I have a lot of fun with them. Sometimes I'll answer in Spanish, and when they find a Spanish speaker, switch to French. Or Hebrew. If I think they understand Arabic, I'll say to them the Arabic for: "Satan to you, O my dog. Your mother's [vulgar gynaeological reference]." If the accent is Hindi, I'll do Apu from the Simpsons. I never, ever say "yes" on the phone because that can be recorded and used in a Frankenbite as proof of assent. I get a kick out of the ones who want to know if I am a homeowner. Sometimes they have my address and name correctly. "I don't know who that is or where that address is." "Well, if you are a homeowner, are you interested in solar panels?" "I live in a tent along I-5 not far from the Ross Island Bridge exit," I say. "Will they fit on my tent?"
To me, these are not human beings, and they do not merit any human consideration. No actions taken against them are immoral. It's open season. But if you really want the wind under your wings, check out the people at 419eater.com. I'm not sure if the funniest one is the people dressed up in Wizard of Oz outfits, or the guy pouring milk on his head, or even the I LOVE PEN 15 sign guy. And if you look on YT, you can find people who hack right into the scammers computers and delete all their files. There's also a guy named Haven Riney who wrote a book called Messing With Telemarketers. We need a statue to him.

That's awful about your friend and your mom. These scammers really don't care about anyone but themselves. They're vicious, evil predators that often know just enough about the law to squeak by without serious legal consequences. It's absolutely horrible. And I'm with you....if I don't know the number, I don't answer my phone. If it's important, they can leave me a voicemail and I'll call them back.

Oh man....the scammers just keep scamming. People will scam anything and anywhere they can....I've had people attempt job scams with me (one had a little degree of success, but I got out quick), trying to get me to "reset my password" on bank accounts I've never had.....you name it. This is really unfortunate and there are going to be some very unhappy people as a result of this.

Very nice pickup, R_Rash. It never ceases to amaze me how good silver Canadian and British coins look even after they've circulated for a while. They really hold up well! Thanks for sharing those!!

Here's a real treasure I picked up for my early East German collection. The 1953-E 10 pfennig is the second most difficult regular issue to acquire in the early East German 1948-1953 coinage run. This one is something special and cost me considerably more than my previous pickups, but still at an amazing deal for this coin in this condition. These are the seller's pics:

So far, yes . But I still have to acquire a 1950-E 10 Pfennig. That one's the toughie in nice grade for early East German. But if I keep watching eBay auctions, I think I'll get there. There doesn't seem to be a lot of people seeking early East German out right now, which could work to my advantage.

I had a nice little sickbed pickup from the Muldenhutten Mint today. 1950 is my late mom's birth year. My maternal lineage is where my German descent comes from and my mom's parents came from East Germany, so this little pfennig is special in lots of ways. These are the seller's pics:

I do have the answer to your question, Quintus. There are technically four but five different Mint Marks: Berlin, Mint Mark A, Munich, Mint Mark D, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe merged in 1998, so they're actually a single mint now, but they mint coins with both Mint Marks, which are F for Stuttgart and G for Karlsruhe, and Hamburg, Mint Mark J. The fun (or infuriating) thing about collecting West and United German proof sets is that all four mints produce a proof set every year and the merged Stuttgart-Karlsruhe Mint issues two, one for each Mint Mark. So, to have a full set, you need four or five sets a year, depending on the year.

Very nice, Mike!! I love those silver Italian 500 Lire....absolutely gorgeous coins. I also love it when some non-US stuff shows up here.....it makes things more interesting. Variety is the spice of life!!

To Chester...I apologize, too. I'm sorry tj and I went off the rails a bit.....that happens around here sometimes.
tj....you're dead on. It's in Berlin in the former East Berlin. While I know nothing about guns, I'm pretty sure 10 Marks was a good price for one! And I commend your creativity in getting it sent back to the U.S. as well. Very crafty . If I ever need to send something that's a no-no, I know who to ask

Jonathan has a good suggestion with the Charlton guide. It could be a huge help to you if you have a lot of Canadian coins.
As for the Third Reich coins, Jonathan is correct.....a lot of people don't want them around and they can be controversial. I myself collect German coins. They're one of my main pursuits.....but not the Nazi stuff. I definitely don't want it around. It's interesting, though....I've known a lot of Jewish collectors who actually pursue Nazi coins and militaria. These collectors have all said something along the lines that the Nazi stuff is a part of Jewish history as well, and it's important history to remember. And they do have a point....it is important history to preserve and remember, but I myself do not want to be the custodian of that history.
I think being descended from East German immigrants and having the culture of the DDR and Germany as a whole as a big influence on my life through my family, I kind of view collecting German coins the way German collectors do. Many German collectors do not add Nazi coinage to their collections and they focus on other areas of German numismatics. I myself prefer East and West Germany. Most collectors of Nazi coins are collectors outside of Germany. I believe that most of them are in the U.S. and Israel, actually, based on an article on the issue I read a few years ago that I cannot locate at the moment. My fiancée is of German-Jewish descent, and she'd actually be more likely to add Nazi coins to her collection than I would for the reasons that Jewish collectors pursue it that I laid out above.

Hi Chester!
It looks like tj helped you with the U.S. and now I can help you with the Canadian. This is a great website for Canadian coins, but keep in mind that all prices are in Canadian Dollars, not U.S. Dollars, so you'll have to do some currency conversion to determine the prices of what you have:

Good Luck!!!

That whole generation is almost gone now, sadly. I hope we've gotten a lot of their stories written down so they aren't lost forever.
