  1. Picked this one up from jackson64 in the Money Marketplace here. It has a lot of "wow" factor in hand, and a very solid strike!

LOVE IT!!! That is EXACTLY what I will be looking for, once I FINALLY start buying some later dates, in the short set!! Do you mind, if I ask how much you picked it up for? Just curious.......I enjoy following price trends. :) Thx.

Jackson had several really nice Walkers listed. This one was $170 shipped.

  2. I have to agree, I love those 1839 Coppers as well.

I have always wanted to inspect a high graded set

including the 39/6 and the 39 Petite Head. I'd be thrilled

to look at them some day - maybe have them on display

at your favorite dealer's table at some FUN show perhaps ? :)

I don't think I showed this one off - I bought it as an impulse purchase

as I normally only collect MS SLQ's... but I once had a few nice sets of

of AU 58's in my time.

Love the die clash at her knee !!

Mike, I hate playing the "police", but when you post images that big it makes the thread almost un-readable. :( Beautiful coin, but I could do without the extra 9" width of the plastic. (shrug)

  3. Purchased this Italian coin from a dealer in the UK. The thing is so darned lustrous, it's hard to photograph!!! I really like the design, which commemorates the 2000th Anniversary of the Death of Virgil. San Marino also issued a coin (a 1000 Lire) in 1981 commemorating this, and it also has a horse on it The coin is basically as struck, with just a small dark spot near the horse's rear hoof on the reverse.

The information that came with the packaging of the coin states the following about the reverse design:

al centro un albero, simbolo della fertilità; ai lati le figure affrontate di un bue che rappresenta il lavoro nel campi e di un cavallo, simbolo della poesia epica; sulla sinistra del piano “19 A.C.”; sulla destra “1981”; nell’esergo “L. 500”; al di sotto “R”.

    And, my translation:

A tree at center, a symbol of fertility. To the sides are represented two figures; An ox that represents working in the fields, and a horse, the symbol of epic poetry. To the left in the field is "19 B.C.", to the right "1981", and in exergue "L. 500" and "R" beneath.

  4. That's a gorgeous medal and I love the pictures.

Thanks coindude. It's super high relief, so I had to do a 2 image focus-stack of the obverse and of the reverse so that I could keep all of the design in focus.

I'm still researching it online now. I'm pretty sure it's a Frank Hagel design (thus the "FH" you can see on the obverse at about 4-o'clock). He's an historical artist from Montana (b. 1933) who designed around 50 or so medals in the 1970s for Medallic Art Co. and is also well known for his paintings.

  5. Just received this medal today. I can't find too much information on it, and it seems neither could NGC when they graded it. It does not bear a date, but I believe this silver version of the medal was struck at the same time (in 1976) as the copper version indexed on the American Numismatic Society website. Nonetheless, I liked the design.

The edge inscription is "Medallic Art Co. NY 0.999+ Pure Silver"
