Popular Post Hoghead515
Can anyone tell me what generation holder this is? USMC Ray gifted this to me about a year or so ago. I really like this coin. It isnt beat up very bad with contact marks. I really miss old Ray. He was a good person . Hope he is well. I enjoyed talking to him. But back on topic. This holder is very small and thin. I was actually wondering where on a timeline where this generation fell. Also how conservative were coins graded in the time this was certified? Hoghead515
Looks like rim dings on the coin but its not. Theres 3 little spots on the plastic all at the edge of the coin. Looks like where the slab was fused together or something. Not really sure what it is but its in the plastic. Just the angle I took the pic is bending the light or something of that nature giving it that anomally. Popular Post GoldFinger1969
Hog, it looks like Gen 2.1 from 1989. Doing more checking but this looks like a dead match. https://www.pcgs.com/holdermuseum Edited March 24, 2022 by GoldFinger1969 Coinbuf, Hoghead515 and tj96 2
Popular Post Coinbuf
It is a Gen 1.2 used from 1986 to 1989, commonly referred to as a "rattler" because the coins were slightly loose in the holder and will rattle if you shake it. As a broad blanket statement coins from the rattler timeframe can be graded conservatively, I would say from your photos that this coin has a decent chance to get a + upgrade today, I think a full point grade bump is less likely. I will say that this generation of holder has yielded quite a few gold CAC beans. A great many of the coins still in these rattler holders are there because, like your coin, they are very common dates and the cost to try for an upgrade usually costs more than the coin is worth if it upgrades. Dealers love these because they can hype the under graded lore and many times get close to the next grade money without spending the money to actually try for the upgrade. While this holder was not very popular with dealers and collectors back in the day I rather like them and I have quite a few coins in this generation holder in my old holder custom set. The Neophyte Numismatist
Very nice coin.. I think you could CAC that one if you didn't want to try for the upgrade. zadok
...coin is worth more in the "rattler" holder than if in a new pcgs holder unless it would upgrade to a 66, doubtful...agree coin is a good candidate to CAC which also would increase its value 30%+... Hoghead515
Thank you all. Ill probably never try to get an upgrade. I really like it in the older holder. Prob just leave it as is. Been in there for around 30 years so it deserves to stay there. I may try for a bean one of these days. It also came from my friend like that so ill keep it like that. Its gonna stay in my collection for as long as Im alive so Im very happy of how it is. And glad to have a rattler in my collection. A little piece of history itself. I may have mistyped, the label's color doesn't match up with 2.1. It matches closer with 1.2 (1986-89). The color of his label is tough to see if it's faded light green or white. Cost of a 1-point upgrade not worth doing for many sub-$100 coins I bet. Hoghead515

There is a small, but determined, group of folks who have started collecting slabs and don't care too much about the coin. The older the slab the better. Don't put a lot of faith in label color, the colors weren't stable until their generation 3.1 The generation 3.0 is best known for the unstable color. Labels can be white, several shades of yellow, several of green and all the way through sky blue depending on whether the yellow or blue dye was breaking down, or both. At one time I had over a dozen different "colors" of labels for that generation holder. Hoghead515 and GoldFinger1969 1
