I have two sets that I am focused on presently.  I am easily distracted by round shiny objects and will buy coins for the multitude of other ongoing sets.  The first set, I was going to find all 1956-1964 Reverse B silver Washington Quarters.  That has led to an attempt to fill all the holes from 1932-1964 in a two-set folder.  This is a raw mint state coin set.  Although, I have found a couple slabbed coins for about the same price as raw coins.  I cracked them out to put into the folder.  Most of the set so far has been purchases from eBay.  That is no easy task.  I have spent hours upon hours looking for coins to go in this set.  While I have filled a lot of the holes in the folder from eBay purchases, I have also begun to fill a tube of junk silver Washington quarters.  The bad purchases were hairlines and coins that looked mint state in the pic but, were not in hand.  I'm a little over half of the two-set folder filled and still haven't found all the Reverse B quarters.  In mint state.

My second set is my moped set.  You know, the set you have, but, you don't want people to see you have it.  I wanted to do the NGC registry thing.  When I looked into the registry set game, I found it was going to be expensive to compete in the upper echelons.  The registry set I chose is 357 slots and affordable in high grades.  I'll never finish the set, but it does allow me to fill holes with a variety of high point coins.  There is mint state, proofs, SMS, and satin finish coins in the set.  Every date, mintmark and variety as well.  The most fascinating aspect of this coin, for me, is that it is a long running series that has had no major design changes to the obverse or reverse.  The lowly Roosevelt dime.  The set has actually been rewarding.  Trying to put a blast white set of 1946-1964 dimes together is not as easy as it seems.  From 1965-Present, some years have less than 10 graded in full torch.  To stay near the top, 1000+ point coins are a must.  My highest point coin in the set?  A 1985-D NGC graded MS 67 FT.  The most expensive coin in the set?  The one below and it ain't SMS.

Ive just been sitting and looking through the registry at all different types of sets. Theres so many out there I want to try really bad. In reality though I better finish the 3 I got started. The main ones is the quarters and halves. But I think its healthy to have at least one or maybe 2 small sets also that only require 5 coins or so. That makes it easier to complete and also gives you a break from the others every once in a while. I want to state thats just my opinion. Others may find something that works better for them or may not want to work on anything else. Thats just the approach Im using and my logic behind it. Theres so many beautifully designed coins out there. All the very talented engravers. Its hard to collect them all unless you do a type set or something. Which is something Id be interested in doing. I got a type set started but I havent really worked on it. I just bought coins I liked and added them to it as I got them. But as I looked through the registry I visited some of my friends sets on here. I go admire them every once in a while. They got some stunning coins. And I looked at some sets of random different denominations. Theres so many different ones I love to start but in reality I cant do them all. Its like going to an ice cream shop and trying to figure out what flavor you want when you love them all.

Ever considered the mint sets for your birth year or your son? Not many coins to complete.

Several larger sets have “short sets” that are still challenging, but attainable to complete. Example: 1934-1938 Buffalo nickels.

Magnificent short set. It has its own Capital Plastics holder. Finding a really nice 1934-D is the key. Not easy in high condition.

I know this is a coin forum but in the sense of what I collect I'd summarize it as "dead & dying media".  

Comics got me first.  I was reading & collecting those (not preserving) as early as the 1st grade.  That continued through high school then I hit a gap.  I sporadically returned to the format as I got older but less so for the content and more for the significance of certain issues or the appeal of certain covers.

Cards.  2nd in line.  Both sports & non-sports.  Very few of the sports cards do I have emotional attachment to, though.  Oddball, vintage non-sports, and food issues have my heart in that world.

Vinyl.  Originally started as a means to amass a music library.  In the late 80s and early 90s I was just a poor lil kid that routinely shopped at thrift stores (still do!).  That was about the time a lot of older folks were dumping vinyl collections and upgrading to CDs as they came to market.  I could buy 1 CD for $16 or 16 LPs (or 32 7 inches).  So the choice was pretty clear.  Besides, a lot of punk bands could only issue releases on 7" vinyl due to the lower production costs so that fit in reasonably well.  I still come across decent finds occasionally at the thrift stores but it's rarely more than 1 or 2 items.  Nowadays it's more likely I'll find a duplicate but different pressing to add to the collection.  Like a South African pressing of Abba "Arrival" I came across last year in a Goodwill here in Texas.  How it made it here I don't know but that's part of the fun.  I'd guesstimate 300 in the collection currently.

Coins.  I guess the first coins I collected were back in '84 when my dad made a trip to Scotland and returned with a coin purse full of shrapnel for my brother and I.  After that I'd always pluck out any foreign coinage I'd come across and throw it in a jar.  It wasn't until 2016 that I started looking at coin collecting seriously.  Started with CRH to pass the time.  That quickly grew into an appreciation for Jefferson & Buffalo nickels.  These days I still have a decent Buffalo set.  Mid-century Mexican silver is a love.  Ultimately it's more about the knowledge and accomplishment though.  I'd prefer to track down raw coins with delightful varieties or exceptional qualities, get them graded, then bring them to market for a true collector.

