I know, RIGHT!!!! I simply do not understand why people do that other than not having a clue that certain dates were silver. I would think that common sense would factor in and tell one that even melt value of silver coinage is more than face value (and not to mention varieties which I cannot hold that against a non-collector of course). Oh well..... I don't take advantage of anyone, but at the same time, some folks lack of knowledge benefits those of us that are knowledgable on coins. P.S.- I was just trying to throw in some humor with my roll of penny comment. I do own a few very nice coins (none in the $thousands though). One of them came from our beloved @Coinbuf and also @Woods020 right here on the forum. Thanks guys for your generosity in allowing me to purchase these from of you!!

@Simple Collector I don't have a budget like the rest of you guys do, major kudos for your extremely nice acquisitions, I'm sure those are some stunning coins!! For me, the most I've ever spent is .50 cents. Yes, that's correct (albeit not a single coin though, sorry). That was on an extremely nice bank wrapped roll of pennies, but I keep having to return them due to needing the funds.

@Davebays Nice RPM there Dave. I too believe that's the D/Horizontal D, just a very late die state. But, if ya know me or ever seen any of my Nickel "RPM" posts....., you'd probably be better off not asking for my opinion brother..... @DWLange I'm sure would second that!! @Lem E @Coinbuf @Just Bob @J P M Not to change the subject here nor rob this member's thread, but along the same lines I have a question that you may be able to answer. Do you fellas or anyone else know if it is possible to restore a loupe lens? I only use Belomo brand triplet style loupes, predominately their 10x. I have had great luck with them over the years and they are very durable with zero distortion (and not too expensive). Over time, after repeatedly wiping/cleaning the domed lens with an appropriate very soft lens rag, the lens coating becomes ever so slightly scratched and hazy. This leads to a bit of blurriness when viewing coins. I would have started a new thread, but figured I ask here since this is sort of still on topic. Thanks!

Good advice to anyone collecting errors and varieties. I got over that awhile ago. If not, I wouldn't be involved in this hobby today.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, no doubt a late stage die, no disagreement there. Playing devil's advocate here Chris..... Being that this is a later stage die, it would not make sense, in my humble opinion, for this other leg to have the excellent definition it does, especially the perfect top serif that RJO pointed out in his previous comment. Now, if that top serif was flat and shelved or spread out thin, then yes, I would 100% concur that this would be a bonafide result of die deterioration. In my limited experience, I have not seen a form of die deterioration CREATE more definition such as this, but more so redact from the relief and definition of a design elements/devices on a coin. I may be completely off base in my diagnosis here, but these are my thoughts. Thanks!

You basically hit the nail on the head RJ and explained my thoughts verbatim. One thing though, despite what the pics may show, there is not any shelf at all in regards to the secondary leg. If you notice the shadows on both legs in the pic above, you will see the location of the shadows to be in the same area on each respective leg. A flat and shelflike secondary leg would not produce the same looking shadow as it does. I'm pretty confident in saying that. The additional leg has definition to it just like the whole leg on the "full" D mint mark. And yes, the top serif is extremely well defined as you pointed out. Hello JP. Correct sir, there is not a listing for this one if it actually does happen to be an RPM. If so, it would be a new discovery. That is predominately why I chose to post it here for my friends to see and give me some much appreciated feedback. I like the suggestions of posting it on Coneca which I may as well do and give it a shot. I've been gunned down before, so hey...... no big deal if it happens again.

Hey Chris. Here are another couple of pics. Best I can do with a phone and a loupe and working with lighting. Maybe you can see what is inside the loop and what slightly appears as a faint line of separation on the loop. Not sure, but thanks!!!

I’m AOW certified to 100 ft. deep so yes, decompression sickness, AKA the bends, is definitely a potential hazard if normal ascent procedures are not followed! Been that deep a few times and a bit deeper and I absolutely love it!! I’d rather die while doing something I love as opposed to kicking the bucket over racking my head on a potential new discovery RPM that simply ain’t ever going to make me a dime! I already have a pitiful Jeffy Nickel DDR first discovery attributed to me and I haven’t seen a penny from it as a result, haha. Today will go, and tomorrow will come, with hopefully better things. 👍 RPM’s are totally overrated anyways😂

Yes sir. The mint mark for all coins prior to 1990 were hand punched. Obviously, some were on the obverse and some the reverse, year and denomination dependent.

Thanks Ronnie. Evidently this was caused by some type of anvil die chatter. I have no other plausible explanation being that this mint mark is obviously on the reverse die. No other devices on the reverse are affected in the least. Just too much of a defined and clean looking secondary leg on the D, no cut or shelflike appearance at all, and thickness of the loop on the D is wider than what I would consider normal for this year mint mark. I give up pal..... Still batting 0%... Going to pursue metal detecting and scuba diving......... Later...

Came across this one in a roll yesterday. Without going into any detail, in the attempt NOT to sway judgement (which I know I cannot do for the experts here😁) , I'm just going to throw up some pics to get your valued opinions and feedback. You completely forgot about cell phones and Google maps. How in the world did we actually survive.....? I remember the first "bag phone" I had that you had to plug into your car's 12v cigarette lighter. Every car had a cigarette lighter in those days; where did they all go...... Back then, we had to learn how to navigate via a map book. Being in L.E. back in the 90's, to get anywhere you HAD to learn how to read a map and you better sure as heck know were ya where if the SHTF buddy!!! Lawd help us all if the grid ever goes down...very sad. However, we did have top of the line Motorola pagers back then! That was cutting edge technology at it's finest, baby!

Welcome to the forum AA. While this is an older post, I can appreciate your comment. Rest assured that the "scratches" on the face and the star are just that, scratches, they are not errors. You have many extremely knowledgeable experts here on this forum and they will tell it like it is as they already have. If you have found similar coins, with the same marks and scratches, then it is either a form of die damage or PSD, which neither carry a premium. The high relief points on a coin, as mentioned already, are very susceptible to damage after they were struck.

Hello Just Bob. You are not the only one that has happened to my friend. I have had that happen more times than I can remember. Sometimes if I go off the post, and then come back, the "editor" program will have saved it when I click on the reply button again, but not always. Other than that, I have started copying longer comments prior to hitting the submit button so I don't lose what I've typed. Definitely a glitch in the system though.

I really like this two statements of yours Coinbuf. This is so true and often swept to the side these days with collecting. IMHO, this is what coin collecting, as a hobby, is all about.👍
