  1. I think the gist of it is that NGC will try their best to conserve/restore a coin, but there are no guarantees it will be completely effective. I don't know about NGC, but I can't seem to find my crystal ball either. ๐Ÿ˜œ
  2. Randomized coin packs? That sounds like a really horrible idea! Plus those slabs remind me of the really ugly original SS Republic shipwrecked coin holders. Except the board game part sounds cool. ๐Ÿ˜œ
  3. Wow, you guys are fast. I realized "assuming" wasn't really the right way to put it as soon as I posted that, so changed it to a "maybe" immediately ... too late, already quoted in stone. ๐Ÿ˜œ If it will just be a separate companion system more used for say bullion coins, without a push to switch to that, then really no big deal. [Except maybe they will grade VKurtB's coins with the new system just to torture him, and charge extra to also add the 70 basis grade. That should go over well. ]
  4. For a while will they just mark labels with both grading systems, or maybe that will just be an option. [Possible revenue generator for dual grading as an option for those who still want to see the 70 grade?]
  5. I'm going to go against the grain here and say it may be a good change in the long run. There has been talk of switching to a more logical 100 point system for a while, which it essentially will be with tenths. Look at our dollar/coin system, intentionally set with a 100 basis for ease of use. If your read up on the Coinage Act of 1792, which scraped the British coin system as too clunky in favor of the 100 basis system for coins, it makes more sense. And virtually every other hobby uses a 10 point condition scale. We live in a metric world where virtually every package is labeled with both US and metric equivalents, because the US has just been slow to catch up with the rest of the world. I wouldn't be surprise if coins also ended up with some form of dual labeling given how slow the switch to metric has been. Plus for a while the new NGCX scale, which seems more like just a metric scale, will just supplement existing grading. So there is no rush. I never liked the Sheldon 70 point numerical scale, which I think is clunky and illogical, with inexplicable number jumps because it was developed ages ago to simply force-fit numbers to the values of just one coin type minted around 1800, resulting in just arbitrary grade numbers for other coins. I dislike it to the point where I often find I am still thinking in terms of just adjectival grades (https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-grading/grading-scale/adjectival-grades/), including the BU, Choice and Gem designations, with a "+" modifier for a better condition with any given letter designation, and where the TPG's still use most of those adjectival descriptions for grades combined with the arbitrary junk numbers. Granted, it will be a real pain for those who have been using the 70 system forever, and I think there will be growing pains and duplication or cross comparisons. But maybe in the long long it will be a much better system that just flows more naturally. And maybe the switch will be easier than some think on the surface. [e.g. 10 for perfect. 9.0 to 9.9 for MS, 8 for AU, 7 for XF, 6 for VF, etc.] Just my 2 (Indian head) nickels ๐Ÿ˜‰
  6. That is a pretty nice one since it's about as far off center as possible, but which still includes the date and mark to help ID the coin and retain the most value. Attached is another example of a pretty far off center struck cent (~75%) but which still has the date/mark. Not extremely valuable, but they are interesting and some do collect them. If error coins is an interest it's recommended to have a copy of the attached book so if you do find true error coins (see the previously referenced links), the next issue often is what would it be worth (typ not that much).
  7. Interesting ... they must be pretty difficult to assemble sets.
  8. I have some "Stage Coach" labeled Morgans if that counts.
  9. I don't really see it either, but I am really a raw coin collector where if you take the coin out of the holder you typically aren't left with anything special. But there are plenty of collectors that see value in those special label designations ... supply and demand. Look at the bidding wars over the unique first/last struck different types of 2021 ASEs, with resulting premiums in the range of $80k per coin, where it really was all about what was designated on the holder label.
  10. @Coins3I assumed you knew it wasn't the astronomically rare multi-colored unicorn 1982-D small date copper cent from the title where you seemed to be asking about doubling. See the attached to help with the search if that's what you were asking about.
  11. That looks like a large date with the size of the 98 vs the 1 & 2 as well as the shape of the 8 and 2, and from the title it looks like the op may be thinking they found one doubled while looking for the unicorn.
  12. The shadow or ghosted like area below the bust is unusual, and that is how it looks in hand so it's not just the lighting. On the eagle's breast those are very frosty areas, with somewhat of a crystalline look, that often show up as a darker area in pics.
  13. Thats what I thought a first from a quick glance and did a double take, but not that well shaped.
  14. Thanks, it does seem to have a lot of chatter with the coin in-hand which may not present well with the pics. Much cleaner rev, but that's not the money side. And that is a NGC style similar slab I use for raw coins so everything fits together in the collection. I use either slabs or capsules.
  15. Doesn't really look like a broken off piece of the die. Looks a little like it just took a heavy hit by something fairly pointed that caused the surrounding area to raise up
  16. Attached is a raw 1898-O Morgan I have in-hand which I am trying to grade. Looks like a near date with the mark set high variety. I don't see any wear, particularly at hight points like the hair/cap on the obv or the eagles breast/head on the rev so it looks like a mint state coin. There is a good amount of bag marks and chatter, particularly on the face of Liberty, which is a no-go for higher grade Morgans. So, I'm thinking like an MS62 or possibly an MS63 at best. Thoughts?
  17. CC is mostly just click-bait stuff, as is most YT stuff. Look for ANA eLearning vids which are actually usefull and presented by some of the top experts in the field. And of course stick around here and post coins you find or have questions about and you will actually learn acurate and usefull information. If someone posts something inaccurate they will very likely get called on that.
  18. I also like the color of this one with nice progression. ๐Ÿ‘
  19. @JBTrustLooks like a 1879-S Rev 79 with some wear. You should start a new thread with better pics, as those are too blurry. Maybe check the PCGS CoinFacts to get an idea of a close grade with the coin in-hand and post that too. It's prolly not worth submitting unless it's a unicorn very high MS grade.
  20. Maybe make some Xmas tree decorations from them? ๐Ÿ˜œ Not good for much else imo, and all my coins go in slabs or capsules.
  21. It really isn't unusual to find fairly grouped sold prices at GC or HA for some coins. What was unusual is the deviation from what I had been seeing previously having bid quite a number of these coins recently.
  22. I don't really like the term "feeder finger", which gives a visualization of something grabbing the surface of coins when being struck. It really is just a plate with cutouts to move a coin through by the edges, and I think would be more appropriately called a "feeder plate".
  23. That would have been a great addition to my Parking Lot short set. Having difficulty finding higher denominations in lots. Tough times. ๐Ÿ˜œ