And recently, past 5 years or so, the other dead & dying media.  Cassette tapes & VHS.  On the VHS side I'll always scoop up any factory sealed blanks.  Not that they're worth anything more than a few bucks to people still running ancient home security systems but I appreciate the progression of the package design.  

That's probably about it.  But as I'm sure most of you can relate, if you're a collector it's hard not to appreciate oddities and things that make you go 'oooh'.

Thats very interesting. I had a bunch of old vinys given to me a while back. They are in very good shape. It was my wifes aunts collection from when she was young. Ive been wanting to look up the values of some. There are a couple with the plastic wrap still on them. Like the Jose Feliciano. She was talking about taking them to the dump cause she had them stored for years and years. Said they were just taking up space. Said they was from her teenage years. She asked if I knew anyone who would want them. I told her I would love to have them. She saw junk and I saw some very wonderful well preserved vinys. I told the old lady some may be worth something and some may not. Ive been happily keeping them stored in a tote. Ive been thinking about framing some and hanging them on the wall. Such as the Nat King Cole. Theres probably 20 or more. The Cherry Pink is signed. I dont know if its whoever owned it or an autograph of some kind. May just be the previous owner of the record before her.

That's cool to get gifted a bunch of records from the original owner (most likely).  I'd say grab yourself a cheap-o record player to see if they're your jam on not.  I was curious about that Cher 45.  The A side should be "Dark Lady".  Never heard it so I just played it on YouTube and it's a pretty decent tune.  That's the kind I'd grab if I came across it and it wasn't scratched.  I rarely check valuations on records since they're still first & foremost a music delivery system for me and I play them fairly regularly.  But if you're interested, the discogs site is pretty much accepted as a good gauge.  Mostly because it has a marketplace so you can see actual bid/ask prices rather than a static "price guide".  I use the site quite regularly when looking up pressing variations.

From the looks she was into jazz, country, rock , and blues. Theres a few country like Glenn Campbell. Which I like. Id be interested in listening to that. And some Elvis, Sam Cooke, and others. Several Ive never heard of. Some kind of jazz. I like listening to stuff like that once in a while also. Ill probably leave the ones that arent opened in the plastic. It amazed me of how great of shape the covers are in. Records to. Dont look like they been used hardly any.

To get back to the coins I'll share one I don't have anymore.  1943 Mo 20 Centavos NGC MS65 in a sweet, sweet chocolate brown.  Picked it and a 1945 copy up raw at the little show in Grapevine, submitted them for grading/encapsulation and parted with them last year sometime.  I know the Mexico coin collectors appreciate the 20 centavos but I so do love the design and the way the bronze turns.

Ive been thinking real hard on some type of birth year set. I was born in 82 so Ive been thinking about all the varities of the 1982 Lincoln cent. Also the proof. All except the rare one. Id have to sell a kidney or something to get it. That would be a fun birth set to do. Try and get them all in high grades. Ive had many people tell me I should consider doing a birth set. I think I will make an attempt soon.

Consider the 1982 proof set first. Five coins in the set and should be readily available in high grades!

Not a bad idea....I believe I have a 1982 MS or PF67 Red Penny that I picked up at FUN 2020 for like $20 when I just wanted to wipe out my allocated $$$ for coins on the final Sunday.

I just made a purchase from the US Mint today and it brings up another type I enjoy collecting. More into the moderns. I just bought the latest Innovation Dollars reverse proof set. So far since the first coin came out in 2018 I have all the proofs and reverse proofs. I like to collect these in the original government packaging. I really liked it when they was releasing the reverse proofs in the single packages. I enjoyed the boxes and the cool facts they had printed inside. The last couple years they came all in one case like the proofs. These are great for people on a budget to collect. Ive bought every one straight from the mint. I hope to keep collecting them as they come out and try to have the whole entire set when they are finished.

How many collectors on here collect colonial day coins? I love those old coppers. Vermonts, Connecticuts, and several others. I like those old Fugio cents. Also like those really old shillings. Dont have to exactly be struck in the US. Coins our founding fathers would have packed in their pockets. I have a love for those old coins. If anyone has any theyd like to share I really love to see them if you want to post them. I enjoy the history of that time period more than any other. All I have is that one copper I shared a few post back.

The time Ive been a member of this forum Ive learned alot of members main interest. I would like to learn about more members and also more about the ones I already know. It dont have to be your main interest. It can be your smallest sets that you still like.  Hopefully some new collectors can get some value from this thread. Even more expirenced collectors may get some value from it. Its open for anyone.

Your very welcome. I can tell your willing to learn and I think you will do well. Cant ask for a better hobby to get into. Lots of fun and educational. This forum is an excellent place to learn. Ive learned quite alot on here reading all the post and links people provide. And by asking questions. The experts on here answered many questions for me that helped me along the way. Feel free to come back and post here anytime you like. If you find an area you want to collect or things you learned. There are several people on here that would love to hear about it and help you improve. If your willing to learn and want to learn they are more than happy to help you. Its great to have you on the forum.
