I now know why people collects crownsxD Hopefully this is a bit larger for a tiny coin - reminder to myself not to combine images into a single picture!

The later Spanish issue half real is even smaller than the colonial version, hopefully it is also easier to see as a nice high grade example

I may have to concentrate on banknotes now as I can read them, even if they are in Spanish, or get a decent camera set-up or both :roflmao:

  2. Thankyou both - I have been following Mike's progress with his Ukranian collection which demonstrates the knowledge and dedication needed. As does the Zimbabwe series

I definitely need more practice grading banknotes on the PMG scale rather than the UK version and for the area I have settled on the graded populations (other than for certain issues) were surprisingly low so I will have to submit notes. It sounds like it is not just me that finds it difficult to see slight folds etc on scans, at least the older stuff has an end date. :roflmao:

I mean, if you get them out really fast I think the old pricing is honored if you get it to them by 2/1. lol

Honestly though I think it's probably over-due that they increase pricing since obviously at the price they're charging there is WAYYY TOO MUCH demand for their services. And personally I think if it was worth it to submit at the old price it's still worth it after a 5% increase - their price increase is actually even below the current rate of inflation. It's awfully darn reasonable of them.

They need to go for grading anyway - much more saleable (and protected) that way, particularly for my family should I disappear unexpectedlyxD

I agree, it is vital to focus at times, but I’ve stayed well ahead of the curve for my department despite my other activities. If nothing else, maybe I can utilize my time management skills to secure tenure once I get my career going.

It appears your feline colleague is sleeping on the job! I’ve yet to experience the process from the other perspective, but I imagine it is quite the undertaking to review multiple dissertations. If you don’t mind me asking, what is your area of expertise?

He is either rushing about like a mad thing or asleep - I wish I could sleep like that!

Area is loosely Medicinal Chemistry - draft dissertations this weekend were on a new diagnostic agent for neuroinflammation and a compound we are working on which shows promise in treating colon cancer - the diversity keeps things interesting

  5. Nice coins, it is nice to see the smaller denominations get graded, which over time may reflect just how rare quality examples are.

I seem to have bought more Napoleonic medals, as opposed to coins, this year - there is probably a custom set in there somewhere if I can put a theme together, anything would need a lot more examples though as I am about 3000 short of the full set xD

  6. I love that quote!

Droz seems to have got around a bit, as did a few other engravers. There have been quite a few 'not recorded' and 'unique' gold Napoleonic coins and medals appearing over the last year or so - some of these have been from the 'bonaparte family' and in their possession since their issue.

I wonder if the Dutch, Italian and Westphalia branches of the family have decided now is a good time to sell??

The gold version seems to be a reworked die and/or struck over another medal - I am still trying to identify thishm
