ASE Newbie Question
J P M replied to LDH Coins & Memorabilia's topic in Newbie Coin Collecting Questions
I have all my coins insured. The graded coins and raw ASE, on my insurance I even have mint sets and proof sets included. -
The last place I worked at before I retired had around 100 employees. I got all of the electrical apprentice's from the technical school and all the walk in's off the street. The word was if you could keep up with the old man you could stay. Most could not. The cell phone was a big issue.

1961 NMM Nickel - MS5FS???
J P M replied to funnylady444's topic in Newbie Coin Collecting Questions
I agree with Kurt. You may think he is being hard on you but only if you do not want to hear the truth. I see people advertise 4 steps all the time and there are even stickers for 4 steps but all the stickers in the world will not change the coin to a collectable FS . -

You do have a couple 82 SD but they look like zinc coins not copper.

We we may never know for sure. I do have some NGC graded PL nickels. I don't send in coins for grading unless the coin is worth 3 times the grading fee. I agree it is hard to see the proof like on this coin with a straight on shot. I am not sure what NGC does for a test but I was told years ago when I was younger. If you could see a number 2 pencil reflection in the coin it was proof like. Just old school coin collecting. I am not sure if old school is cool anymore ?

Colored or painted new coins
J P M replied to Mel_in_PNW's topic in Newbie Coin Collecting Questions
I don't know of anyone who can get a dealer to give you a ASE for spot price. I have always had to pay more. Not a lot more most of the time $3 to 5 over, some dates a bit more. I was not buying a monster box only buying single date coins also. -

The pencil behind ABE's ear die crack-
J P M replied to Lee Coen's topic in Newbie Coin Collecting Questions
Welcome , What you have there looks more like plating blisters from the thin copper plating on top of a zinc core cent. A spike head is a coin that has a die crack from the rim toward the center of the coin. Like this -

Yes, Very well done Roger. It is quite a honor. -
My coin man Steve also said he picked up some new inventory he had not priced out yet .He cracks me up, He pulls out a 12 by 12 box with 8 plastic 20 coin holders full of MS Morgan's. I was pressed for time but there were some outstanding looking coins in those containers MS63 to MS66. I can't wait to see how he prices them out.

I took the last two out of the 2X2 to get some better shots. It looks like these coins have been in the 2X2 for to long. The 70S looks foggy . Another thing I can see is hanging around in a box of coins all with 2X2 staples is not a good idea. Almost all the small rounded marks look to be from other holders hitting each other.

Hi All , I was at one of my antique coin stores today . I was looking through a box of BU Nickels for my book when I saw these 1970 D and 1970 S uncirculated coins. For a buck I said what the heck. To me the last two look MS 66 PL. Does anyone else think so ?

Once Red-Hot....Now, They're Not: Fallen Stars
J P M replied to GoldFinger1969's topic in US, World, and Ancient Coins
I love the input this thread is generating. Others can please correct me if I am off base here but I have always put US coinage into 4 groups. Colonial 1792 - 1860, Civil War. 1861-1865, Classic/Silver 1866-1964 and Modern/Clad 1965 to present. I do have to ask WC when referring to US coinage as modern why the 1933-1964 date.
