You're absolutely right.  I can't tell you how many hearts I had to break and hopes I had to dash when I worked at the brick and mortar shop with stuff like this.  People would bring things like this, stuff from Littleton, stuff bought off the TV and we'd have to tell them what they had was either worthless or worth far less than they paid for it.  And some of these people really needed some significant money when they came to sell to us.  But we couldn't help them.  In this hobby, and in life, there are many things which are legal but which aren't necessarily ethical.  If NGC certifies these coins with a special label, that's more than fine, but to sell these coins for such a high markup over what an ordinary uncirculated 1964-D Kennedy sells for, I have a big issue with that. I just don't see what makes them worth that kind of a markup.

I've been thinking.......we have a "For the love of copper" thread, so why not a "For the love of silver" thread?  So, let's give this a try!! Post any coins you want to share, just as long as they're silver.  I'll start us off with my only Faustina the Younger provincial, a silver Tetradrachm minted in Alexandria, Egypt:
    Let's see some great silver!!!

Actually, I do.  I'd like to add that if a someone wants to sell a coin, that they do so in their own sales thread, not in another member's.  I had someone hijack my thread today trying to sell a damaged 2009-D Lincoln Cent for over $2,400.  I closed the thread and reposted in a new thread, but I found that to be extremely rude and it possibly could have damaged my selling reputation if someone thought it was actually me trying to pull that one.

Mohawk got a reaction from R__Rash in How are you preparing your collection for your heirs?
For me, it's actually rather easy.  I have no children and my fiancée and I never plan to.  My sister also has no children and no plan to ever have them, either.  Since I'm male and 2 years older than my sister and 8 years older than my fiancée, odds are I'll predecease them both.  They're my planned heirs and my fiancée is a coin collector and my sister, while she isn't a collector, is very well versed in the kinds of coins I have and their values.  So, for me, it's likely never going to be an issue as both my fiancée and sister are well prepared to handle their respective parts of my collections when I die.  However, if something terrible happens and they both predecease me, I may have to find another strategy.  If that happened, I'd likely just make sure I sold it all off before I died because I'd have no heirs at that point.

Looks like the thread is doing well!! Thanks to everyone who has participated!!! I'll add another of mine to keep us going......here's another one of the small number of Roman coins that I have that isn't Faustina the Younger.  This is a denarius of Julia Domna, who is third in line for empresses I would attempt a full RIC set for (but will likely never get the chance to because Faustina's catalogue is MASSIVE):

I definitely read hobby books.  I've read the Red Whitman guide books when I worked at the brick and mortar for Lincoln Cents, Morgan Dollars, Double Eagles and your Peace Dollar book, Roger.  I don't even collect any of those coins and I enjoyed reading about them!  As for my own personal collecting pursuit, I'm looking for a book that is harder to find than the coins I'm seeking!!! I just cant find a copy of the third volume (the old third volume, not the new one on Hadrian) of the Roman Imperial Coinage to save my life!!! I also have the Aorta reference for Roman coins right on my bedside table right now.  I dig into that one frequently.

There are some times in collecting where a nice, circulated coin can have more character than an MS piece of the same date and denomination.  I'd say this 1948-A 10 Pfennig is one of those pieces.  I really like the dark coloration and the weathered look it has.  These are the seller's pics and it's coming from Latvia, so I'll be waiting for it for a while:

This is an appropriate pickup in considering the awesome pfennig article tj96 shared with us today.  Anytime you can find Muldenhutten Mint East German in MS for under $10, it's a good day!!  These are the seller's pics:

My sick with a head cold early East German streak is continuing!!! This one was another killer deal.....I'm hoping I can complete my rebuilding of my collection before people start moving back into this area and the prices go back up:

Here's a real treasure I picked up for my early East German collection.  The 1953-E 10 pfennig is the second most difficult regular issue to acquire in the early East German 1948-1953 coinage run.  This one is something special and cost me considerably more than my previous pickups, but still at an amazing deal for this coin in this condition.  These are the seller's pics:

And I don't think this was too bad of a pickup for $4.  I won this auction for much less than I thought I would on eBay!  I'm having a good night with early East German:

I had a nice little sickbed pickup from the Muldenhutten Mint today.  1950 is my late mom's birth year.  My maternal lineage is where my German descent comes from and my mom's parents came from East Germany, so this little pfennig is special in lots of ways.  These are the seller's pics:

    Hi Bruce,
No problem.  I'm always glad to help out.  Jonathan also brought up some very good points with his response.  My fiancee and I are some of our favorite dealer's favorite customers.....we're always polite, we pretty much always buy something and we always pay cash.  We're also knowledgeable and have been able to help customers out when the guys at our favorite shop are slammed, just as Jonathan was able to.  And many good things have come our way from this shop, as Jonathan has said.   We're probably headed out there tomorrow actually......gotta go see if they have any new British stuff for my fiancee and any ancients or bird coins for me....I'm hoping to find a new addition for my budding Faustina the Younger collection.
And, to Jonathan, dirty secret here as well.....I've never owned a Red Book either.  What I know about it comes from my time working at a coin shop!  I read the shop's Red Books so that I could know what was in there when I sold them....and we sold A LOT of them!
    Cheers to both of you!
    ~Tom
