I don't think most of them start out as trolls. I think you (plural, referring to a subset of the regulars in general) create them.

It's the same thing every time. Someone posts something that is either stupid or annoying. They get heckled; sometimes they deserve it, and sometimes people are just being Richards (they know who they are). Pretty soon it's evident to the poster:

    1. Their name is mud here. They're burned, done, hosed, marked lousy. They will not recover.
    2. This forum is full of people who just cannot shut the f-bomb up, and who just have to respond to people who are not worth wasting time on.
    3. Due to the above two realities, the only benefit the poster can get is the childish one of taunting and trolling just to manipulate people and watch them lose their bodily wastes. Its maturity level is about first grade, but the first-grade mentality gets a huge rod on from making old men harrumph and grouse and get their BP up. They are the kids (including adult kids who never grew up) who stick a foot on the old paternally_uncertain_person's lawn because they know he will rush right out there and yell at them. That mentality will not grow up.

At that point, a troll has been created, and the troll will troll until they get bored with it for a while. Sometimes they'll leave off for a while, then come back and manipulate the members some more. I'm not saying that the troll didn't necessarily deserve their initial mockery; sometimes they do. I'm not saying that the responses their trolling draws are unjustified; they nearly always are.Mohawk about thqt I am saying that trolls perish when not fed, and this forum is a free feeding ground for them because people simply cannot resist dignifying the trolls' stoopidness.

All it takes to be rid of them is the ability not to bother with them. But that will never happen here. While there are people here with poor impulse control, there are only a few that are too mentally deficient to recognize trolls, and those actually work to the forum's benefit because they at least give the troll some lousy advice (we need more of that). The rest--this is generally not a hobby for mental defectives, though they do appear--are sharp enough to know it's a troll, but simply can't refuse to be baited. And they won't change. So that's that. We won't change it, but we can at least take responsibility where suitable.

This is the first time I've posted here in over six months (and it likely will be the last time for the foreseeable future), because I just wanted to give full props to JKK for an absolutely perfect post.

This is a remarkably hostile place, with too many people who never got over being middle-school bullies.  It's just not fun to hang out here (ask Mohawk about that...).  Most of you are fine, but there are enough people who are consistently unpleasant that one is quickly put to the choice of being a troll, or going elsewhere.  I went elsewhere; Mohawk went elsewhere; I'm sure lots of others have gone elsewhere.  But you who somehow get your kicks by being nasty (it takes a particularly type of warped human to get off on being anonymously nasty to people you'll never meet) make this a very unpleasant place to hang out.

It's NGC's choice to coddle such people (and the choice of the rest of you to put up with it, instead of calling them out).  It's the choice of the rest of us to spend our time (and certification money) elsewhere.  I'm gone again; but I wanted to put an exclamation point on JWW's fine post.

Read the other responses above here. You’re the only one here with malignancy issues.

You keep telling yourself that.  You're the one who gratuitously demonized someone in your first post.  I merely pointed out the inappropriateness of much of your post.

If others here like having someone who makes malignant posts, that's not a reflection on me.

I'll leave this sorry thread alone, and let you mud-wrestle by yourself....

I write honestly about my thoughts and opinions. Just wait to see what I write later about YOU! LOL! It won't be good, promise.

Lest you stay up nights worrying, I want to reassure you that it never once occurred to me that your malignant maunderings are anything but your "honest thoughts and opinions."

Both my wife and I are pretty hobbled physically, so we made a short visit to the Tennessee State Numismatic Assn. show in East Ridge, TN, which is literally a few hundred yards from the Georgia border off I-75, on the eastern ridge of Chattanooga. Hence the name. We drove up after her PT appt on Friday, and after my discharge late Wednesday, so we didn’t have the smoke for a long visit. I drove the whole way with barely touching the pedals - 99% cruise control management.

We arrived at our lodging just after the show closed for Friday, so we rested up a bit and then grabbed a bite at DosBros Fresh Mexican Grille, across the parking lot. The Colonel, Past ANA Prezzy, Steve Ellsworth, had picked the same dining spot. I offered a polite wave, but he and I have locked horns more than a little bit over the last two and a half years over internal ANA policy issues. My wife really hates the guy’s guts and would probably like to see him dead. He insults the Marine Corps repeatedly. Both my in-laws were Marines. I appreciate his numismatic specialty. That’ll have to be enough. I choose to see him in the light of an EX-Pres. Everyone brings joy; some when they leave.

