I know some non-collectors who bought gold/silver coins as presents and liked having it graded and in a holder.  The recipients also liked it that way, too.

TPG's have been continuously evolving and finding new ways to convince both dealers and collectors to submit and resubmit coins.   As long as they continue to move the goal posts and the mint continues to crank out useless modern junk in volume the TPG's will be set for many decades to come.

You've got to love the good ole days:
Dr. George W. Massamore, Jr., is a fascinating personality : Confederate soldier, politician, musician, dentist, optician, fish and game warden, dog breeder, baseball team owner, philatelist, numismatist, coin and stamp auction cataloger, coin and stamp dealer, autograph, and Indian relic collector, and author. In his fifty-six years he accomplished much as an active citizen and hobbyist.
You've got to love that "butcher, baker, and candlestick maker" mentality!

The Treasurer of the US, not the Sec of Treasury.
Individual mints had complained about having to fill orders for single coins from individuals and the time it took to send replies, wait for payment, then mail the coins via registered, etc. The problem became worse when new silver designs were introduced in 1892 and then even worse with Lincoln cents, Buffalo nickels, etc. The Philadelphia Mint had staff to handle medal and proof coin orders, but not circulated coins for individuals. The other mints had no facilities, so the work had to take time from other duties of clerks. The eventual solution was for the Treasurer of the US to be sent a supply of coins from each mint, and then fill orders. The Treasurer had staff to handle cash and operating the Cash Room at Main Treasury in Washington. (The Treasurers had already been quietly giving out gold $1 and $3 to VIPs visitors and members of Congress....See RAC 1909-1915 for details...These were used by wives, daughters and girlfriends for jewelry.)

I think they got like 7% or so.  I didn't follow the court case(s), but I am sure it's different than if a stolen or lost item suddenly turns up.  In this case, the gold was found but big $$$ were expended in bringing it up.  And the insurance company didn't foot that bill.

My thoughts exactly. Im not gonna pay an extra $50 or so, however much it is, for someones autograph or signature. Espically on bullion.

Only from people who collect signatures or who HAVE to have every label variation.  I collect coins, not signatures.

There is a small, but determined, group of folks who have started collecting slabs and don't care too much about the coin.  The older the slab the better.

It is a Gen 1.2 used from 1986 to 1989, commonly referred to as a "rattler" because the coins were slightly loose in the holder and will rattle if you shake it.   As a broad blanket statement coins from the rattler timeframe can be graded conservatively, I would say from your photos that this coin has a decent chance to get a + upgrade today, I think a full point grade bump is less likely.   I will say that this generation of holder has yielded quite a few gold CAC beans.
A great many of the coins still in these rattler holders are there because, like your coin, they are very common dates and the cost to try for an upgrade usually costs more than the coin is worth if it upgrades.   Dealers love these because they can hype the under graded lore and many times get close to the next grade money without spending the money to actually try for the upgrade.   While this holder was not very popular with dealers and collectors back in the day I rather like them and I have quite a few coins in this generation holder in my old holder custom set.

Don't put all your eggs in any one price guide basket.  The price guides out there are just a guide for me.  Like GoldFinger said, look at recent auctions.  I look at recent sales on eBay for fair market values.

Is your primary focus the pricing differential between NGC and PCGS....or whether either or both are up-to-speed with current market values ?  Those are separate issues.
I find the online pricing guide/chart useful for the TREND going back months or years....but not for the recent past or current market value.  For that, I go to recent auctions at HA or GC.
Those are recent...real-time...and reflect true market outcomes often with multiple bidders on multiple items of the same grade.

Thought I would share this also. Really cool and interesting find. The die crack doesn't come from the rim, but cool enough to make the track look broken. Why I like the die cracks from rim, is because I'm looking for a rim to rim die crack. I feel those are fun to look at. If I keep hunting I'll find one for my collection.

I heard from an unreliable source that the active dealers block off the restrooms and negotiate from stall to stall transactions. It also give them a convenient place to scrub, dip and launder coins. The source was sitting at the same dinner table and was absolutely unpeckable.

Color does not look natural, at least in the photos. Doesn't mean it's not a rare or interesting coin, just means the surface does look altered. Sounds to me like NGC got it right.

NGC knows copper. If they think the color is altered, it probably is. The ONLY shot you have realistically is to crack it out of the holder and submit it again raw and take your chances.
