Popular Post leeg
The 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Silver Half Dollar never get's any love. You can find some nice ones out there. Such as mine above from CRO. A little history: Inquiry as to the purpose of the issue has brought a letter from F. B. Davison, Director-General, as follows: ‘I take pleasure in stating that the object of the proposed issue of Monroe Centennial souvenir half dollars is that we may use same for the purpose of raising funds with which to justify the great cost of reproducing the high lights of American history, which reproduction is to be advised by an historical commission composed of the heads of universities, colleges and secondary educational institutions in the State of California. Upon the presentation of these reproductions a series of educational films may be made as a contribution of civilization to be used in connection with our schools and other education agencies.’ The above letter has the following heading: ‘Monroe Doctrine Centennial. First Annual American Historical Revue and Motion Picture Industrial Exposition, Commemorating the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, June 1, 1823, to June 30, 1923, Under the Direction and Supervision of the Motion Picture Industry. Looks like a regular san Francisco minted 1941 Jefferson "s" nickel with some machine DOUBLING of the MM mintmark and a little enviromental damage that has had the MM possibly repunched by hand. Do to this being a normal proccess in the creation of the coin. I believe although the MM is distorted this is common and is just a nice CIRCULATED 1941 s nickel and good addition to a coin or nickel COLLECTION! It is possible it is an error coin, however I do not believe it is. I am not an expert so please do not take just my word for it get other opinions as I do not want to mislead you or give you wrong info, It is a nice find and it is an early Jefferson nickel as the first year was 1938 of this type of Nickel, yours is from the third year of issue. Hope this helps a little and good luck. Capone1929
Member: Seasoned Veteran DWLange Posted June 4, 2018 Member: Seasoned Veteran Share Posted June 4, 2018 Rather than machine doubling or strike doubling, it is actually the result of die erosion. AKA die abrasion, this is simply the steel wearing from repeated use of the dies. The erosion lines radiate outward from the center and are most evident on peripheral features, such as the legends and mintmark. There is no added value to this, as it's a natural effect that occurs to all dies if used long enough.

JIM F.
Finally, after many years, I have a 1910-S Lincoln. As a kid in the 70's it was impossible to find in change, and a bit pricey back then from the coin shops. So now I have one graded by PCGS in MS-62 BN and under 100 bucks. It's about time. robec1347 and LINCOLNMAN

And yes, I bought the coin from Heritage. This was, by far, the most I've ever paid for a single coin. But I've been squirreling away money a little at a time for over a decade for just this kind of purchase. This is NOT my typical purchase level... not even close! The toning is electrically vivid and the luster underneath it is flashy... makes for one of the most spectacular looking coins I've ever owned. It is without question the centerpiece of my entire coin collection. Is it part of a Barber set? Sort of. I've been slowly pecking away for about 18 months. I'm not even a quarter of the way to completion. I'll probably never finish it up to my standards given my budget, but it's a fun way to pass my hobby time. What a rare beauty Bob! I love civil war tokens, especially battle field type (general area) ones. very nice win, find, score, and token (coin). Appears to be in great condition XF-AU in the photos. If you don't mind me asking, no numbers needed, but did it set you back much? I don't mind, especially since I got it for what I consider to be a good price. First, a little clarification: It is a Merchant Token, which predates the Civil War (I'm from Mississippi, so I cringe to call it that). It is actually the only Merchant Token from Mississippi in Russel Rulau's token book. This token was struck in several different metals, and it is hard to tell from those pictures, but this one appears to be a Miller 3, which is copper, or maybe a Miller 4, which is brass. If it is copper, it does not look like it has original surfaces, but since I have not seen an M3 for sale since I have been collecting them, I was willing to give it a shot. I have an M4 in AU that I bought years ago for around $100, and, even though those don't come up for sale all that often, right now, there are two for sale on Ebay . One looks AU, and is $150 plus $16.50 shipping , and the other is an NGC MS63, for $300. So, having said all of that, I got this one for $50, including shipping.
