NGC Journals

Thank You NGC!

Quality! Quality! Quality! It's been over two years now that I've been submitting coins to NGC. The Customer Service people have been very outstanding! If you have a problem they fix it!! THANKS! The graders have been great, I'm not so concerned about the time, what I want is quality. I just ask that my coins be graded on what they are and not some curve or percentage. THANKS!

GRADING! Now HERE'S a topic!

I, too have bought a few lunches, dinners, and breakfasts for the graders at NGC, only to have "not gradable coins"... ...come back in body bags. I've had a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L Morgan 1884-O that I bought off an auction site, and as good as my untrained eye is, tried to match hairlines from other graded Morgans, and this one had ALOT more hairlines than those graded in MS65! I was psyched! Plus, it had a nice slight cameo on both obverse and reverse. The reverse was a good guess at MS66, if

Grading Gripes: By MWIT

Altered Surfaces - maybe/maybe not. But if you are really, really confident the coin is correctly graded and it has no altered surfaces, then you should have no problems cracking it out and submitting raw to PCGS or NGC.   My personal philosophy is: "Buy the coin, not the holder, provided the coin is in an acceptable holder."The picture submitted by MWIT only shows the obverse, and perhaps the alteration is on the reverse? Even so, it is hard to tell without having coin in hand, but is it p

Grading Gripes?

Live and Learn! In some of my previous journal entries, I?ve done my share of beefing about the long wait only to receive ?body bags? containing coins that wouldn?t grade. My ?contributions? to NGC have paid for a lunch or two in Sarasota. When I joined The Collector?s Society last fall, I was new to the ?graded, slabbed coin? thing. Basically, for the 40-something years I had leisurely collected coins, coins came in plastic flips, cardboard flips, or totally naked (ready to fill a spot in

Final Piece to the Collection

Is it worth it? Well, I got to my mailbox today with eager anticipation of an arrival that would complete my first Registry Set. I was so excited to get that final coin. The coin that I knew I was paying too much for. But I needed that final piece of plastic slabbed silver to put the final touch on my first collection. I opened the package carefully and there it was. I booted up the computer and went to the Collectors' Society web site. My heart was racing. "This is it." I said to mys

IS COIN COLLECTING A HOBBY FOR GEEKS? DOES IT SERVE A PORPOSE? WHY DO I DO IT?

THEY CALL ME A GEEK, BELITTLE AND LAUGH AT ME @ WORK. I BRING NUMISMATIC NEWS TO WORK. THEY GOOF ON ME. I DON'T CARE. THEY BECOME INTRIGUED AS I EXPLAIN WHAT SOME ARE WORTH. THEY SAY "I have this coin, or that coin, at home. THE TALK CONTINUES & THE SEED IS PLANTED! ME: HI. MY NAME IS GERBILKEEPER AND I COLLECT COINS. GROUP: HELLO GERBILKEEPER!! Susan B's coming into their own

the public has discovered the SBA's as a great set to collect and the price of SBA's are going up almost across the board. And some of the higher grades are becoing hard to find. Witness the 81-s and 99-d in higher grade MS. Makes me happy, as I love this series. I don't have the pictures of my set posted yet...but I will dean silver dollar

I CAN'T QUITE REMEMBER WHEN OR FROM WHOM I GOT THIS COIN, BUT I WIGGED OUT WHEN SAW THAT THIS COIN JUMPED FROM 1500 BANNANAS TO 2750.00 OVERNIGHT! 1981-s type 2 PR70 DCAM PCGS HOLY GRAIL OF PROOF SBA'S

ONE HAMMERED ON TELETRADE FOR 3500.00!!!!!!! YOW! Hi! I'm GERBILKEEPER. Just wanted you guys to know that I'm new on the scene, and I'm just getting aquainted to this whole collector's society thing. (which I think is kind of cool) Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on my SUPERCOIN: 1981-S sba TYPE 2 pcgs pr70DCAM....WITH ONLY 34 PCGS POP., is it possible to get BIG BUCKS (at least pcgs price guide price) for this coin? I would assume that in order to assemble a perfect set of

