New Finished Set

Westward Journey This wasn't a hard or time consuming set, but these coins came out as I was starting to get interested in collecting and I thought they were a nice set. So, that, combined with the fact that they are inexpensive and a short set, I decided to pick them up. I'm kind of digging these short, easy to complete sets. I may work on the Susan B Anthony set next. Not as easy as this one, but still fairly short. Only 23 days until the start of the ANA National Money Show in Dallas

National Money Show

Excitement and Disappointment The ANA National Money Show is coming to my home of Dallas, TX. I went to the show in Ft Worth a couple of years ago and had a great time. I'm definitely looking forward to this one as well. Unfortunately, I will only be able to go on Saturday, so hopefully there will still be plenty for me to buy. Do yourself a favor and if you're coming from out of town, take a moment to stop by the State Fair. It's lots of fun and you can sample some fried concoctions.

Hello Everyone

It's been awhile. I have been on hiatus from collection for a number of months. I am looking to make a career change to photography, so my money has been spent setting up a camera system so that I can slowly practice and transition. Over the weekend, I picked up a few coins: 2012 Kennedys, Lincoln and Sacagawea all in proof to get those collections back up to date. In addition, I picked up a Lincoln for my MS65 set, a Morgan for my MS63 collection and a couple of the Westward Expansion Ni

Collection Insurance

Thank you. I appreciate the feedback from so many of you. It seems that the two most suggested routes are through the ANA. They seem to have an agent with AXA that offers policies to ANA members. The other suggested route is through my homeowners policy. I had looked into that with my insurance company, but it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. I think I will look into the ANA option. Thank you again for the suggestions. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here.

Coin Insurance

Any Suggestions I'm looking to insure my collection. So far, I have not been able to get a lot of information from the large insurance companies. All I've been able to find quotes for are from insurance companies that I've never heard of. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to who you have your coins insured with? Thank you for the help.   Marcus

It's been awhile

Since I've posted an entry Good morning, everyone. It's been awhile since I've been on here. A lot has been happening in the hobby, to say the least. The PCGS coins being deleted from the sets has probably been the biggest story as of late. I've been working on Commemorative half dollars. I like being able to get a different design with each order within the same set. It is also a nice reminder of what has happened in the country in the moderate time I have been alive. I was born in 19

2012 Collecting Goals

It's almost the new year. Good afternoon, everyone! I've been thinking about what I want to accomplish in the coming year and Ive come to one constant. As my three and a half year Kennedy Half Proof saga comes to a close at the end of the month, I realize that I don't want to commit myself fully to one set in 2012, like I did this year to finish my Kennedy set. In light of that, I decided I am going to spend 2012 dabbling around in different areas of interest and not focus on "percentge co

Paience Works

So does taking a little time off of work. ) I am down to two coins in my Kennedy proof collection (1993 Silver and 1998 Specimen). The only '93 I had been able to find was one on Ebay going for $94 Or Best Offer. I offered the seller $50 for the $37 coin, but it was rejected. I figured it would be a hole for a while longer than I wanted. So this morning, I was looking at coins and I decided on a hunch to check again. I found another one for $31.50! Needless to say, I snatched it up as

Registry Set Awards

It's that time of year again. Good morning, everyone. I just wanted to wish everyone luck in their pursuit of registry set awards. I am hoping to get a presentation award for my Presidential Dollar set. (Hint, Hint, NGC. ) Good luck to all and I can't wait to see the winning sets.   Marcus

2011 Goals

Closing in on the end of the year 1. Achieve 30,000 points. (28,373. I have three coins in the mail and a couple more to order in a week or so, but it los like I will fall a little short on this one) 2. Finish my Kennedy Proof set. (This one will go down to the wire. Once I get these three coins in the mail, I will be short 3 coins. Two of them are a bit pricey, but it's time to bite the bullet. The last, I was not able to find on Ebay the last time I looked. That may keep me from

I couldn't resist....

I hated to do it... I'm getting ready to head out on vacation on Wednesday. Unfortunately, (Fortunately, really) I found a great deal on some coins I couldn't pass up, so I ordered them. Now, they'll be sitting at the post office for awhile waiting for me to come home. Oh well. Such is life. Happy Thanksgiving. May we all take a turkey nap! Happy collecting. Veteran's Day

Thank you. With Veteran's Day coming up on Friday, I would like to take a quick second to thank any of you out there who serve or have served in the past. Thank you and your families for the sacrifices that you have made for our country. We get to do things like this because of people like you.   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Coin Listing Spreadsheet

For insurance purposes Does anyone know if you can print out your set listings as a spreadsheet? I want to insure my coins and this would be a great listing to provide to my insurance company. I would really rather not have to create my own spreadsheet. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Silver American Eagles

