    Hello all, I was roll hunting today and found this cull piece. Through the years I have seen quit a few of these1959 dark nickels also termed as Black Beauty's. Most are not and just environmental damage. This one is a maybe? Just for fun, I thought I would post some shots and get some others opinions to see if it looks like one.

    So we can request special names for coins through NGC ? This coin is a Masterpiece. Wow. Thanks Roger for finding that because we are always saying you can't make up your own fancy names for a coin.     Mike, If the coins you have are in NGC or PCGS holders I would think they are ok. Most large auction houses have there own coin experts to cover there butts. Now if you are picking up raw coins at estate auctions then that is a different story. You would have to be able do your own assessment's of the coins .

    Still my favorite year for a Kennedy, Because it meant something. It was not just a coin it was a tribute. A end of a era.

    Nice cent but we can not say anything without better pictures. As Sandon said. I will suggest putting your phone on top of a soda can with the coin in view. then zooming to fill the screen with the coin to the edges. I have a old S8 Samsung and it will take good shots with this method . Like this

    Without holding it in my hand it looks like PMD .The edge from the number one all the way around to the mint mark looks to be dished out including the remainder of the date with displaced metal pushed toward the bust and to the edge of the rim. It may have been a grease or week strike to start with but it has gone round and round on coin roller or something somewhere for a while. It has been around long enough to smooth out so no one will ever know for sure. That's my 25 cents worth

    It looks like I would just keep all that information with the coin. It is a real 210 year old coin with a certification number saying it is to damaged to put in a Certified Holder unless you want to pay more money.     Another trip to the bank today and asked if they had any strange coins they wanted to part with? One girl said I have 19 of them if you want. I said sure. LoL I got one silver out of the batch. At melt It is almost worth what I paid for the whole of them.

    Well, collecting nickels it is almost a normal expectation to find polished dies. Some are quite nice. Finger prints not so nice and never either of the two on proofs.

    It could be a hardened piece of grease . A strike through can be a one time thing a lot of times it is gone after the first hit .

    I agree it was mounted in a bezel and then coated with a sealer of some kind.

    QA I for one think you should not be even asking about this stuff. We try to discourage the new people from doing any more damage than is all ready being pushed around the internet.

    Thank you for the heads up Sandon. I will have to see if I have any of the type 1 coins. Not that I would break the set but good value factor to know about. Maybe slip a note in the envelope for the kids so they will know.

    This came in today and I was hoping it would be a gold colored UC .I think it is cool looking. I have seen this color on some mint sets I have bought in the past.
