Interesting that there are that many varieties for the 1939 nickel.  Hopefully you learn something new every day.

I also use USA Coin Book to as a quick reference, with the Red Book as the source.  So far, they have been close, with maybe USA CB just missing a few varieties.  The interesting thing is that the RB also only has one per mint plus the DDR for the 1939 nickel, and you have to go to say CoinFacts to see all the varieties.  Maybe not considered significant by the RB, although that would be strange.

Well thank you for backing me up, kind sir! That big meanie @VKurtB was gonna gang up on me, and you cut him off at the pass!

All joking aside, i find usacoinbook to be very valuable for any sort of quick look up. Mintage, whatever. And they do list the very prevalent varieties. A filled S, stuff like that. So it works for me, and that's all i can ask for.

The two types of reverses are from all three mints. In Philly, the majority are Reverse of 1940; in Denver, they’re roughly equal; in San Fran, the majority are Reverse of 1938. But both reverses do exist in all three mints.

I looked it up on variety vista, i can't even see what they're pointing out on a legit example, let alone this munged up circulation find i got. Me peepers isn't so young, ya know? I'll wait and see what younger eyes have to say, later on. Thank you though. I use usacoinbook to look up everything, so if it's not listed there, i figure it doesn't exist. Who knew?

Hello. I see nothing to indicate any errors on this coin. This nickel has seen heavy circulation and has accrued a few bumps and bruises along the way. The voids on the obverse could suggest this coin was plucked from the ground at some point, cleaned up and put back into circulation or took some heavy shots in that area. The mintmark looks to have taken a hit and displaced the metal. This coin lived a hard life and what exactly happened to it is hard to say. Everything you see is most likely PMD (Post Mint Damage). No value over face.

    Ditto

Face it. CoinTalk exists for one and only one reason - to glorify the opinions of the owner and moderator staff. Period. Have any of them accomplished anything in this hobby? Any awards? Do they exhibit? Do they judge exhibits? Have they won any numismatic service awards? Do they publish? Numismatic Literary Guild Awards? A Clemy?

The answers are no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and no. But they have banned numerous people who have done those things.

Seems like none of those things are necessary to have an amazing coin website. Crazy, huh? Being a recently banned member, i for one can say, the site is very friendly, and ideal for people new to coins. There are actually very few people with attitudes over there, compared to here. I find over here it's more combative, people thinking you need to win a Clemy (wtf is that?) to be worthy of anything. So, you may actually have a fun time over there, rather than here. I seem to have just recently brought any fun here, over from there.

That being said, best of luck in your journey @EagleRJO. Not you @VKurtB, we all know about your "journey". I mean, in general.

[ @VKurtB:  Oscular? I have already yielded to @CoinJockey73 to whom I have bequeathed my former title, Master Wordsmith. Nice try!]

And as everyone knows, oscular means, anything having to do with Oscar, so, any Oscars in the house?

    Edit*

Example, friend 1 says, did you see how smashed Oscar was the other night?

Friend 2, absolutely, it was so Oscular!

Question: If you went to a bank and bought a box of rolled nickels, ($100 I think) and checked the dates of all the coins, which date, FOR WHERE YOU LIVE, would be less likely to be in there, 1939(P) or 2009P? How about 2009D?

Hmmmm, taxing, quite taxing. I don't know much about nickels, or coin rolls, but i know nickels, and i see 1939P nickels all day. I probably see those other ones, but who cares about anything that modern that doesn't have an S or a W, am i right? @Dano1969, sorry to call you out, but how many 1939P nickels did i send you, do you happen to know?

Edit* i kind of know about the low mintage 2009 nickels because of the financial thingy that happened. But i don't look for them. Guess i should start

1939(P) is a VERY interesting nickel. I gave an ANA Money Talk on the nickels of 1939. And it just BARELY touched on the D and S coins. About 3/4 of the time dealt with the (P).

I've found 2 ddr, if that's what you're referring to. Two legit ddr, found in the wild. THAT i do find interesting. I've also found three large S 1941 nickels. Very hard to find. So yes, while I'm a (m)boron, I am barely enlightened enough to know to google something that looks suspicious, or interesting and kind of remember it. But those are really my limits. I see how expensive these draped bust half caff lattes cost. Way too rich for my white trash blood, thank you very much. And thank you @VKurtB for being a friendly nemesis, sorry, arch nemesis. There's no reason we can't be friendly to each other, while being on completely different ends of the spectrum, on literally everything. Except being giving with coins. Yay!

Literally thousands of them. But also, based on WHAT have you decided that non mint mark coins are something less? You have weird standards my man. Cripes, dude, for west coasters, non mint marked coins are “exotic”.

Well, it certainly warms the cockles of my heart to hear we're at least on that exact same page, numismatically.

I see the non mint mark nickels ad nauseum. There's nothing special about them. In my book! All you nickel lovers out there, i come in peace! I send out every nickel from '46 on both P and D, to '59 P and D. I send out all 1939P, '40P, and '41P. I keep the all the 1938 i find just because they're cool. I've only found 20 of those. But i send out pounds of stuff. Glad we agree on that, at least. Even though you're my arch nemesis, remember, most enemies are also deep deep friends, so, i still luv ya, pal. I hope you'll keep coming back and bust my chops. Stay safe tonight, brother.

P.s. if anyone out west wants old tyme nickels from above dates and mint marks, let me know. Heavily circulated.

  10. In a rare display of "no nickels", it got me thinking. I actually found about 10 nickels today, but i don't post pics of anything with no mint mark. So i found about four 1941, couple '47, '52, stuff like that. But it's not picture worthy, so i just stuff it in an envelope to send out to a YN, or to a boy scout troop to help get that merit badge. I've literally sent out pounds of coins to total strangers. Not dollars, pounds. Hey @VKurtB you said you were the anti-me as far as numismatics. With you sitting on that literal ton of coins, how many have you sent out, for free, wanting nothing in return to anyone? Just curious.
