100 Greatest Set

A nice collection. I saw the newest set of 100 Greatest coins and thought that it was referring to classic coins. I read in Numismatic News that it is referring to modern coins. At that point, I thought that it would be a pretty fun set to colelct. Although it still looks like a fun set to collect, I can say that the majority of the coins are way out of my price range. Coin number 2 is the Sacagawea/Washington Mule. I believe 11 known. To anyone that can complete a set, I take my hat

Easy come..... easy go......

Elation and depression..... So, I helped out at a different branch yesterday and while talking to one of the tellers, I noticed that he had a penny set apart at the top of his coin tray. Usually when I see that, it means wheat penny. However, this was a blank planchet!!! Definitely circulated, but a great find! I switched it out for another penny and put it in my pocket. When I got home and emptied my pockets, I couldn't find the coin, but I figured it just fell out into my car. This mo

My best find ever!!

Star Notes at Work As much as I enjoy working on my NGC registry sets, I enjoy when I get new money in at the bank where I work, because it gives me the opportunity to find fun notes at face value. I hit the mother load today. I have had some 10 straps of $1 bills in the vault for a few weeks and since it was slow today, I told my co-worker I was going to check them for stars. When I opened the FED's plastic outer covering, I looked at the first note and what do I see, but a star! As I wa

Memorial Day

Thank you. First, I would like to thank all of you who have served, all that currently serve and the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our great country! There is no greater feeling than that of being able to live in a country where you have the freedoms that we are able to enjoy.   On to the collecting, I am slowly chugging away at my Lincoln cent collection. I purchased a 1934 online yesterday and look forward to it coming in and adding it to my set. I think I am

It's Coin Day

One of two days in the month when I get paid and immediately go to add to my collection. We all look forward to the days when we get paid so we can go add to our collections. For me, it's today and I look forward to getting home and purchasing some coins to add to my collection. In addition, I have some storage boxes that UPS should be delivering today. That will give me an excuse to pull the whole collection out and do some organizing. I've been finding out that even though slabs are mean

Fun Few Days

Still adding away Good afternoon, everyone. The past few days have been fun and interesting. As with most, payday brought the purchasing of more coins. I alway lose a little sleep the morning of payday due to waking up early to spend my coin money before having to go to work. This time I added three Lincoln cents to my collection. Now I play the waiting game for the mail carrier to put them in my mail box. At work yesterday, a customer made a cash deposit with a lot of coins. This is a

Work Paid Off

Star Note Find I don't normally collect currency, but I work at a bank, so when we get in brand new money from the FED, I'll take a look through it for serial numbers, star notes, etc. Yesterday, we got in $1000 in brand new $1's, so this morning, I took a look through them and found three consecutive star notes. The thrill of discovery was definitely there. It is my best find in the last 5 years or so. About 5 years ago, we got in some $5s and I found two with a drop of green ink that s

Anxious and impatient

Pesky Mortgage Too bad the mortgage keeps getting in the way of my collecting "wants". Of course, my wife "wants" to not be kicked out of the house. I have to obey the boss, right? I am anxiously awaiting Monday, when I get paid and can order some new coins. I think I will look to add to my Kennedy collection. The closer I get to completion, the harder it is to find those coins. Oh well. That's the fun of the hunt. Someone mentioned on here a week or so ago, that some sets can be boug

Interesting Idea

For a Pedigree Type Set I was at home last night reading "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual" by Scott A Travers and I got a fun idea for a custom set. As with anything, we reap the benefits of the work done by those before us. Many of the coins we enjoy today were once upon a time ago protected by someone else. We have all read about the giants of Numismatics, such as Louis E Eliasberg, Edward H.R. Green, etc. I thought it would be fun to find and collect a type set made up of coins wi

Goals for 2011

These may be a stretch, but that's what makes it fun. We're a little ways into the new year, but I think I have finally narrowed down some collecting goals. 1. Achieve 30,000 points. 2. Finish my Kennedy Proof set. 3. Get to 20% completion on my Morgan set. 4. Get to within 75% completion on my Lincoln Cent set. 5. Have a complete Sacagawea set. 6. Start a MS Silver Eagle set. (Any completion percentage is fine) I think that should be enough to keep me busy throughout the

2011..... Wow....

It has been interesting so far. So in the short time that we have had 2011 on the calender, we have seen the points on our Lincoln Cent collections soar and them plummet. That was a fun ride for the 24 - 48 hours that it lasted. Now, Dallas was gifted with 5 inches of snow two days before the Super Bowl. Makes me glad that I had today off and that the mailman got me some coins before Snowmageddon let loose. I got a very nice MS63 1884-O Morgan and a few Kennedy halves in the mail yesterda

Lincoln Cents

Easy come, easy go... So when I woke up this morning, the Lincoln cent roller coaster had gone back down the hill. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. Time to look forward. I purchased 3 more Kennedy Proofs and an 1884-O Morgan for my collection. I'm also keeping my eye on an auction for a PF70 Lincoln Dollar. I hope to win that and get my collection up to date. On another note, I find it hard to not stray with my collecting goals, especially when reading the great articles of a publ

Presidential Dollars

Almost finished. I ordered the Buchanan and Polk dollars earlier and realized that I am almost caught up with this series. I lack the Abraham Lincoln dollar and the James Monroe dollar in PF 70. I have been waiting to upgrade my Monroe dollar, because it was a birthday present from a buddy of mine. I won't sell it; just replace it. As far as the Lincoln dollar, I have felt that it is a little over valued. I think that with the hype from last year's Lincoln pennies, the price is a bit

It's In the Mail.....

