  1. I've been getting decimated at auctions and I've been overbidding a little, I think. I've bid on 25 items in June and won 3, two of my wins were for what I was expecting the other I overpaid. I have not opened up my Whitman yet, probably never will unless forced to, but I have been selling off some of my NCLT/bullion and accumulating a bankroll. I'm just waiting for the right coin or note to become available, although I have been drooling over this 1813 proof IoM 1/2 penny for a week and a half now. ;) The market is being driven by all the factors you mention and then some, "people are crazy" especially that one. For me the areas I collect are little obscure, especially in the U.S., and I feel the market is being driven by a hand full of individuals, particularly for TPG highly graded notes. The low end stuff remains cheap and the ungraded items have for the most part remained steady. I guess it only takes one other adamant "crazy" collector, such as myself, to potentially throw ones collecting world into chaos. :insane:

I may yet post a review of my own griping about this coin though. I do not care who you are, this is not “mint.”

The corrosion looks mint green, maybe that's what they meant.   All kidding aside, I hate when that happens but that's a chance we take when buying online, sight unseen. There is really no where else to get coins like these, I imagine, and I'm with you on it's not worth it to try and get a refund or to return these. Meh, lesson learned on this seller.

I could have also waited to send them in until after we move, but I do not want a repeat of what I did last year with letting the grading credits expire and I’d like to have these back before early December, which could be in doubt if I waited until late August to submit, unless the turnaround times come down in the interim, which I’m not comfortable banking on.

Well that's the kick in the rear I needed, I'll be sending my submission in next week.

Can't wait to see those 10Gs lined up, all pretty in there matching holders.

Fenntucky Mike and like 5 other people on the PMG side have gotten to witness a lot of manic babbling about near-worthless hyperinflation novelties

    hm Yep, but very entertaining.

On the Tobacco Dove I got a 69. The hope here when submitting was, obviously, a 70 - while expecting a 69. After the residue report I was afraid of a 67 or 68 coming back, which would have killed its value and turned sending it in into a bit of a disaster (albeit good to have removed the residue before anything worse happened). The 69 after cleaning is a good save / recovery. It was worth it to let them clean off the residue.

Did they say it was ungradable or did they assign a grade to the coin before conservation. On some of mine they've assigned a grade prior to conservation and it's interesting to see what the difference is.

Lots of good news today, congratulations on the house and everything else.(thumbsu Life is good!

Anyway... What usually got me as a babe was age and size, first size and then age. I loved looking at a few old silver dollars as a kid. Which may be why silver dollars and 1 oz silver NCLT was such a grab for me early on. I'll probably never have a major collection of Morgans and Peace Dollars - especially by registry standards - but I will always keep some. But I'm also learning as I go along that I'm more of a type collector than someone that focuses on a series.

I don't know that value was something that explicitly factored into my thinking but I loved the idea or REAL silver.

Totally agree on the size of a coin being an attraction at a young age. I guess for me when I didn't have a concept of what money was the size was cooler, once I knew I could spend it, value trumped all until I grew out of adolescence. No matter the order, I would put those as the top three. For me. PM's will always hold an attraction for me mainly because in my pre teen years (late 80's) you could still find pre 65 coins in change with some frequency, that was always a big thrill for me. My family has always been a big PM family anyway, one Christmas I bought a 5lb copper ingot for a swap gift and that thing changed hands at least 6 times and rightful ownership was fought over everyday for many weeks (still is). Each year my dad brings it out and struts around, much to several individuals chagrin. :frustrated:

  5. Friends and family are often surprised when I tell them what a coin might be worth, especially the kids. When someone pulls out a 2020-W quarter and I say "it's worth a couple bucks in that condition" they get all excited. Then they start looking for errors, posting here, are told what they have and keep posting "DDOs" that are not... It's a vicious cycle. In all seriousness, value can be one of the major factors in drawing in a young collector at first. Love of artwork, craftmanship and history are a hard sell sometimes. Tell them that they can find coins worth a couple bucks in the change jar and they are all over it. Middle age fortune hunters are a completely different story.

A coins age is probably #2 on the WOW factor list (after price) in my experience. Anything made in the 20th Century seems to amaze most yn. :preach:

  6. Lol, I did the exact same thing about a month ago, changed/added labels, in my PMG journal. Mainly because my titles are such a mess and in no significant way reflect the content of the entry. It was only a matter of time before I completely forget what was in some of them and it probably makes it easier for an individual browsing journal entries, I guess. Mainly it was for my own sanity.

