Hawaii State Quarter error

Hawaii collector finds error coins Howdy friends, Anyone see the AP article on Hawaii State Quarter error coins this morning? It does not mention wether they are MS or PF but I'll have to check mine when I get home. I check my home town paper occasionally and saw this article this morning,   HONOLULU (AP) -- A Honolulu coin collector says there's a problem with Hawaii's commemorative quarters.   Collector Joe Au-Franz tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser ( http://bit.ly/AqvsQL ) that

No offense meant and none taken Bammer

Please find below a respectful response to anyone else that I may have offended or not as the case may be To clarify my point and to say thanks for not singling me out, I was trying to express my feeling on the subject of PCGS coins being swapped out for NGC examples in a recent post by Bully to Hunters Gold. It was not my intention too and I did not tell anyone how or what to collect in that post and if you got that impression you are respectfully, mistaken. I did, however, state that I no l

Bully for you Hunters Gold

The answer to the question is Regarding collectors swapping out pcgs coins for ngc coins of the same grade and what the reasoning, rationale, goal or motive could be for removing, as Bully says, perfectly acceptable pcgs coins from their sets, is fairly obvious, at least to those of us doing the swapping. We want all our NGC Registry sets populated with NGC coins. No conspriacy, no mystery, no marketing plan, that is it. Any motive or design NGC may have is beside the point. The value or inh

Acquired a Modern Commemorative Silver Dollar

at a good price. Howdy Friends, I have been patiently waiting to acquire either a 1920 or 1921 Pilgrim or one of the 2007 Jamestown Commemoratives for My Heritage Custom Set and I recently acquired this MS70 example on eBay at a good price just 40 dollars. This coin celebrates the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Jamestown and through my genealogy research I have identified an ancestor Stephen Hopkins who after surviving the shipwreck of the Virginia Company ship Sea Venture on reefs off

I purged all my PCGS coins

and I'm feeling the pain I've been considering this move since I joined a year and a half ago to really have a true NGC competitive registry. The pursuit of points and my own excitement watching my registry grow prevented me from taking the plunge earlier and as time went by I continued collecting either PCGS or NGC coins basically looking for the coin I wanted regardless of the holder. The decision to remove PCGC coins from World Sets didn't really affect me since I don't collect them, but th

Add another collector?

Indian Head cent sparks interest Dear Journal & Friends, I have often tried, without success, to get my son interested in coin collecting. Sadly he took the grandchild to see his in-laws in Washington but we had other family visiting from California with us for the holiday. As it happened, my nephew asked me about coin collecting. Well, I was so pleased and surprised I can't tell you ,we talked for hours about collecting coins. As we got more into it his brother was drawn into our conver

Latest addition just arrived today

addition my MS66 Mercury dime set Howdy friend, Received this little gem in the mail today, it?s the latest addition to my MS66 WWII Liberty Head ?Mercury? Dime Set. I love these little coins and I?ve been putting a modest MS66 set together. I?ve been able to make off with one MS67 and two MS66FB examples and stayed under $28 on average paying a high of $39 and a low of $4. Most are toned to some degree like the 1945S I just received today that has some nice blue toning on Liberty?s head. A

Completed my first proof set

with the 2011 Sacagawea Wampanoag Treaty dollar Howdy Friends, I recently acquired the 2011 Sacagawea Wampanoag Treaty dollar to complete my grandson?s birth proof set and found an ancestor connected to the events dedicated in the coin in my family tree. The story I heard growing up was that Kamehameha the Great & FDR were in our family tree and being of Hawaiian descent I always thought the chances were slim to none that FDR was actually in our tree. I have discovered that I am not, a

My first Eisenhower Silver Dollar

and other housekeeping..... Howdy Friends, Recently added this 1976 S Eisenhower Bicentennial Silver Dollar certified by NGC in MS67 to my 20th Century Type Set. There were about 5 Million coins issued and NGC has graded a total of 1250 of them, to date 383 examples graded MS67 only 61 in MS68 with none finer. My winning bid of $26 on eBay was just over half the FMV of $47. I own a few raw proofs but this is my first mint state example and one of the rarest of my entire graded modern coin c

1878 P 7TF rev 78 is my latest Morgan

and it's in the old fat NGC holder. I've been trolling for an affordable 7 tail feather to populate the 1878 slot in my Morgan 1/date set. Acquired this example recently and it's in the old fat NGC holder. Graded 7TF REV 1878 MS63 and exhibits light orange toning around the entire rim obv & rev. Rainbow toning is present from 9 - 12 o'clock on the obv and 3 - 6 on the rev. Cheek is lightly scuffed with light scratches in the field in front of the nose and back of the head. Coin displays a

