It has been a while since I had an opportunity to photograph more of the coins from my Whitman bookshelf album of Jefferson nickels from 1938 to 1964.  The last coins I had posted were issues of 1942.  I'm going to skip ahead for now to a coin of little monetary value but of some sentimental value.

I received this 1957-D nickel in change from a cashier at my high school cafeteria in or about 1976.  The coin is absolutely mint state despite having been issued nearly twenty years before I so received it. It was struck from worn dies, as indicated by the "orange peel" effect in some areas and the die crack at the top of Jefferson's head yet was strongly struck with most of the steps visible.

In that case we will depart from tradition and designate it, over any objections, as a 1957-D AU-59 MS (most steps).  I am afraid designating it an MS (Mint State) after finding it in circulation by your own admission, would set a dangerous precedent.  🤔

Correct misspelling.

Dueling opinions, eh?  Well, I think PCGS is a stricter grader.  So there!  What would NGC say?  Probably wear and tear noted on the hair aggravated by a washed-out look that is suggestive of exposure to diluted bleach.  But then, what do I know?

Thanks for asking, it is what I call a true MS 66, Some are not. As you may well know. What most people do not know is there are not many MS 68,69 and 70 for nickels. That is why LEM's set is so nice with its higher MS coins.

Has anyone heard from @Lem E?  I miss that dude.  He is one of the good ones.

I have not heard from him. I miss him, too.  And I was one of the bad ones. One day I posted a coin, a 2-oz. 1804 siver dollar I lovingly referred to as an authorized counterfeit. Time passed. He saw it and left, not a Like, but a glowing comment. I sent it to him. I do hope all is okay in his neck of the woods.
