  1. garden of the gods......great place to contemplate
  2. correctamundo..... the $3 was widely faked in the mediterranean n middle east areas for years before the chinese got involved...it was unfamiliar to us tourists n they werent knowledgeable enuf to recognize the fakes n thought they were getting a steal....
  3. the coin doesnt need to be reholdered to receive a cac bean.....
  4. observation.....from what i see, the cac bean is presently adding a % to resale value for almost all series...having said that, the % increase isnt the same for all series....in some of the more common series, 20th cent, the increase seems like 15 % in some, 19th cent, it has recently risen to 30-40%...overall to answer op quest it seems fair to say the cac bean equates to the added value a + would add to the coin....i dont see the cac bean becoming common place in any given series as in theory it represents the top 10 % or so of all coins in that date n grade in that series only, its not a cumulative evaluation...
  5. i do believe its a '43/2 variety as well.....
  6. oh yea forgot...thanks for the back spacing, my elbow slipped.......on a more serious note, i dont know what u consider a hoard number wise, but i have often seen in those deposit box sales rolls of foreign gold coins usually sovereign size coins, swiss 20 francs, french 20 francs, austrian 20 coronas, german 20 marks, danish 20 kronor etc.....apparently the gold coin size of choice, suspect mostly saved during fdr's idiotic edicts....whether these mini-hoards can or will affect numismatic values apparently remains to be seen, but just one thought to keep u awake at nite, if im seeing these many at the abandoned box sales wonder how many remain in the unabandoned boxes???...
  7. those plus a couple others......(1) anonymity, i have some rare pedigreed unslabbed condition census coins that i want to keep that way, slabbing creates an audit trail as does registry sets, these coins r off the market n will probably stay that way for a few decades at least n i prefer to keep it that way...their rarity will not diminish n their infrequent appearance availability wont decrease their value...im not adverse to slabbing or registry sets, i have 30+ sets now, but those coins i dont really care if anyone knows where they r, but some of my others i do...holding coins in my hands that eliasberg, norweb, garret, menjou, brand, bareford et al held in theirs is satisfaction enuf, i have no need to publicize that...for example if my collection happens to holds a '07 uhr or a '27-d saint its no one else's concern, just the fact that they exist is all that matters, their whereabouts isnt relevant...(2) fear, there r those that possess certain coins that r reluctant to have them certified...they either know that their coins wont certify n grade at the grade they want them to be or r afraid to find out...im aware of some highly pedigreed n exceptional coins that r not certified n their owners know that the coins will almost certainly be classified as details if submitted or fear so, so its better to just minimize tpg than take the chance...and of course the reasons u previously gave, confidence in the mails n the loneliness of being without ur favorite rooster while hes gone.....
  8. there r other reasons that people dont want their coins submitted to tpg's......
  9. just to address the last portion of ur query....yes i personally have n routinely still purchase several gold coins at melt or slightly above n occasionally below....u just need to know where...one good example is state auctioned abandoned safety deposit boxes, especially if only advertised locally n not on one of the national online auction platforms...e.g. last november there was a local abandoned deposit box auction....besides all the watches earrings pearls etc there were several gold coins both us n foreign, of interest to u there was almost a complete run of fr 20 fr roosters from '02-'09 with multiples approx 30 coins, all mint state all raw sold individually, average price $340....there were three $20 saints n a few liberties most sold tween $1900-2000...i personally purchased the 19th cent russian roubles, german marks, french 20 fr, n belgium 20 fr....which i viewed as having more numismatic values than any of the 20th cent gold...virtually all of the coins were mint state....after purchase prices n buyers fees i ended up with approx 8% cost over melt....no clue where the op bought his coin but gold coins at or near melt r out there....
  10. nope, same clique same agenda same small circle....running headlong towards irrelevancy, numismatist doing same thing...minimal collector value...very limited reasons for new collectors to join other than just belonging or getting free ngc membership...few decent classes for yn members...
  11. if u r talking peace dollars in general, they r all available, i dont collect peace dollars nor morgans (most over rated series out there), i just thought it interesting to assemble a set in ogh n all cac....available in ogh but finding cac eligible coins much more diff, u can assemble complete peace dollar set in one day if u want to, but not in ogh cac....many of the "key" date peace in ogh have been broken out n resubmitted to get one grade jumps so scarcer n usually overpriced by 30-40%...in my opinions none of the "keys" r really rare....i just started the ogh cac set because bored more than anything else, im not a big fan of any US 20th century series including saints, dont really find them interesting or challenging, mostly consider them bullion coins as far as collecting goes....
  12. remember to cac its how that date coin in that grade compares to other coins same date in that same grade...not how it compares to all other coins in same series.....peace dollars historically have lots of issues, in my opinion much more diff to cac, especially gold beans....i have worked on a peace dollar cac set in ogh (first gen) for many years, getting there but only one gold.....
  13. 83-cc....green 85-cc....no, lots of chatter 78-cc....no, again excessive chatter 91-cc....iffy, but prob green
  14. gold...few n far between, i see couple greenies.....as for peace dollars, gold almost impossible from personal experiences....
  15. politics as usual...hidden agendas....hence close associations tween present n past board members...more closely aligned with the money side of numismatics than the collectors side....not receptive to outliers....
  16. sunshine mining company......at one time one of north americas largest producers of silver ore, bullion, rounds, bars etc...also produced custom order medallions in larger sizes for various commercial endeavors...filed for bankruptcy in mid 90s....some their series very artistic, limited collector value mostly geographically localized but usually at melt value or slightly above.....mine n company located in idaho.....
  17. national parks foundation....medallic arts company (maco)....one of a series of medallions on national parks done by frank gasparro, bronze some silver washed, marked on the edge etc......
  18. ur beliefs r well grounded....as far as i recall when i last did any research on this topic....there were only (9) morgan dollars graded ms69 n (0) graded ms70 as for the peace dollars (0) in both grades....not aware of any recently reaching either grade....
  19. currently if r status tracking says ur package is still in transit then it is still in usps hands, when it arrives at ngc zip code ur usps status update will say arrived at that zip code n then if u request in ur tracking request it will show when available for pick up, thats when it transfers from usps to ngc, then it could take days to be opened n listed on ur submission status tracking at ngc....once u see available for pick up u can basically relax n when u see received on ngc staus u know its in the system....for example i talked to ngc today n they were just opening mail they received on 7 april today.....
  20. yep he did set of patterns on dime quarter half, there a set in the smithsonian collection...