Came home today to six coins in my mailbox.

one of them a beautiful Franklin Cameo. I Received a 2011 PF70UC Clad Kennedy Half Early Releases, 1967 SMS MS67FT Roosevelt Dime, 1962 & 1963 PF67 Franklin Half?s, 1879 S MS63 Morgan Dollar, and a coin I have been wanting, a nice 1957 PF67CA Franklin Half. The coin borders on Ultra Cameo with terrific contrast against beautiful black mirrors. It's really amazing to see the contrast of the 1957 PF67CA Franklin next that of the 2011 PF70UC Kennedy. The Franklin just blows my mind consider

Two Morgan's arrived this week

I'll have the entire date run in MS, well kind of.... Two Morgan silver dollars arrived this week both NGC MS 63?s in edge view holders and filled the 1891 & 1897 slots in my Morgan Date Run Set. I started the set with MS63 intentions and thought I could pick up a 64 once in awhile when someone wasn?t looking. I?ve decided I?m going to hold off on filling the ?93 & ?95 slots until I die and have left instructions for my executor to fill those slots posthumously from my estate. Figure

1964 Pointed 9 Dime PF67UC

1 of 10 POP! Hello Friends, I purchased this 1964 Pointed 9 Dime graded PF67UC recently and I am very pleased with the purchase. NGC has graded 10 examples in 67 with 17 finer, 10 in 68 & 7 in 69 with a total NGC Ultra Cameo pop of 35. FMV is $27.50 for this coin with lesser examples in 67 Cameo on Teletrade as we speak trending $33. I paid a BIN price double FMV for this coin. I know...I know....I don't do this very often but I felt this was one of those instances when FMV pricing w

Coin in the shadow box

2010 ASE PF70 UC This ones for Six Mile...Here is a photo of that coin in the shadow box! This coin has the best mirrors really black and if I had a better light this photo would be better still, not bad for a night time photo though! Take a photo of a mirror...yeah right!

Tip from a photographer friend Build yourself a photo studio out of a box! Yeah, I know I had the same reaction. Actually it works pretty well at least I'm getting consistent lighting in my photos. Built this shadow box I call it because I can move the shadow by moving the light source around. What I need now is a good light like Moondoggy has been using or a halogen lamp on a tall enough stand to shine on the top of my box. I'm leaning toward the halogen because I can use it to highlight hair

"Ebay Bucks" coin

Here's that photo Here is a photo of that Kennedy PF67 W UC I purchased with my ebay bucks cash back coupon. It is now part of my 1964-1970 MS & PF Kennedy set replacing a 1964 Accent Hair PF66CA. My goal for this set when I started it was to acquire PF67CA strikes of the proof examples and this coin achieves that very nicely.

dedication, photo to come-

Cash back on 2010 purchases nets a great coin! After reading a journal posted by WKF last October (great tip by the way-thanks) I checked out the eBay bucks cash back program and decided to enroll. Just received my first cash back coupon for Xmas shopping and coin purchases on eBay during the last quarter of 2010. I have until February to redeem the coupon so I started trolling for something suitable thinking I could double the coupon and upgrade something. Last weekend I found an auction f

My last coins for 2010

2010 Eagle finally arrives with company. I've been waiting for my 2010 Eagle PF70UC coin to arrive and she had company, a 1958 Franklin PF66CAM and a 1904 O Morgan MS64. These are my last additions for 2010, unless I get a stocking stuffer, and also completes my first year as a member of this great community of collectors. It's been great fun! I am looking forward to the new year and all the great coins that are waiting for me. Happy and Safe holiday to you all, Merlin8* To see o

MS PL Commemorative

Found this coin on ebay last week & couldn't pass it up. I've been reading journal posts from members regarding coins sold on ebay still registered to the original seller and this is my 2nd experience with this situation. Interesting that both were commemorative coins the first being a 2005 P Marines PF69UC purchased earlier this year. This was a "BUY NOW" purchase of a beautiful rare 1994 D World Cup MS69PL, only 1 of 53 graded by NGC. When I saw it I almost fell of my chair. Researchin

Illness provides time for reflection

What got me started collecting? I?m stuck at home sick and have been using the time to get back to my coins and it occurred to me it?s December 7th. This date has significance to my family and as I pondered that thought I decided it would be a worthy entry to my journal.   I was exploring the bios of other members thinking of getting one together for myself. After reading a few I could see that these collectors have incredible stories of what got them started collecting and posed the quest
