  1. The weight and that’s the baggie I’ve been storing the nickel in at the bottom of the pic so let’s not even go there🤣
  2. Here are the results. This isn’t proving anything other then it’s thicker. I’ve measured at least 10 to 15 other nickels and gotten 1.8 to 1.9 this one 2.2 all the time all the way around.
  3. Oh ok I read that wrong😉 Still wouldn’t mind knowing. The people around here are stingy with their loose change🤣
  4. I sure would like to know what laundry mat you go to that there machines take nickels🤣
  5. Even the three articles I did come across they all say there’s dispute in the coin community about wether or not there’s a 6th coin or wether he did make his dies. I’m only assuming there is dispute amongst other details about this coin. Dead men tell no tells and old man Henning is long gone.
  6. I just read that they recovered I believe 200,000 planchettes from a river and reused them. I don’t recall where I read it but if I find it I’ll post it. Not saying they’re correct just explaining why I said that. Plus he supposedly obtained his metal from the same place that provides or provided it to the mint that could be the wrong information but if it’s correct what impurities?
  7. And that sounds a lot more plausible to me. That’s exactly my thought last night was that someone tried making it into a ring but didn’t finish. They would have to know their metals and have the right tools to do this. Thanks for that answer. I’m still baffled on the growth thing though😂
  8. Not sure what you mean by that I’m not spending any time on providing/disproving anything other then it’s different from the rest of the nickels and it’s neat looking on how it was done. The fact someone or something bent the metal inward without leaving any other damage is baffling and neat as well. I’ve never been to the mints to see the process to develop a plausible explanation to this nor did I claim it happened there. When I say the coin is thicker it’s not arguing that it was made this way at the mint and no where else. I’m just explaining the coin is thicker and leaves me with questions to how it got thicker. People keep worthless sh-t and I’m not immune from doing that either. I’ll keep her and not because I believe it was made that way by the mint.
  9. Ok just a question and maybe I’m not thinking right on this. If it’s thicker and say a machine pushed the top of the edge inward or even outward like that then wouldn’t it lose thickness? Even with that done to this one it’s still noticeably taller then any other nickel I put next to it. I can rub my finger across the both of them a feel the difference.
  10. That was my point of the wording. Was to put a little dirty humor into this place🤣 It wouldn’t of been funny saying nice edge job.
  11. I’ll know more once I measure the thickness. It’s definitely taller then another nickel I put beside it. And to my knowledge metal doesn’t swell and I’m still thinking I’d see a little more damage other then the reverse being tapered inward. Some kind of scratches or unevenness around the edge.
  12. Regardless you knew what I was talking about right?👍
  13. Then it definitely must of been struck deeper on the reverse then the obverse right? Otherwise how would anything after that machine or otherwise been able to fold the metal inward? I can’t see the edges being grounded down either that would mean there would of been a hell of a boarder between the wording and the very edge. I guess it’s one of them things we’ll never know and is what makes these oddities worth holding on to👍
  14. There’s nothing indicating this got stuck in a machine and damaged. I think there would be some wear on the edges or even the devices being worn down. The edge is smooth and the wording takes a little curve up it. The obverse is normal depth I see on all them. The reverse has been struck a little deeper. it’s also thicker then a normal nickel. I’ll measure it tomorrow when I have the tool to do so.
  15. Not sure if the rim can be seen in these pics to others but it’s really high and sharp. Kind of tapers inward. I’ll measure it as soon as I get my sliding caliber tomorrow. I know it doesn’t carry much of a premium. It’s something cool to hang onto none the less.
  16. I’m wondering though if anyone knows more about the Henning story they can tell me about the nickels the feds recovered and reused the blanks from what I’ve read. Are they the same weight his nickels were or do you suppose they melted and repunched new ones from what they recovered?
  17. I have like 5 38’s and 7 39’s. They all fall in around 4.8 to 5.0 except a couple 38’s are over like 5.05 and one 39 weighs 4.78 and this one keeps jumping between 4.75 and 4.76. I weighed them all three times and get the same results. Lighter ones I’m still chalking up as wear and nothing more.
  18. I went through my bag of 38 39’s for further inspection and got this that my scale shows at 4.75-4.76
  19. I’ve had nickels come up lighter then that. They where older ones like yours and I just pass it off as it wasn’t 5 grams when it was made and it lost weight due to wear. I’m interested in finding a Henning which is over 5. I believe 5.4 so anything under 5 serves no interest to me but thanks👍
  20. I pretty much hit the bank every day for my daily coin return. I always look down below in the return slot that spits out coins that are foreign or silver. No one ever checks these. Mostly every time I’ll find Canadian coins. I’ve found 2 silver quarters and a couple silver dimes before. This last time there was a new trick I found out that got me this 1969 Kennedy half dollar. The coin machine at my bank has two screws sticking out on the inside of the return slot. If you stick your finger up inside it then you’ll knock down anything bigger them a quarter these screws seem to stop from coming all the way out.
  21. Lol I’m not sure. I guess I’d like to know I have something in my collection worthy of putting up for auction someday. Right now all I have in my collection anyone can obtain. I’m glad I’m not the only one since you’ve herd this a lot. Not sure of their reasoning but mine is more pride in owner ship of something I can display. My nephew may decide he wants to sell it some day to hopefully but the money to good use. It being graded would make that process easier🤷🏼‍♂️
  22. I do not but then again the pictures aren’t so great. What I think I see to be doubling on the chin could also be a reflection back on to itself or glare from the light.🤷🏼‍♂️ Sorry maybe someone with a better I for this will chime in.
  23. Ok then here’s what may be another stupid question from me. Why isn’t it listed in the Red Book as being a DDR? What gets an error coin in the Red Book when it sells at an auction for an astounding price? Sorry two stupid questions😂
  24. Personally if I was to start buying or selling my own coins I’d start with the Red Book. I know a coins only worth what someone will pay for it but if you’re not sure then go by what’s out there. If someone’s got $6000 they are willing to blow on a coin then I guess they ought to be a little more educated in this field. I wouldn’t feel sympathy for that person but it’s still not ok.