Another feature I've become aware of over time - it seems that after 1 year you can no longer go back and edit entries, just hide them. This one us a bit bittersweet as I has typos!!! So many typos. When I see them I will often try to fix them. Now, past the one year threshold, I see that is quite impossible. Sadness...

Well that stinks, I better go delete that one about the hair while I still can. Jk :roflmao:

I am a little curious as to why you say that. Is it appreciation for the set that its linked to, do you like PMG / notes collecting more these days?

Interestingly, I think the PMG plaque (PMG plaques in general and the PMG Best Presented more so) are rarer / fewer in absolute number than most NGC awards just because PMG gives so many fewer, but I think there are more of them per registered user on the PMG side because the PMG user base is so much smaller.

Both. The Zimbabwe signature set is amazing, I have a lot of respect for that set and I tend to hold signature/custom sets in higher regard due to the added thought and work in constructing them. I have been and still am focusing more on notes these days, so I probably am showing a little favoritism at the moment. I've shifted away from coins as my prime focus for the moment due to the increase in spot, along with a lot of people joining in on modern NCLT series that I collect which ramped up prices considerably, which is both good and bad. I'll be shifting back to the coin side of my collection shortly as I have aspirations of constructing some IoM sets yet this year and I need to use up the ol' credits as well. PMG plaques number fewer in total but plaque per capita hadn't really entered into my mind until now. lol

Thanks and congrats to you. It'll be great to see your Ukrainian note set recognized with a "Best Presented" or similar honor - and I see that as being inevitable unless they just stop giving them out in the next couple of years. You're on track to build that into one of the great sets on the PMG side.

Thanks! That's the goal, Best Presented, but I still have a lot of work to do and I doubt I'll get it to the level I want by the end of the year. We'll see.

  8. I've never found the shipment from my mailbox to NGC to cause much angst. Waiting for the the coins to be received, then the descriptions added to the online submission tracking, scheduled for grading, shipped with grades now viewable and finally their arrival to you. During those steps is when my mind is racing with possibilities/scenarios, all worst case. The wait is never easy. Would love to see the Bahama's gold and CW tokens when they are done.

  9. I have never submitted directly to NCS but on the NGC forms you can print out anther submission form, cross out the form number and write Page Two on it and continue with your list. For the description I've just continued it onto the line below (hand written and don't have another coin on that line). I wouldn't do two separate forms as you'll probably get charged the handling fee for each of them. I'd post this in the Ask NGC section to verify.

  10. That was a great lot and the provenance amazing!

Everything seems to be up 2x - 3x across the board for me as well. Currently selling off items of little interest, I would classify it as low end material (modern NCLT under $500 a piece). Have only purchased 1 coin this year, waiting/saving now until the right coin/note comes around and/or prices drop in my areas. Rising spot, bullion craze, elections, people at home "shopping", rejuvenation of hobbies, moving money/investing in general the pandemic seems to be the main factor, I'm anticipating a decrease (at least hoping) in the coming year/s.

  11. Welcome to the dark side my friend.

I'm a Flip guy myself and they do have some drawbacks as you've stated but so do 2x2's. I prefer the 2.5 x 2.5 Flips, then storing them in 8.5L x 2.75W x 3T storage boxes. Biggest plus to me (besides protecting the coin) is the insert, I like to write as much down as possible and an insert allows me to have a more thorough/comprehensive description.

That an FR not a FDOI or FDOR

I don't collect labels or special designations but I took a look and NGC did issue some FDOR labels. As far as what the difference is in terms of the coin, NOTHING.

All 75,000 were sold within 2hrs of release/issue on the same day. My guess is that since all the coins were sold out on the day of release they qualify for either FDOI or FDOR, either one. In this case I would consider the terms interchangeable.

If you have further questions I suggest you post in the Ask NGC section of the Forum.

    Good Luck.

Never dealt with that seller before. I like seeing a picture of the actual item I'm buying. If it's me I'm looking to buy somewhere else, you can get them cheaper than that. The only thing I look for in a label is that it is authentic and accurate PF70 First Release, PF70 First Day of Release I really don't care about that. Looks like $650 will get you the same coin in a standard holder.