An outsider's point of view First, I do not currently collect SAE's so I did not have a "horse in the race" for last week's debacle. Second, I just read the journal written by DennyJW. His letter from the mint states that they are working to review the process for future orders. It seems to me that the mint would want to cater to its long term customers. The speculators will be out of the picture when the economy improves and the price of silver goes back down. The true collectors will

Roots

How I got started I hear people talking about the "Silver Finds" days in the mid '60s after the mint changed the composition of coins. I also hear people talk about how they filled their Whitman Lincoln Cent albums. Fun times, I'm sure. For me, it started in 2004 with the release of the quarter for the great state of Texas, my home state. Then, I fell in love with the Florida quarter. Later, the Wisconsin quarter came out with its extra leaves. I later found a nice, helpful coin dealer

Stolen Coins From Mint

Interesting dilemma for the mint. I was reading about this mint officer who stole edgeless dollar coins from the mint and it makes me wonder if the mint plans to pursue the return of these coins. After the Langbord '33 Double Eagles case, the attorney for the government said that they wanted to set the precedent that if it was stolen from the mint, it will be pursued. Since the coins were sold to a dealer who in turn probably had them certified, there is a record. The catch 22 is that if

The next step

Where to go from here...... As I find myself winding down on my Kennedy Proof collection, my next plan is to finish my Lincoln Cent 1934 - 1958 collection. Hopefully I'll have that finished by March. I don't have too much further to go. After that, I find myself torn with what to do next. I love Morgan dollars and have become really interested in commemorative dollars but, I don't think I want to embark on another extremely large collection at this time. (Morgans = 105 coins and Commems =

The results are in.....

50/50 I got an email from NGC yesterday saying that my coins had shipped. I went to the website to see how they did. It was so so. San Francisco Old Mint - PF70 UC Jamestown - PF70 UC Not too bad! 1963 D Franklin Half - MS63 1961 Franklin Half - PF65 1949 D Franklin Half - Unc Dtl - Improperly cleaned. It was an interesting experience. Not quite what I was hoping for, but I will just have to be a little more picky with what I send next time. Happy collecting everyone. Marc

UGH!!!

My coins made it to quality control! I've been checking almost every day and now they are in quality control. Unfortunately, the grades aren't up yet. For those of you who submit coins regularly, I don't know how you can stand this wait. Hopefully within the next day or so, I'll know how they did. I'll keep you posted.   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Interesting Day

Ups and Downs My commute home took about an hour and a half longer than normal, due to an accident downtown. But on the bright side, I found a great radar $1 note at work. The serial number is E07077070E. It's seen its share of use, but overall, it isn't too bad. Not only is it a fun find, but my wife and I were married July 7, 2007, so it's sort of like a wedding note. Tomorrow, I hope to receive the 1965 and 1966 SMS Proofs that I ordered on Saturday. Still working on the Kennedy set

Getting Closer

Kennedy Half Collection I started the day needing 14 more coins to be complete. I had some credit card cash available, so I decided to see what I could get towards this collection. I ended up winning two auctions on Ebay; a 1965 SMS 66 and a 1966 SMS 67. That will bring me down to 12 before having a complete set. One of my collecting goals was to complete this set. It's going to come down to the wire, but I think I can make it. It will be nice to turn this into a "maintenance set" in t

First Coin Submission

Very Impatient. I upgraded my membership, received my coupon for 5 free gradings and sent in some coins. I sent in a San Francisco Mint Commem., Jamestown Commem., and three Franklin Halves. I think all should come back with decent grades, but I was more interested in the process. So, right now, my status is submitted for grading. From those of you with more experience, the more you check the status, the faster it goes, right? Just kidding. I have read people's journals talking abo

State Quarters.....

Are finished! Whew. I finally broke down and bought the 1999 Silver set. I got them in today and just finished entering the serial numbers. It's so nice to not see any blanks when I look at the set. I'll take pictures over the next couple of days and be 100% finished. Next is to focus on my Lincoln Cent 1934 - 1958 set. Not counting the 1955 DDO, I am only 22 coins away from finishing that one. The Kennedy Proofs, I am around 20 coins away as well. Happy collecting to everyone! Mar

Numismatic Shopping

I found a new source this morning. I was surfing around the internet this morning and I decided to go to Coin World's website. In looking around there, I found that they have a market place. I was very excited about this. It does not have the same volume of merchandise that ebay has, but it did have a lot of variety and I feel safer buying non graded merchandise from there. Does anyone out there have other options for safe buying? Also, coin day was yesterday for a lot of us with direct
