  1. just wondering what the qualifications would be and is the pay reasonable. I am pretty set on a career and will be done with school in 2.5 years but in case something happens would anyone recommend being a grader or other position?

Today, I graded eight rolls of AU/BU Mercury dimes, dated 1940 - 1945. That's about 400 coins. My job was to put all the AU/slider coins into one pile, put all the "Choice BU" coins into another pile, and select out only the best MS-65 FSB or better coins for pending certification.

I'll tell you what, after that, I was dizzy for the rest of the day. I literally ended up with fifteen coins, the BEST of the best, out of 400, and that's it!

Now.... imagine doing that 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year!

Not for me :) , thanks!

I knew a guy around here who worked for PCGS for awhile and all he did was grade modern proofs. Can you imagine doing that all day? Looking into those sharp mirrors while the light is burning your retina to dust. I'd have daily migraine headaches for sure...

  2. Physicsfan: yes they did. But the quarter seemed to be more excessively dipped than the others. The others are decent and market acceptable.

All of the coins Jom just posted experienced the same treatment (with the possible exception of the half dime).

    Ouch!

Interesting takes. From the Bust coinage I've seen over the past years most if not all of the nicely toned halves are pretty much all similar...at least the ones that are circulated. Many have hairlining to an extent as well.

As to the Barber half if it was dipped then it was a rather weak dip as it still has a ton of luster left...especially for an AU50.

The quarter may or may not be "acceptable" by PCGS or NGC as it's in an old ANACS holder. They graded it XF40 but I think it's more like VF35.

    Thanks!

  3. Nice coins Jom! I like them all except the quarter. (shrug)

I'm wondering what you don't like about the quarter. I value your opinion.

Jom, its kind of neat how they all have the same look. Did they all come from the same place?

Not exactly...although much of these types of coins moves through the same "dealer space" so to speak.

  4. Love the newps guys, but what happened to the etiquette of not posting images wider than around 1000-1200 pixels? Those images are ridiculous sizes!

Sorry, I never heard of this before. In the past all my images were so tiny no one

could appreciate what they were viewing.

I'm sorry if my images are too large. I just won't post anything but the smaller versions

from now on. I do most of my viewing on the Forums via my iPad and all the images seem

    ok.

Thanks for the Kudos on the new Merc's.

I usually take the coin into a photo editor and SET the width to 1200 and save that file as a small version. I also take the slab stuff out as well...it just wastes space. Bascially, I'll draw a "square" around the coin and do a CUT then I do the same with the other side and put the two sides into one file, set the width and upload. No wasted space! :D

  5. You did yourself proud, my man !

Yeah, I did myself proud by paying too much. lol

All beauties... and yes I know you thought I

owned all the Barbers out there in the market place

at one time or the other, but, believe me, I never owned

    that Half !! :D

You own all high end AU Barbers. I figured as much years ago because you could never find any nice ones. YOU had them all...don't deny it!

I especially like the Dimes as well... and my meager CBD

set is missing a nice 1837 - what is the grade of your's ?

My set is 53-58 and I am only doing a date set - no varieties.

    The seated Dime is :cloud9:

The 1837 Dime is graded AU55 by NGC and, IMO, not much better than AU53 really. It's nice but I was able to get the price down so it's not a big deal.

I'm doing the same with Dimes as you. I've got a 21, 27, 28, a newp 33 I don't have a photo of yet, this 37 and a 36. I don't do varieties either....which means we are competing....and because of the latter it also means I'm in trouble. lol

The Seated Dime...well...it isn't a Dime at all. Look again! It's a Half Dime. AU55...very pretty though.

This one is really nice for a 63. Plus, believe it or not, the date is a bit better too. 10-D are more common for example. I used to say if some of the Philly dates (10P, 14P come to mind) "had mintmarks" with the same rarity they'd be a whole lot more expensive. (does this make any sense? lol )

    Nice one.
