I initially thought it appeared to be damage from the reeded edge of another coin, but NOPE! I felt like being artistic today so here's my best drawing of the culprit as ya'll mentioned. 👍

Yup, I concur Coinbuf. I actually took some time and sent one of our forum member's pictures, being a similar type of issue on the reverse of their coin, to a well known numismatic individual. It was of their professional opinion, in their reply to me, that the marks were simply a result of: "semicircular die dents or die gouges of unknown origin."

Great info powermad! The variety you mention is FS-102. I just wanted to mention that this year Cent (also from the Philadelphia Mint) had another "major" doubled die obverse recognized by TPG's known as FS-101. FS-101 was the doubled ear variety. The DDO you mentioned is by far the better of the two recognized varieties and carries a significantly higher premium (2 to 3 times as much) in MS condition. Just my two humble cents worth here. 👍 Also....There are numerous minor doubled die reverses for this year which are not TPG recognized. These DDR's all deal with fairly small variations of minor doubling on or around "little Lincoln" within the columns of the Memorial. They are very minor and sometimes hard to detect, but they are out there and much more plentiful than the two major DDO varieties. Coppercoins.com has a great number of listings for the reverse doubled dies as well as quite a few other minor DDO's. I agree. Any tiny bumps, lumps, lines, or bubbles you are seeing on the reverse (or obverse as well) are a result of blistering to the microscopically thin copper plating on these horrid zinc cored Cents. Every Cent since "mid" 1982, when the mint transitioned to zinc cored Cents, has suffered from a host of things which is too in-depth to cover in a comment. Not an error or variety on this one. I think you got more decent answers here than most newcomers do. You were given the 100% absolute truth about the question you asked, and, in very good detail! If you are going to stay in this hobby, and participate on major coin forum chat boards, I would highly suggest you get a bit more thick skinned and lose your attitude, respectfully. @powermad5000, @EagleRJO, @GoldFinger1969, @Coinbuf, @J P M, and finally @Sandon, who, by the way, are all long time collectors and experts in their respective fields, took their time to give you their honest opinion and the hard truth. Can you write a tutorial (and pin it) on how to take pictures like that by only holding your phone with your hands???? Good grief man...... you have some steady nerves. That's a good pic!!!👍 Edit: I never should have switched to an iPhone........ I loved my Samsung....

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the endless journey of collecting. Differentiating between real mint errors/varieties, and coins that have just had a rough life such as yours, can be confusing and frustrating at times. If you are sincerely interested in learning about coin collecting, I respectfully suggest that you become a "sponge" and soak up as much information you can. You can do this not only here, but you should also put in the time for research and self study that is vastly abundant on both the net and in print. Just a few mentions below regarding your comment. Copper does not rust, it corrodes. There has never been a Cent made by the U.S. Mint (to my knowledge) that was not a solid alloy (prior to 1982 when the mint transitioned to zinc cores and copper plating in '82). Coins that are missing clad layers are just what you called them, clad coins. Please come here all you want and ask good, valid, and reasonable questions. That is what this group of expert numismatists are here for; we want to help educate those new to the hobby and see you succeed. Speaking from experience, I can definitely say that this forum and group of knowledgeable members have really helped me out over the years. One thing though.... if you are going to ask a question about your coin(s), as said previously although I will mention it again, you MUST supply good, clear, and cropped photos of the obverse and reverse of your coin. As of now, after having been asked to supply these type of pictures (particularly your 1948 LWC in question), all we have seen here is one unclear photo of the obverse of your 1948. Very well explained Greenstang. I believe you hit the nail on the head in my humble opinion. I can attest that I have found more 1998 and 2000 WAM's that I've lost count. However, still looking for the 1999 WAM and of course, the holy grail '92 CAM. My luck would probably be to find one ('92 CAM) in a parking lot that has been run over a gazillion times. I'd still take it though!😁

I could only imagine the feeling of unearthing something like that!! Heck, I was happier than a pig in slop when I tore out a bathroom wall and found my best carpenter hammer inside the wall! I guess it was a late night project, with too many adult beverages, when I built the original wall.....