The joys of coins in the mailbox. I was discussing coins with a non-collecting co-worker earlier and I told him that I love it when I come home and have coins in the mailbox. After a tough day when not much goes the way you want it to, it makes me feel better when I have coins sitting in my mailbox. He told me that I'm probably the only person who would ever say that. I think that we all feel that way. I would venture to guess that every day, (Except Sunday, of course), one of us on her

2010 In Review

It was a fun year. I would like to take a few minutes to jot down some thoughts about my collecting this year. I count myself blessed that in a tumultuous economy, I was able to continue collecting, albeit in a diminished capacity. I had set a goal at the beginning of the year to amass 20,000 registry points. It appears I will fall a little short of that goal, but I made great strides. It's a lot of fun to compete against other collectors pursuing their love of the hobby. I anticipate b

Over Extending

Sacagawea Dollars I am always worried about overextending myself and my collection. I am now debating on whether or not to get the Sacagawea dollars. The big pro is that it is not an expensive set and in PF69, I could be up to date for around $150 dollars. At that point, it would just be a matter of updating every year. The big con is that it would be another set that I am actively working. This would be in addition to the PF 70 Presidential Dollars, PF69 State Quarters and PF69 Kennedy H

Computer Problem

Led to NGC Website Problem Last night was not much fun, as I had 5 new coins to enter into my collection on the website. In addition, I had finished taking and editing pictures to once again bring my pictures to 100% on the website. However, when I tried to log into the website, my computer was dragging and not loading the pages. Ironically enough, it was only doing this with NGC's website! It was very frustrating. I felt like a kid who had received his allowance and raced down to the ca

Die Clash?

Please give me your opinions. Good afternoon, everyone. I am looking to start a weekend of relaxation and catching up on my numismatic reading. However, I finally got around to taking a good picture of a particular coin. I believe that this is a die clash. You can notice a partial impression of the Lincoln Memorial on the backside of President Lincoln's head. That is my opinion, but the joy of this website is that I get to pick the brains of those more experienced than I. Please let me

Birthdays are great...

...for collecting coins. I had a birthday last Sunday and it turned out to be fruitful for my coin collection. In addition to the coins that I would have normally gotten with this paycheck, my co-workers chipped in and got me the 2006 Silver State Quarter set and my parents got me the 2007 Silver State Quarter set. Too bad I can't have a birthday every month.   Happy Collecting. Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Starting off to be a great weekend

With new additions. This weekend is starting off pretty well. I got plenty of sleep, went to the gym early, came home and mowed the lawn, so the work is all done. After that, I sat down and added two coins to my collection: a 2004 Kennedy PF69 Clad and a 2008 Alaska Quarter PF69 Clad. Now, I get to sit down and read my NN magazine. Later on, I'll be grilling some chicken outside on the grill. A clean house, coins and grilling. Does it get any better than that?! Happy collecting, ever

2010 Presidential Dollars PF70

Holy Cow Does anyone else think that the prices are inflated because President Lincoln is included this year? 2007, 2008 and 2009 are ranging in price from $125 - $200 per set, however, the 2010 set is going for upwards of $300!!! This is going to put a huge dent in my collecting budget. I would be willing to bet that next year, the price goes back down.   Happy collecting everyone. And good luck with your 2010 Presidents set.   Marcus

Collecting Goal For 2010

I love the competition! I love the NGC website, the points and the rankings. This helps to make the hobby even more fun. I have decided that my goal for 2010 will be to end the year inside the 2000 ranking. As of now, that would require 10,000 points. I figure that with everyone else upgrading and adding to their sets this year, I would probably need about 12,000 points to be safe. I have a few plans for getting there, including completeing my PF70 Presidents set and my PF69 State Quar

The trouble with slabs....

They take up so much room! ) I realized a little while ago that slabbed, certified coins sure do take up a lot of room in a safe deposit box. Not that I am complaining, mind you. I love my coins and I love knowing that they are not fake. I also am blessed to have the ability to collect. That is something I do not want to take for granted. I have gotten to the point where I need a larger safe box, as the lid is popping off of mine due to the volume of coins. Someone would make a killi

ANA Show

What an experience! I recently attended the ANA Money Show in Ft Worth. First, I have to say that it was great having it held in my backyard. I have not seen any attendance reports yet. Hopefully, they will be included in my next publication. I am hoping that the attendance will be high enough that the ANA will come back soon. My first thought was awe at the sheer size of the convention hall. I have been to a few coin shows in my short time of collecting, but nothing of this magnitude.

Collecting Interests

Sometimes, the only constant is change. I have found during my few years of collecting, that starting a collection doesnt always mean that you will finish that colletion first. Sometimes, the obstacle is finances, while other times, it is finding something new that you are interested in. That is one of the reasons I love this hobby so much. There are so many great coins out there that you can be in love with one type today and another type the next. I started off working on Lincolns in MS
