That cameo effect on the 2023's is unreal.  Super-black.  That's what they couldn't do with proofs 100-150 years ago, create that mirrored-black look. 

Are they striking proofs or other types EVERY year for Modern Morgans -- I thought it was a 1-time thing in 1921 ?  What did they do in 2022 ?

Mlovmo, if you see anything on gold coins in general or Double Eagles in particular.....I'd love to see it.

Yes, from reading the Bowers LH DE book, controls on coinage, dies, strikings, etc.... were sorely lacking until the 1900's.

Interesting how we chose the designs for our gold coins and other countries chose theirs.  The Rooser has an animal and a Greek guy I believe -- not sure if any other dated gold coins have animals ? 

Welcome to the Forum....there are a couple of famous collectors who specialize in errors, I am not sure if they post here but I am sure the others here can direct them to you.

Please tell me nobody is buying these coins....nobody is bidding ??

A Treasury official once SAID decades ago that the 1913 Liberty Nickels should be confiscated.  The problem is there have been numerous sales of the coin over time and the government said nothing.  That wasn't the case with the 1933 DE's, though it's a weak argument, IMO.

Not familiar with the Sacagawea "muled dollars" (whatever that is). 

I guess "illegally" produced or released coins like the 1943 cent....the 1974 penny.....the 1964-D Peace dollar...and of course, the 1913 Liberty Nickel.

There must be more. 

I'd like to see a thread listing all of them with the quick story behind their creation...release....if the government considers their possession illegal...and if so, if they are believed to exist or were all destroyed.  You know, the short story behind them.

I saw it all the time -- people would research a microwave oven or an HDTV to death, but then move 6 or 7-figure sums of money into something without doing any DD.

We know pretty much what ships went down and what they had on them.  At this point, unless the COST of an initial or subsequent salvage operation drops alot, it doesn't pay to spend big $$$ to retrieve coins and other objects that won't make a profit.  That's why a 3rd salvage of the SS Central America is not likely.

Hoards on land are a bigger threat to most U.S. coins, especially the trophy coins like the Double Eagles (LH and SG).

As your probably know, Heritage Auctions (HA) and Great Collections (GC) have been the go-to sites for many of us here.

I'm not as familiar with smaller pre-1933 gold coin pricing....but if a Double Eagle common and/or worn can go for about $2,100 or so.... I would think the Quarter Eagle should be $250-$300 since you pay up for smaller quantities of gold, right ?

Yes, modern proofs and reverse proofs of classic coins, patterns, and designs seems to be increasing (more available, more affordable) -- I myself am partial to the National Park Foundation Saint-Gaudens commemoratives.
