Unknown gold coin 3 3

This coin was found a few years ago in the ground while digging a garden. It has been sitting in the laundry room on a shelf ever since and still looks the exact same. This is the only picture I have right now, but will get more asap. I know it is a long shot, but can anyone tell what it could possibly be by this awful picture? I will post more pics and any other information I can as soon as I can. Thank y'all again😊

That was a very cool find if it turns out being real. Not everyday you dig a gold coin up out of the garden. Probably be a good place to medal detect. May be the only one but u never know.

Although I don't have a garden, if I did and found a gold coin in it, there definitely wouldn't be any vegetables that year. My metal detector would be all over that. Lol

It LOOKS like a Liberty Type I, II, or III Double Eagle.....NO IDEA which one it is because of the excessive wear.

Sharann, do you have a digital scale (they're like $40 on Amazon) ?  Curious to see what the weight is.  Regardless of the terrible condition, it still might be worth close to 1 ounce of gold.

Of course, if a bunch of other coins are buried nearby for whatever reason, we may have a hoard.

I'd throw a metal detector in the ol' shopping cart as well. A hoard would be amazing!

That is a very cool find. I would get a metal detector and turn that place upside down.

Only thing I ever found in my garden is weeds. Be awsome to find a double eagle. I have found a couple arrowheads in it but they were broken.

While it resembles a double eagle, I've never seen one that badly damaged taken from the ground or ocean. Skip the weight and take it to a local jeweler, preferably one with a hand held XRF, and have the alloy tested to see if it is gold or merely brass. Once you know what it's made of, you can shop around for a buyer.

Finding a single double eagle in the ground is odd....People didn't carry them in their pockets. As others have mentioned, the possibility of a small hoard buried in the vicinity is real.

If it tests as gold, like they've said, tiller, metal detector, gloves, knee pads, back brace, etc... I'm glad you remembered that being up on the shelf. It's kind of exciting for all of us because it's what we've all dreamed/fantasized of, finding buried gold coins in the garden. Good luck. (Your place isn't for sale, is it?)  😁

I’m just far enough from you to be difficult. I’m in Tuscaloosa AL. I have a Sigma Metalytics tester and I metal detect. I’m happy to try and work out a way to test the coin if you can’t find someone, and would be even more happy to metal detect the area for you if it’s real. Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt?

Awe, thank you. It's kinda funny. I don't know much about any of this ( I AM learning though), but I always seem to have plenty to say about it, lol. I enjoy "listening" to y'all too, some more than others, lol. I am really having a great time just learning and trying to figure it out... All of it. That's why I am such a pain sometimes... I don't always know all the correct terminology to ask a question straight to the point so I have to go around the whole cornfield to get to the corncrib. By then, I may have either lost all my corn or somehow gained ten ears. My point being, my mind just goes so much faster than my little hands can type and I have so much to ask that it may come out to be a mess, then my question doesn't get answered because it wasn't properly asked. For that I do sincerely apologize. If ever there's something I need to clarify please let me know for both our sakes.

It would just be so much easier for me if I could see everybody face to face and you can see my hands, lol, they are very descriptive.

Thank you! You know, I have been here less than three weeks and I can see exactly what you are saying. My daughter barrel races and at one point she would cry or just be sad if she didn't do well. Well, being the Southern mom that I am, of course I told her to put in her big girl britches and get over it or we weren't doing it anymore. Well, I didn't quite stop there, but told her, of course in a real, kind mommy way 

.. "When it stops being fun, or I see you frowning or stressing about it, that is when it stops."

We have so many things to be thankful for EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. If we miss that coin at the auction, or somebody outbid us because we had to run to the bathroom, or whatever the situation, well you suck it up buttercup and realize that's part of the game and if you can't have fun while playing then don't play at all. 

I am just gonna keep it simple because I can keep my joy, that way. I probably won't ever buy a coin, but I might, but I don't have to. I am just impressed that I, yes this ole gal right here, can just hold a penny in my hand with my eyes closed and just about tell you in every single one of them which ones are before 1990,between 1990 and 2000,and 2000 and up. I think that is almost as amazing as @Just Bobrecognizing that coin with no more than that picture.

What a cool find.  About 40 years ago, I found a 1919 dime in the garden.  That's the highlight of my buried treasure finds.  Usually it's a rock.

This seems to me like a base metal reproduction that they used to put in framed displays to show what the old coins looked like.  I had one when I was a kid, had some gold and silver and copper coins, all reproductions painted gold or silver.  It was a nice display, but I would guess if I buried it the coins would look a lot like the one above.

I apologize for just posting a picture with no explanation, but I had to leave quickly, and I just got back.

As others have stated, unless the pitting of the surface was caused by the coin being all beat up, it is possible, even likely, that this is not gold.  I hope that it turns out to be real, though. Good luck.
