    Hi Sharann,

Both of your cents are indeed Large Dates.  I don't think we've talked before.....you were probably active here during my long hiatus, but it's always good when a member in good standing returns, and judging by the replies of others, you certainly fit the bill.  Welcome back :)

I hit the same wrong button when I replied to you as I did when replying to Alex in PA. I am so sorry it seemed as though I was not responding. I made lots of good friends here and am glad to be back. Nice to meet you and look forward to chatting with you 🙂

Good to hear from you again.  Welcome back.  :hi:

Thank you! It has been so long since I'd commented, I'd almost forgotten how to reply, lol. I sent you a reply yesterday (or thought I sent it) , but didn't see it today and was quite confused... I don't have time to reply the long one from yesterday, but it is good to be back and hear from you as well!

I have shown this chart before but will show it again.

Copy this and you will know at a glance what to look for.

As you can see, there are only 4 different years you have to look for.

Thank you for this chart! Very handy for this ole girl! (thumbsu

  4. Hey y'all!! It has been a hot minute since I have been here. I have really missed y'all though. I am glad to have a few minutes to take a break from work. Being the overthinker I am, I am doubting myself, so I am asking my expert friends... There are two different coins, both 1970S. I have looked at them so much that everything is a blur. I know the pics are not the best, but hopefully you can tell if they are both large dates.

Thank you and I hope everyone has been doing great! I have missed all of you and hopefully work will slow down after Christmas and I can be more involved again.

Today’s haul. I ran across an older collector that has truly boggled my mind. He is more of a coin hoarder than anything. Anyway he showed me some of his stuff today, and I was able to talk him into selling me a few. I got these mercs, a few raw early Jefferson’s with full steps he let me cherry pick, a 16 and 17 raw mercs with full bands, and a couple buffalos in great condition but common years. I paid up today and probably paid him more than he was expecting, but I wanted to be fair to him and show good faith to see the rest of it. When I left he said give him a week to round things up and get some stuff out of the safety deposit box and I could come back. He also has boxes and boxes of BU rolls from the 30s-60s I am dying to get a better look at. As coinbuf told me, you run into some interesting people in this hobby (good interesting). And it scares me when I see stuff like his because it makes you wonder what’s out there. What is stuck in these old timer collectors boxes? What is rare may one day not be rare. Someone somewhere may have rolls of them stuffed away.

Congratulations!! I'd love to run into someone like that. Maybe one day!

I love it here where I'm located also. It's a wonderful place to live. You can't beat the people here. Most of them anyways. We got a few we'd all like to run off. Most of our winters are nice. We get cold days and snow but we get alot of mild days also. It's some very beautiful country around here to. All of you all are welcome here anytime. We'd love to have ya.

Hoghead, you can bet I am coming someday. I was just talking about it yesterday. I hope we are still welcome.

  7. My 2c - -

I, personally, just took his post to be directed at people who come here trolling and wasting everyone's time. Which is essentially what he was doing in his own fancy QA way.  As well as telling them what they are told each and every time they do such... Send it in if you want, but it is gonna cost you and the coin isn't gonna be worth anymore just because it is slabbed.

That was my take on it, but that is just my 2c. I am super happy that, in my absence, things haven't changed. 😉 I love being a part of a "family" whose members have such diverse thoughts. It can only make one wiser.

Lots of scratches and dings due to circulation. The key is understanding the minting and die making process and knowing that your coin could not have left the mint looking like that.  Coins are struck with tons of force that cause the metal to flow.  This gets rid of nearly all the marks left on the planchet. Also, the marks are recessed on the coin, which means the would have to be raised if the were on the die.  That won't happen on a die.  Even if the die breaks or chips during product ion, it won't look like your coin.

Here is a video from the mint.  Learning about the minting process takes time but is well worth it if you want to identify error coins

You explained this in a way anyone could understand the process. I have read and been told by several people and I know now, but this was a great explanation. Kudos!

Had this coin and looks like this coin was struck to different denominations or foreign denominations, the obverse has a die cracked and reverse side, may l ask if this coin gonna be worth it for grading? I might be wrong so may l ask if there's anything I need to learn from this coin.

    thanks!

I'm sorry, my forum friends , I got to this one before any of you did. I know you are disappointed.

Yes! It is surely worth sending in to be graded IF it is a 2015 5 cents struck on a foreign planchet and you are wanting to pay for it. But you should most definitely verify your details beforehand.

Some nice coin additions @Sharann, I would caution you not to love the look of that 1917 too much or to buy coins with that look.   That staining would not be considered as attractive by very many and it has active corrosion/verdigris.    The 1920 woody and 1931-S are both attractive coins, find more of those.  :golfclap:

Thank you and thanks for the heads up 😊. Luckily, I didn't pay up for the 17.😉
