I finally added a Barber Half to my type set, thanks to jom. Before he even had a chance to advertise this one, I saw it on my weekly browse through various coin websites. It arrived today, and I shot some pics of it. This one was 2 years in the finding, and I'm very happy with the end result -- patience is not my strong suit, but this time it was really worth it.

This is not a US coin, but it likely inspired the Walking Liberty Half design. It was designed by Louis-Oscar Roty (known typically as simply Oscar Roty) and is referred to as the "Sower".
I have been reading the fantastic book by Roger Burdette (RWB here on the boards) titled "Renaissance of American Coinage: 1916-1921" and on page 36 this coin is mentioned. Incidentally, upon further reading on Mr. Roty, I found that I share the same birthdate (June 11) with him -- which made it all the more cool!
I have wanted an example of this design for a few years, but I was patient because I knew they came with great color. This one finally fit the bill.
I'm also adding a couple close-up images to show off some of the beautiful banded peripheral toning, and the name of the designer.

Roman, great new piece of 8! Love it! Those things are so beautiful ... I have to stop myself from wanting a 3rd one!

Lee, that 1919 is a sexy coin! (thumbs u
Did you already reveal the grade? Or are you keeping that a secret?
65RD? 66?

Both are nice but I like the top one better. Better strike too.
As much as Susie needs make-up, Ike needs a complete overhaul.
jom
I think the top one (1999-P) would make Full Talon status. I'm not sure why, but it seems many many of the 1999-D Susies are weakly struck.

As I stated with the last two toned SBAs I posted, old Susie needs some "make up" to make the design a bit more stomach-able. These two are on their way to me now, should be here on Tuesday. The toning will likely be more subtle in hand as is the case with most TrueView images -- but, I still liked them (especially the 1999-P).

whats the company and grade on the 8 reales?
It was graded AU58 by NGC; however, it was cracked out and submitted to PCGS by the previous owner, and it is now in an AU50 PCGS Secure Plus holder. I really don't care what the holder says, and the coin is just amazing in hand.

Great transaction with TwoKopeiki! Thanks!

Physicsfan: yes they did. But the quarter seemed to be more excessively dipped than the others. The others are decent and market acceptable. All of the coins Jom just posted experienced the same treatment (with the possible exception of the half dime).
Ouch!
Interesting takes. From the Bust coinage I've seen over the past years most if not all of the nicely toned halves are pretty much all similar...at least the ones that are circulated. Many have hairlining to an extent as well.
As to the Barber half if it was dipped then it was a rather weak dip as it still has a ton of luster left...especially for an AU50.
The quarter may or may not be "acceptable" by PCGS or NGC as it's in an old ANACS holder. They graded it XF40 but I think it's more like VF35.
Thanks!
jom
I thought for sure that Ankur didn't like it because it didn't come with a side of green-beans.

Love the newps guys, but what happened to the etiquette of not posting images wider than around 1000-1200 pixels? Those images are ridiculous sizes!
Sorry, I never heard of this before. In the past all my images were so tiny no one
could appreciate what they were viewing.
I'm sorry if my images are too large. I just won't post anything but the smaller versions
from now on. I do most of my viewing on the Forums via my iPad and all the images seem
ok.
Thanks for the Kudos on the new Merc's.
No worries Mike, I just had to hit Ctrl+"-" a few times.

Sorry...I'll cut it down...
jom
Not a biggie...your pics were fine. Those slab pics were massive! I love looking at coins up close, but 90% of the real-estate was the plastic.
No worries. By the way, Mike and Jom, those Mercs are sexy! (thumbs u

Hey, I have a candidate for a coin I regret selling.....
We're young, we can trade it back and forth every 5 years or so.

Jason you are correct. My posted pictures were fast and dirty attempts. The one's below are the one's I uploaded to my type set. Better?

Whenever I find something somewhat "obscure" with a horse on it and in an NGC slab I usually bid on it. I have a couple similar medals to this one. There are a lot of medals ou there which commemorate centennial, bicentennial, or in this case a tercentenary of a particular town.
If my memory serves me correct, NGC doesn't really grade these kind of pieces anymore (as many are not included in official medal listings or indexed by someone). Anyway, I thought this one was nice with horses on both sides, and a nice antiqued high relief design.
Nice thing about these "obscure" pieces is that you can usually get them for basically nothing too!

Ah, I forgot about this thread. Here's my newest Barber type coin purchased from jom about two weeks ago now.
