I thank you again. I know you know a penny when you see one LoL. and a XF40 is not a bad grade for one of these old catalog coin holders. I will put it in with the old mint sets I have

Me either I paid $50 already in the slab it just lists for $70 not that it is worth that

A graded coin will be more likely to bring in a higher price and also hold it, This 2011 is a NGC Top Pop it is worth $70 the price did not go down on the slab coin when the price of silver dropped. The one below it was hand picked by me at a coin shop it is the same year mint and quality and I think it is worth $35 to $45 now with the price drop.

I think it depends on the coin, I have some MS coins AU and VF and G and they have been graded by myself and other collectors not a TPG service. I have old proof coins in sets that are hazy so they are not PF70 unless they can be restored . I have a few proof coins in boxes that I would have to say look 70 but I can't call them that because they are not really graded buy a TPG service. I have slab coins that I think are graded to high and I have some that I think are graded to low. Grading a coin is more a opinion by someone who has experience and then it is still only one opinion. Just my opinion on the whole grading thing.

Well it's not junk, but not worth a lot of money just fun stuff CHEEP I got this set for $8 only because I liked the toned dimes in it .and a shiny looking 1943 steel but still one coin is all it takes to get my money back and the toned coins look cool.

Thank you for the grading tips, The front is nice and it does have a bit of luster on the bust but the field is mat on the reverse and the wheat lines on the left are untouched but the one on the right is just starting to merge and we also have a small die crack on that wheat stalk

I shop at a lot of antique stores and buy the old junk mint sets that are cheap. Sometimes you can get lucky and find one coin in the set that will pan out. I'm not finding big money coins but Break even or maybe a little extra value. In reality it is only worth what someone will pay you for it in the end.

Thanks Coinbuf I know you have a real nice set of LMS. It is hard to get a good photo through the scratched up plastic. So are there to many marks on the letters holding it back from AU.

I picked up 1909 VDB it is in The American Historic Society Holder it is in very good shape a nice strike with some bag marks on the high spots like the ear and cheek and minor scratches on some of the letters in the back . But no marks in the fields or rim. Most of these production sets take used coins to make up the sets but this 1909 VDB is really nice. I was wondering if it would pass for.

Gold always works in my book and old coins. I have my full set of BS ASE from 1986 to 2021 two proofs and one 2021 BS type 2 just because. Now some years of the ASE's are worth more than others but when it comes down to selling a ASE I bet any dealer would only want to pay you the current flat rate all around. I paid a little more for some years than others. So are they really worth more? or just on paper they are worth more

All metal is down now so I would not sell anything and 2021 is a crazy year for coins . Way to many coins this year I bet they will cancel each other out Value wise for many years to come. Just my opinion. How many coins in a monster box anyway?

I found some old mint sets at one of my antique stores today. I think I got a good deal all three for $20 and the 1909 VDB is worth close to that ?

Thanks for the link Hinkle. and yes it is a cool coin, I am still waiting to see if someone else will look at the post I made in Ask NGC. I was doing a search and found out that David Camire is not only the big cheese when it comes to coin errors but he is also one of the presidents of NGC. So he is probably a bit busy to be looking at a forum request to look at a penny. But you never know

I find it easier to just not buy a Peace dollar I own two and they were both given to me. Almost every one has a week strike and most of the raw ones you find have been cleaned with a Brillo pad I never liked them as much as Morgan's or other Dollar coins.

I hope so I have put aside 2 rolls of newer random dates of FS nickels and FB dimes I have found while cherry picking. I also save all the 2017 P pennies I find, maybe they all will be worth more down the line.

Wow.... I think I found a good example of Machine Doubling going through some old pennies this weekend.

The reason I asked about the toning is I have seen the black foam rubber band inside the coin holder may have a factor in toning some coins? I have noticed coloration on a lot of coins in these type of holders. Not sure if it is the rubber giving off some kind of reaction inside the case. Just a observation and I wanted to pass it on in hopes others may have a thought or have also observed this toning themselves.