After a good sleep, we hit the show floor with less vigor than I had planned on. I did some shopping (hint: I left without purchasing a single U.S. coin - NADA!). I found some gorgeous Soviet commemorative roubles for the completion of my son’s set of them. Then I landed some British pieces for my sets, and one will hopefully put me in the running to get #1 on my first posted Registry Set. As a bonus, my name was drawn for the Saturday 11am door prize. There is a newly discovered variety on a modern proof set, so I snagged that year as my prize. We’ll see what happens.

A few more British coins, a bracelet from F.U.N. Prez Bob Hurst’s wife’s material, a new 7x triplet loupe (note @Quintus Arrius, I moved DOWN in magnification from 10x), and an impulse purchase, a nice high grade NGC slabbed tombac wartime Canadian 5-cent piece, with the V reverse. And our stamina was wearing thin. Then our electronic alarm on our phones showed us we had packages on the porch, and showed our semi-feral fur buddy was looking for grub, so we headed back to Arab, AL, an hour and a few minutes drive.

Observation - black boxes with 2021 Morgans and Peace dollars were thick as flies EVERYWHERE, literally thousands on the bourse floor. And prices were falling faster than you-know-whose approval rating. (Watch the Sunday morning talking head shows.) These new tribute dollars are going to be a HORRIBLE market bust folks. It is RAPIDLY becoming a buyer’s market, with the POSSIBLE exception of the CC privy. Fewer of those were sitting around gathering dust and no interest. It was too early for graded ones to be on display, but the black boxes were EVERYWHERE.

Barney, our cute little bobtail semi-feral kitty, greeted us as we arrived home. He ate well.

Not bad--in one post, you (i) mercilessly bashed some poor guy you dislike (is it really so hard not to do that?), (ii) injected politics into where it doesn't belong (is it really that hard not to do that?), and (iii) even managed to tell a story relevant to the group.

Nice GSA 83CC. Better’n either of mine.

Thanks!  I was lucky; it was buried in the website, so the retailer may well not have known they had it (the front page showed "out of stock," but another route in showed it there), and had not updated the price (I told them about the glitch, but they happily sold me the coin, and updated the prices of the other coins that had been hidden).  I've learned that you win some, and you lose some; I can celebrate the wins!

  6. It's a beautiful coin!

I'm a professional, but not in a profession having anything to do with numismatics.  :)

My amateur guess:  Comparing it to my graded Morgans, it most closely resembles (both sides) an AU55 that I have.  But I cannot tell whether the apparent softness in the lower part of the hair is in the strike (meaning it's uncirculated), or from a tiny bit of wear.

  7. I would add, in support of what you've been told, that I'll be selling my extras sooner rather than later, because I feel that the price will continue to drop for a while.  It might spike up again if they are annoying enough to continue the "series" next year, but my sense is that (i) prices have dropped significantly since we actually got the coins, and (ii) MS 69 is not a "special" grade, worthy of paying twice the release price.  If you care about "top pop," perhaps an MS 70 set would be worth that, but not (IMO, of course) an MS 69 set.

Absolutely unneeded. I lose a lot of respect for members who keep pushing political buttons and I wouldn't be surprised if others feel the same way.  IMO, posts like this are no better than the trolls.  But some people are compelled to get the last word.  And on, and on it goes until somebody gets banned.  And I hope that happens if this continues

You're right.  Sorry for rising to the bait.

46 has faaaaaaaaaaaar surpassed 45 on lying, dividing, and race hustling, in particular.

Uh huh; you need to get your "information" from somewhere other than Breitbart.

    And about that coup attempt....

Yes Spidey, we are all well familiar with your views. Mine are 180 degrees opposite.

    Who knew?

Some of us don't like a president who lies, cheats, steals, divides, philanders, mocks, throws out racist dog-whistles, alienates our allies and cozies up to our enemies, and attempts a violent coup against our democracy.  Some do.  Go figure.

#46 evokes the same response in me. Worst EVER, and that includes 45.

Yeah, Kurt; I understand your feeling.  I would hate a president, too, if all he did was lie, cheat, steal, divide, philander, mock, throw out racist dog-whistles, alienate our allies and cozy up to our enemies, and attempt a violent coup against our democracy.  Oh, wait, that was 45, not 46; my bad.
