I'm no specialist but I do believe that is a D over S from this 1954 I found coin roll hunting.

Sorry about that I hit quote by mistake and couldn’t get rid of it. Plus it wouldn’t let me type anything for some reason. Anyway I checked out eBay for error coins and came across someone selling a 2017 D Jefferson nickel with the same doubling as mine but listed as die deterioration doubling. I believe it was at $5. Then I looked in the sold section of eBay and came across this 2018 D with the same doubling on the same devices except I believe it also has doubling on Monticello in a couple letters but I can’t tell from their phones. But none the less machine doubling, die deterioration doubling or any kind of doubling some collectors seem to like lol. Unless this person placed a bid on their own coin to leave positive feedback.

The book is the Cherry Pickers guide to rare die varieties. I believe this is the same author but I’m not sure about that. It explains a lot more about doubling then just mechanical doubling. I only read a few pages about how dies are made. I skimmed through the rest and seen there’s like 8 or 9 classes of doubling. It talks about other forms of doubling that are actual doubled dies at the end. I’ll start reading that next as soon as I have more free time to sit and read. I love reading but I have to have a few hours of nothing else on my mind lol. I’ve come across a lot of deterioration doubling which I know is when the devices are doubled on both sides. I’ve also come across some doubling only on one side and been told it’s mechanical. Its also hard for me to tell if the serifs are split in some which I guess is one of my problems and the flat top look. Besides the 1955 double die Lincoln and a few others that show very obvious doubling Its not that easy I guess lol. I’ve seen other coins being classified as doubled dies that look like ones I’m being told is mechanical. Here’s a few pics and if someone can tell me if the serif in the 1 and lower 2 is split🤷🏼‍♂️ I guess it doesn’t really matter on this one because I’ve already been told mechanical. But I also have a few pennies I can’t tell if anyone can help. The one in the next pic is a 1964 cent. Doubling on one cent, mechanical?

Can machine doubling happen on the same devices on multiple coins. I know there’s multiple processes in making a working die. So where in the process is it classified as machine doubling? Pretty much any where after the hub makes the master die? Not even sure if I got that right. Eventually I’ll sit down and read this book on double dies haha. I’ve seen multiple coins with the same doubling and they say they are machine doubling. When I picture parts moving around really fast stamping out coins I picture doubling all over the place and not just cause doubling on those specific devices on multiple coins.A true double die is created in the process of the hub making the master die right? So anything after that can be considered machine doubling or just the end process of striking the planchette which is also referred as strike doubling? I’m so confused 😂

Ok then what’s the explanation on the 2019 quarter with Washingtons earring? I was just repeating what was told to me by by two different people and that’s the only explanation I could give for the circle around her ear. If that’s not possible then what is the explanation for Washingtons earring? I throw what I’ve been told out there not to come off as a know it all but to be corrected and get the right information. I realize that there’s a lot of errors and varieties out there so much so they made a book for them. So I’m don’t come here expecting everyone to know what they’re talking about either.

I guess let me put it this way and just going off one coin because it’s a Indian head with an explained but kind of unexplained explanation because it’s just speculation. The 1875 dot penny with a dot on the reverse. If I had that penny back then and someone said what you said about trying to explain how during the minting process that happened and why and if not the rest didn’t matter I probably would of spent that penny felling defeated in explaining this😂Thanks. But anyway I can’t explain it that’s why I asked if anyones seen a error like this. Especially the circle as I know it’s happened but did they make their dies the same way they do now.

I thought I did explain in the minting process about the earring on Washingtons ear. Its a little smaller then that circle. But it was perfectly placed on his ear it was almost like it was done on purpose. Apparently it was left behind from making the die they didn’t grind it down. As for the 1 no clue. My thought if it’s a raised 1 and there didn’t appear to be any damage to the reverse then it must of been struck on to the coin. Look I’m still a newbie here and that’s why I ask these questions. I’ve seen a lot of strange errors and I don’t work or never had for the US mint or any other mint. So me asking myself questions is pointless on this one. So just because I can’t explain it to myself the rest doesn’t matter? I don’t get that view but ok lol. Anyway thanks for the input.

