them together. Of course, with current turn around times I may want to rethink my statement.

I agree, in general, rubber bands are a no no with coins. (thumbsu

  8. Yes, first year for ASE's was 86.

Not sure what the label is referring to, other than something/someone had a 20th anniversary (I'm guessing) in 2005 and they churned out a special label for it. As far as I can tell the coin has no particular relation to the label as I have seen this label used with ASE's of varying dates. I wanted to guess that it was NGC 20th anniversary but that doesn't seem to match. Just a bunch of fluff.

I'm assuming this is the label in question. If it is I'm sure someone will be able to identify it.

Do you have a website that you sell your books on. Im going to request one to my old lady and hopefully I'll have one in my stocking Christmas morning. Also which one would you recommend to the new collector. Ive read a few things from you online and I can't wait to read one of your masterpieces. Im going to eventually try to collect them all. Also do you ever do book signings. One of these days down the road I'd like to meet you and get you to sign a couple of them. I love reading your post you write up. You are overflowing with knowledge.

Mine to Mint is excellent, one of my favorites.

  10. All normal, nothing to worry about.

Most if not all of the particles are probably on the exterior of the holder and NGC does make an effort to align the coin in the holder properly. Nobody's perfect, I'd be happy.

About 3:40 he grabs an air gun and blows out the holder. This is an old video so I don't know if they still do it this way and I'm assuming that the compressed air is clean, dry and filtered.

I have to crack all 10 coins now and send them back to NGC.

This comment made it sound like they were originally in NGC plastic then cracked out and sent to PCGS and now he is contemplating sending them back to NGC. (shrug) Could be mistaken.

And that the “66+” was the poster’s opinion on an ungraded coin. Hopefully, he can set the record straight.

Not sure. Wait, S&G just replied.... Man I'm a slow typist.

  12. I would check the dimensions as well, 22mm x 3mm for the virenium (some references list 22.5mm x 3mm), if possible. I would think it less likely that they used a similarly dimensioned planchet for a gold coin. I don't have weights for the silver.

For the "town series" (83 - 86) £1 coins, silver piedforts were produced in addition to the BU coins, Pobjoy also minted two different gold piedforts for each design a .374 (9ct) and .917 (22ct)  respectively. Since the Viking Warrior immediately follows the Town coins and as a silver piedfort was made of the Viking, it wouldn't surprise me if there are gold piedforts of the Viking using the same planchets as the gold Town coins. Just speculation.

( I think I may be able to find 83-86 gold weights in Krause, but are they accurate?).

There are some in Krause but I'm a little leery of the weights and dimensions given for the standard issue gold coins. If they are accurate I would think the coin needs to be thinner than 3mm. Krause has some standard issue £1 gold coins (not listed in Southall) from the towns series weighing in at 7.96g and another at 9.50g both holding the same diameter as the virenium (22.5mm and 9.5g). I'm thinking if your coin has a diameter of 22/22.5mm and is thinner than 3mm or if it is a piedfort you may have something.

    With PM you never know.(shrug)