Correcting A Mistake

competitor's grading cost In my previous article, I said PCGS had raised their comparable tier price to $20 per coin with a 10 coin minimum. I just went to their website, and it's actually $18 with a 10 coin minimum. I don't want to mislead anyone, so I'm correcting myself. Also this gives me a chance to put in an image of the back of the $2 bill from my previous entry. :-) 1953Bltn$2

Turnaround Time

27 days, less a holiday Received my second group of coins today (3/24). NGC received them on the 16th of February. So that means it took 27 business days, less one day for President's day holiday. So 26 business days, I used the Economy tier. So while this is longer than my first order took, I'm still very happy with the service. Of course, I'm a pretty mellow guy, maybe I'm too easy to please. :-) All kidding aside, I am happy with the service, and especailly with the prices, as the competi

... and older too. 528 years old. This coin is by far (528 years far ago to be exact) my coolest coin. Look at the date !! The second numeral is called a "lazy four" as it is laying on its side. 1478. Fourteen years BEFORE Columbus took his voyage across the pond, the official minters in Belgium minted this "Briquet". Unlike charcoal (spelled differently too), one could make purchases with this handy little piece of official silver coinage. The regular dating of coins didnt occur unti

Time on web site.

First time putting coins on the Collector's Registry. Well, I spent about three hours putting coins on the Collector's Registry. Not that I had that many coins, but because I am not use to the way the web site operates. The website is very nice and I love to see the pictures that people have posted of their coins. Also a BIG THANK YOU to the individuals that responded to my first post about being the New Kid On The Block. I really appreciate the words of encouragement and hints, tips, et

New Kid On The Block

Just starting back into the Collector/Investor coin world again. Well, I am just starting back into the coin collecting/investing arena again. Just for fun and maybe to help grow some money for my wife and four year old son. Maybe he can use the coins in the future for his college, etc. I am getting into the collecting/investing in the "slab" coins. Obviously, I joined this Collectors Society for $99.00. (Is this tax deductable?) () Anyway, I am a fan of thrid party grading, but the d

The Wild, Wild West Returns (Part 2)

2 Gold Dollars This is my next installment on my Wild, Wild West Signature Set. I have a little more explaining to do on what is included and why. First, I consider (for the purpose of this set) that the West includes all states west of the Mississippi. When the Union Pacific was starting to be built, there was a quote I read that sums up why I'm including everything west of the river. In Don Ball's Book "The Colorful Railroads" he included a quote, and now I forget from whom, that went "...

I did it again

I ran out of money before I ran out of coins:( I believe I see a pattern developing now. I am buying coins faster than I can sell them so I must cease and desist from buying again. In spite of several coins calling to me I must stop and regroup again. My sets are steadily improving while my bank account says OUCH!!! It looks like a couple of weeks on the sidelines while I sell excess and pay off the credit card again. I am sure to visit my friendly coin dealer for some wheeling and dealing bu

re: NGC and How LONG IT TAKES TO GET YOUR COINS BACK!!!

Turnaround time... Is stated in Business days and not calendar days. 15 to 17 days is roughly 3-4 weeks. I've had no problems with using the "Modern" tier as far as timeliness is concerned. When they're shipped, it's usually via Registered Priority Mail... Unless you have money to burn, have a large corporate account, or really needed your coins yesterday, there's no need to spend the extra cash for the FedEx shipping (at least, that's what I've found)

Re:I WANT TO THROW IN THE TOWEL !!!

I dont know if you signed up for NGC eNewsletter I dont know if you signed up for NGC's eNewsletter but in the may 2006 edition they addressed the exact thing about the silver eagle and why it is so hard to get a MS-70 grade coin, I am guessing it is just as hard to get PF70 for the same reasons mentioned in the eNewsletter. You can read the article at www.ngccoin.com/news/enews/current.htm in the "coin of the month" section. I know it is frustrating but since I read their report I can underst