The seller wasn’t pushing the coin to be something it’s not. He sold it at a far price for what’s on it. I still purchased regardless of the markings because it was interesting to me and wanted to look at it first hand. It’s not a key date so nothing was lost in this deal either way. As for an ear ring I’m not even sure that’s what that was intended to be and I can’t tell if the number 1 is raised or punched in the coin. I thought maybe there was a possibility of one design getting stamped over another or something. Basically the purchase was for me to get a better look at it and ad it to my set I’m starting since I’ve already completed my wheat set with the exception of one. Thanks for the input…

I got this coin not in hand yet so I can further inspect it but the seller says it seems the 1 in her headdress and what appears to be an earring was minted on the coin and not man made. Has anyone seen anything like this? My first thought about the circle on the ear was I believe the 2019 quarter with the nob on Washingtons ear which I believe they determined to be from the making of the die. I’m just not sure dies where made the same back then and if that circle is centered enough to be that theory.

This is crazy. I guess you can’t blame the sellers if someone going to fork out a few hundred for a penny. Although they’re misleading in some ways they can always play dumb. Even a 1982 D small date zinc and the seller showing it ways 2.6 someone still shelled out $150 for. I think I found my new calling🤣jk

Preserving it for my nephew and niece, which ever takes more interest or need the funds more in the future has always been my strategy from the get go. Even the I find gets tucked away. I’ve almost completed a set of wheat pennies. Even though I spent a few hundred doing it I wasn’t expecting to turn around and sell them to try and up my funds. It will be worth a lot more down the road to them.

I believe they’re both lol. Especially the ones selling rolls. Every one of them claim they are unsearched rolls yet they are capped with Indian heads. I even seen someone selling rolls of wheat pennies. Claims they are unsearched straight from the bank. It’s stamped “Bank of America”. The problem with that is is Bank of America has only been around for 25 years. You have to ask how a bank that’s only been around since the 90’s has gotten ahold of nothing but wheat pennies to roll up? If it said “Wells Fargo” a bank that’s been around for 175 years. Then maybe there’s a slight chance they’ve had it tucked away in a vault somewhere and someone got a hold of the 20 or 30 years ago and held on to them. I think if they were honest sellers they’d know enough to stay away from selling coin rolls. Or at least stop claiming they’ve been unsearched and or from an estate. Wether it’s by them or someone else they’ve been searched.

Or grab some circulated coins that aren’t worth much and clean them. Do a abrasive clean and a dip in vinegar with a penny. That way you’ll be able to see the difference on how they look in appearance.

If any of them were real I’m sure it would be news by now that a third or even multiples have been found and up for auction on eBay of wherever. I search all mine and I’ll even Google it every once in while in case I missed the news and nope it’s still been 2 for the past two of three years now.

Yeah Etsy is a sketchy website to be buying coins. The sad part is is most the sellers on there really believe their common error coins are worth thousands. I stopped even going to that website and I only went to it just to laugh at some of them😂

I guess I have more learning to do about the wheaties or at least remember there’s multiple dies used in this one. For some reason I was under the belief the 22 was just dirty with grease and slowly built up in the die to make a weak D to no D. Looking at this again I can see what’s been said about the TRUST being more defined and the TY in LIBERTY. I still think their asking price is way high for this $1350. And I still get weary about buying coins from someone online. Who’s to say they just didn’t take a pic of the reverse from another coin? After seeing all the so called 1982 D small date coppers up for sale I’m very cautious on purchasing coins lol.

I checked out eBay for a 1982 D small date copper just for kicks and hoping maybe 1 of the only 2 known to man would be up for sale lol. I’ve come across quite a few sellers who either don’t know what they’re talking about or trying to scam someone. Obviously it’s up to the buyer to know what they are buying. It’s just crazy some of these sellers would even waste their time pulling such a thing. The ones I think are fooled themselves are the one’s asking for a grand or more. Then there’s the one’s asking $50🙄 Like both are very cheap for a penny as rare as this lol.

Really? I have a 22 weak D and the 2 is about as weak as the D and I’ve checked out graded none D strong reverses and they to have a weak last 2. I know the none D was made from poor dies so I can’t understand how just that one on the edge is more stronger then the rest of the devices. It’s just weird even if it’s a 100% real.
