Bravos to you, Sandon, but I’d bet very few new collectors ever look at that work flow diagram (it does reproduce kind of small). It is no accident that the FIRST COURSE in the ANA’s Numismatic Diploma program is NOT grading, and NOT errors and varieties, but IS Understanding the Minting Process. Why? Understanding that FIRST AND FOREMOST will relieve the student of repeating the grievous mistakes of hundreds of thousands that have come before him. The ANA is a benevolent source for education. I dare say it is the ONLY benevolent one any new collector might encounter. Everyone else is running a click bait scam or commercial venture benefiting themselves.

The software is so lacking in its own emojis that I’ve been reduced to using the “regular” ones.

I don’t know about Coney Island rides. I’m pretty limited to Disney theme parks, BOTH U.S. ones, plus a one time visit to Universal Orlando. I even saw, from a distance, the French Disney.

Don’t be bored. Boredom is a prelude to death. Visit someplace neat. Monroeville, PA in mid-May, Colorado in June, Orlando maybe in July, or even Rosemont, IL in August. I’ll be at the first three, but so far (things change) not the fourth. When is the summer Baltimore show this year? If I lived in NYC, you couldn’t KEEP me off Amtrak. Alabama is a passenger rail wasteland. For now.

What is the year edition of the Krause pdf? I have two hard copy, five years apart.

The question is whether quality of strike and luster matter to a grade (yes, they OBVIOUSLY DO, and virtually the ENTIRE HOBBY other than RWB agree on this). When an esteemed author and researcher uses OPINION to so obviously lead new collectors astray, he needs to be viewed with a jaundiced eye.

I believe we are talking about different kinds of NGC memberships. Being on the discussion board is free, and NOT the type of membership to which I refer. Neither is having a Registry Set. The type of membership to which I refer is the ability to submit coins directly for grading, without an intermediary. The one for which I pay $149 a year. For those who do the math, I was a serious collector for 31 years before I even THOUGHT of sending ANY coin to a TPGS (old small soap bar ANACS), and I switched EXCLUSIVELY to NGC another 16 years later. And here we are another 14 years later. Still using NGC exclusively. AND I have NEVER “coin roll hunted” nor ever searched change for errors or varieties. I DO search and keep extraordinarily excellent coins, but not “different”, which is a foole’s errand.

I DID have a Nebraska ATB “what’s that garbage in that window pane” variety fall into my lap, and a 1943/42 nickel from my 1963 blue Whitman folder magically appear. I had it for over 50 years before detecting the variety

Nice interesting eclectic mix. A good mix of stuff, of modest value.

Thus far, all of the photos are of counterfeit, or highly suspect, pieces. That does not mean the collection is ALL fake. However, it suggests you should take the collection to a professional numismatist who can help you sort the fakes from real coins. The value is in the authentic coins. Fakes are worthless.
Further, pay the numismatist a fixed fee for their work. Do not sell to them until you have done more research about the authentic coins. The more you know, the better your chances of getting a fair price.

Great! I’ll be there, even if I had originally intended not to attend. That would be the kind of thing that could drag my kiester to Rosemont again, and that’s saying something. Leave time for questions. I’ll be slinging some. It was a presentation at 2010 in Boston that inspired me to get into presenting. Topic? Gold standard. Everything old is new again. I am a strict Keynesian macroeconomically. A gold standard is a sure path to economic destruction.

I have given six Numismatic Theater / Money Talks (name change) at ANA conventions. Are you an ANA member? Check and stay current with money.org. The deadlines for proposals is kept up to date there. When the World’s Fair of Money was held in Rosemont in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015, I was the ONLY speaker who presented all four years.  QDB was three out of four.

But it was the heretics for whom I worked. My only association in my entire life with that party was the 13 years of my employment. Our Chief Counsel was similarly positioned. In 1992 I ran AGAINST the man who hired me in 2008.

Want an example? A contemporary one? Try this. On page 19, second column, Richard Giedroyc, in Coin Clinic, the April 23 issue, Numismatic News. A reader asked :
”What standards were used when a coin grades were being established by the companies that would grade them?”
Richard Giedroyc responded in relevant part:
”It is generally agreed upon that the grade of a coin should be determined by the strike, state of preservation, luster, color, and eye appeal of that coin.”
Roger insists that only the state of preservation should be used in grading. That leaves ALL OF US in the position of accepting what is generally agreed upon in the numismatic hobby, or accepting Roger’s individual and unsupported opinion. I’ll take the former, thank you very much.

I wonder how many unique individual submitters (not dealers) each TPGS has. Then again, we have seemingly an unlimited number of people saving road rash damaged coins in a box or can, “learning” (as if…) about them by watching YouTube videos.

YOUR opinion and 5 bucks will get you a Starbucks. Sooooo many of your opinions are out of step with the ENTIRE numismatic hobby. YOU are the outlier, not me. You are a classic narcissist.

The American Numismatic Association has a definition, to which I subscribe. Their exhibit rules (I am a member of the Exhibiting Committee) for Class 4 - Modern Coins and Medals, the John Esbach Award, endowed by the Red Rose Coin Club of Lancaster, PA (of which I am a past President) states that the line of demarcation is 1960, not any other date. It applies to ALL countries, not just the U.S.
By the way, Britain went off .925 silver in 1920, and off 50% silver in 1947. 1964 is just soooo Amerocentric thinking
