I don't like that Peace buck, wait I do like it, on the other hand........ It's one of those coins that I'm not a fan of, but find it intriguing. The reverse does have some boom to it. Nice imaging.

Surprise pick-up from Legend & Morphy. I love this type of toning. I own two other Morgans with similar toning. This is an 84-CC. I got it for a great price.

Was bidding on this coin and didn't win it. A few days ago Heritage came back and asked if I wanted it at my last bid. The winner must have backed out.

Congrats on your (surprise) win. I didn't know that there was an option to back out of a winning bid...

+1, this would seem to encourage shil bidding.

Agreed. Was very surprised they came back to me over 5 days after the bidding closed. I trust Heritage Auctions. I've won many coins well below my max bid. I think it's a case of someone not being able to pay rather than something nefarious.

Thanks Jason. I didn't either. The offer came 5 days after the auction closed. Either way, I'm happy to add this to my collection.

I feel that a shill had to be involved... God forbid I back out of a bid at auction...

they'd probably ban me for life. I once bid on a coin I really wanted - but the computer

had just switched to the next lot ( which I ended up winning in error ) ... Wasn't that big

a deal ... I ended up selling it for a small profit at the next coin show. Still, it could have

been worse.

Tell me what happened here.... In may I bid on a Lincoln and was high bidder, at the last minute I was out bid. Oh well, it happens right? a couple days later I am checking post auction buys etc, and the coin is in the company's inventory. The next month the coin is in the auction again with a high reserve (the first auction there was no reserve). The coin does not sell and goes into inventory again. A few days later the coin is for sale at another auction site with an even higher reserve. This has sort of changed my perception of these no reserve auctions with their higher fees. It is obvious I was bidding against the house and did not fall for the last sucker bid. Had I made the last bid on this coin, with all the fees I would have paid over 40% of what I saw a simular coin sell at retail

Was that a Heritage Auction?

This occurred during the last Heritage Signature Auction in July. I saw the 1903 MS66 that I posted in this thread and thought to bid on it. The following events all occurred before the live auction session. I bid on the coin and was the high bidder for a while. Days before the live auction, I was outbid . I put in my max bid and was still not the highest bidder. I didn't think the coin was worth more, so I stopped bidding. It went to the live auction. I must have been the under bidder going into the live auction. I did not participate in the Live auctions because, like I said earlier, the coin was already higher than I was willing to pay.

I won a few other coins from the auction, but not the 1903. I was invoiced. I paid the invoice. Later that week, I was contacted by Heritage and asked if I wanted to buy the 1903 MS66 for my last bid. I wrote back that I would purchase it. That's the story.

Edited for grammar....

On Heritage Live I once hit the bid button by mistake on the lot PREVIOUS to the lot I was interested in. I was looking down at the catalogue in my lap at the time and had no idea the cursor was above the bid link, and was basically shifting my chair. AS SOON AS I realized what I had done I called Heritage, and they cancelled out my bid. In the ensuing kerfluffle of trying to contact HA I never did get a bid in on the lot I was interested in.

It was Heritage, but the big problem was the coin went in to Heritage's inventory not to another collector, and there was no mention of a reserve on the coin. Don't get me wrong I have no problem with a reserve, but don't let me think that that I am bidding against a person, and it turns out to be the house.

I'd venture that this happens alot more than we might like/know about. Anytime I bid in on-line sites like Heritage I put in my max and thats that; I will win or lose and either way is fine for me.

Just got this coin in the mail today from Mumu! It's a beauty in hand! I'm still working on some better pictures but these really show off the great colors. It's in a NGC holder, graded MS64.

Edited to update picture to a more accurate representation of the coin in hand.

My latest add to my 19th Century Type Set, a nicely toned 1838 No Drapery, Small Stars Half Dime with Green sticker. It is the V-1 Variety in Die State 1.

Cheers !
