@Alex in PA. this happened to my daughter about 15 years ago at PNC bank . I couldn’t believe it either , the lady behind counter was dead serious too . She was like “well the machine is inside the building sweetie that means it reserved for customers only” she was belittling my daughter in front of me … My daughter wanted to be a big girl that day and do all work herself I stood on sidelines in bank lobby then when I heard “dad ! come here!” Lol! I knew it was time to step in … I asked the lady where was sign that says only customers were allowed use the machine ? She said they just gotten the machine about a month or so nobody really used it much blah blah blah … I had a PNC bank account with my wife at that time she did the exchange right away … years later I heard the banks were charging people 3% for using the coin machine that included customers too … perhaps that lady didn’t know what heck she was talking about who know but it was odd … I’m no longer a PNC bank customer anymore anymore , however my wife is a long time PNC bank customer

Understood now.  I still have my Alaskan account at Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union.  Real nice people and helpful. However, I was in WalMart some months ago and use an ATM then went up to a Bank Teller and asked for some quarters.  "Are you a customer?"  "Ah, no miss I am not."  "Sorry, can't help you."  In a tone cold as ice.  :slapfight:

At the bank branch I used four moves ago, there was a $25 upper limit on coins in the counting machine on any given day without a “vig”. If you went over $25, there was a 3% charge, for ACCOUNT HOLDERS. I’m still with the same firm, but in AL, they have no machines. On the other hand, they take unlimited rolled coins.

The problem is, people haven't been using change due to the coronavirus.  Many stores ect are requiring credit cards only, or in some cases, exact change.  When I went to the self checkout today, there was a lady saying credit cards only.  No cash.  If change isn't circulating, it's not ending up in banks.

I agree with this. I don't think it is intentionally being hoarded. Post pandemic, much of it will re-enter circulation.

I can’t tell for certain which is the cause and which is the effect. Is the behavior of people during the pandemic causing a coin shortage, or are the early misstatements about coins being an infection vector still causing specific behaviors, such as a rush to contactless card transactions? Whichever it is, it’s no longer happening where I’m stuck, err, rather, where I live. Commerce looks utterly normal - full out 2019 normal. I virtually never even THINK about masking anymore. Exception: my summer FUN trip. It was really hard to get used to wearing them again. It annoyed me as never before.

Same here. Haven't seen anything different.  Plenty of coinage so far.

I was able to deposit almost $600 in coins a few months back. And no, I never have roll hunted, not even once. I do check every coin I get naturally in change for “keepers”, though.

I think the pandemic was different down south my daughter in TN said it was not as strict. Up north where I am it was a ( paranoia pandemic ) everything closed in April 2020 only emergency workers were allowed out in public for a while. A lot of stores were closed for a long time the food stores had special hours for us old people to shop it was a pain in the you know what. So up here only cards were being used and still are mostly.

@J P Mashoke down in south it was different , my wife and I took a trip down to North Carolina my Oldest son arrived back at Camp lejeune in Jacksonville N.C , after being in Japan for a whole year we haven’t seen him all year he’s in the Marine Corps he was being awarded Sergeant E-6 rank,  he want me there to see it , I didn’t hesitate to drive down we arrived I noticed a lot of stores people wore mask but inside restaurants waiting in line nobody wore mask . inside out hotel there was no mask policy either, on the Marine base there was no policy either it was not mandated but inside buildings it was strongly suggested to wear a mask at all times until you go outside there was no “6 feet rule either” after my son’s sworn oath ceremony was over the Gunnery sergeant and Master Gunny sergeant came up to me with no mask gave me plague for my wife and me with our names on them …

Then they shook my hand like a real person would do at an important time like that they “thanked me for making a Marine” I’ve never heard that one before . People Join marine corps for discipline and honor and dignity and faithfulness that where Marines are made . Not back at home in the bedroom making babies 🤣

in Pennsylvania a hand shake was highly forbidden during Covid19

Up here in Pennsylvania mostly all restaurants were closed to take out only we had wear a mask when they did open on limited capacity we had to wear mask until we were seated and had to actually wait until we could eat then we were allowed to remove the mask and 6 feet rule was strongly mandated anyone caught breaking rules in store not wearing mask law enforcement was sometimes called to escort stubborn people out of the stores I used see all kinds of stubborn people try to fight with police when being told to leave store actually pressed down on ground and handcuffed ! Geeze was all that drama really worth it ? Simply put a mask on !!

Surely you must have heard or seen the broadcast.  If you listen closely to FDR's Pearl Harbor speech, you will hear him say not a "day" that will live in infamy, but a "date."  My wife may not have known man had been to the moon owing to where she is from (difficult as that may be to believe) but she, you and I, when asked where we were on 9/11 can state with confidence, we were there; we saw it.    😉

I'm familiar with the quote, and I've heard clips of the speech that contained the quote, but never the whole broadcast.  I'm sure it's available though if I were to go looking for it.  Looked, it is.  May have to listen to it.

Mighty Conder, just hearing from you gives me great pleasure!  And refreshes recollections I had of jumping a freight train in New York disembarking in Elkhart [to walk the two miles to Niles to claim I had "been to MI]; the 1934 jail break of Dillinger from the Lake County jail with the aid of an original wooden Colt gun whittled from a block of wood; and the 1930 speech Carl Panzram delivered on a hastily-built gallows: "Hurry up, you Hoosier ! I could kill ten [more] men while you're fooling around!" Great state; great stuff!

I love it here where I'm located also. It's a wonderful place to live. You can't beat the people here. Most of them anyways. We got a few we'd all like to run off. Most of our winters are nice. We get cold days and snow but we get alot of mild days also. It's some very beautiful country around here to. All of you all are welcome here anytime. We'd love to have ya.

Hoghead, you can bet I am coming someday. I was just talking about it yesterday. I hope we are still welcome.

We see occasional notes on small business counters (N Virginia, Maryland, DC) requesting exact change or offering to exchange bills for quarters, but there's no overall trend that I've seen. The local 7-11 type places seem to be doing a lot more transactions with credit/debit cards than a couple of years ago. Much the same for fast food joints.

This is true in NYC as well.  I sense a conspiracy afoot to cajole the public subliminally into relying more and more on plastic. One need only observe the Cheshire cat's grin on Coinbuf's face.
