zadok reacted to Coinbuf in CACG has arrived. Loudly knocking. Will NGC and PCGS answer the door? Do you think NGC and PCGS will counter CACG and their "premium certification" services with their own new services or certifications?
There have always been and are today sellers that attempt to deceive buyers that may not be informed; be it coins or vacum cleaners.   TPG's have helped to level the playing field at first.  But for whatever the reason TPG grading has changed from when they started.  CACG  is simply resetting back to the earlier standards.   So I see is as CACG is a return to the consistency that TPG'S had at inception.   Now will the marketplace like that is the question.

... I do not think I can be a part of anything that sees nothing wrong with this ... if there is any truth to this whatever, it bodes ill for the hobby, ten and twenty years hence ...
(Reminiscent of the 2001 movie, "Training Day," where Denzel Washington turns to Ethan Hawke, and says, in substance, Forget about everything you learned in the police academy.)
This is one of the reasons why prices I saw in the Red and Blue Books, various newspapers and sheets, as I discovered early on, had no bearing in New York City.  From the 1960's on, the city's dealers always marched to the beat of a different drummer.  One of the questions assiduously avoided on the Forum is:  "What do you reasonably hope to get for the coin you bought when it comes time to sell?"
Fortunately, the inexorable rise in gold has effectively wiped out whatever mistakes I made or misgivings I may have had in compiling one of the finer collections of certified, century-old, French gold coins.  🐓

zadok reacted to powermad5000 in I am buying this coin convince me not too. I am high bidder and will bid up to $1200.00 My current winning bid is less than half of $1200.00 36hrs till hard close. My assigned grade is private but it's pretty high grade. Mistake? Steal? Break even? lol
Mike, I absolutely will not buy coins from this seller. I do believe they called themselves Canyon City Coin before the name change. All of their photos are incredibly juiced just like Auction Kings photos which look the same as these. All of their offerings have that black background with a cameo looking contrast. I can guarantee the coin in hand will not look like it does in the photos.
I located this coin in seconds on an eBay search. Here's the deal. It is listed as 1878 ULTRA DMPL * PRISTINE+ GEM BU. My rule of thumb, the more descriptors used, the more full of BS the listing is. The coin should speak for itself. Here is the other thing. After taking a quick one minute look at the NGC census, there are ZERO graded in DPL, and only 5 graded in PL. The pictured coin is not a proof. It does not have the same sharpness in the hair, or shields on the obverse and reverse to be a proof so you would be buying a non proof with questionable marking or scratches that could be in the blacked out fields and I seriously doubt that the coin in hand would actually have that contrast to get it a PL grade (forget DPL as there are none graded at that designation). So the sellers description is deceiving to begin with. While the overall details seem to put the coin in uncirculated territory, if it is cleaned, think UNC Details and the commensurate discount the coin would end up selling for. An unimpaired MS 60 is listed in the price guide for $400. Your coin in UNC Details would end up selling for low AU or XF pricing if it is graded details so figure around $150-$200 in that case. And you would be out the cost to have it graded. I would only risk the $200 to cover my you know what in worst case scenario, so that is my opinion. If you can, stop bidding and let someone else get it and let it be their problem.
And that is why I buy nothing from that seller.

Absolutely nothing is lost if we treat others the way we wish to be treated.  The manner in which you are treated does not matter.  Set your standard high, and keep your counsel.

...there r just certain things u dont buy from photographs...diamonds, oriental rugs, paintings, certain high grade coins, exotic women...the proof is in the pudding, seeing n touching can not be artificially duplicated, at least not yet...same with empirically grading coins from a scan, just not something our current technology can do....

Comeback:  I was made aware only recently that NGC's submissions are made in one office, unlike PCGS.  I happen to agree with you; if I did not, I would not have had the unmitigated gall of weighing in.  (In the absence of emojis depicting lying prostrate or genuflection, I give you this:   )

Nuffing wrong with that ! I’d rather be surrounded by bunch law abiding concealed carry gun owners,  than to be in a show with only couple of security or cops walking around … shows are not Federal buildings 🤷‍♂️ which you should have right exercise your conceal carry rights … at the gun show while everyone handguns were being unloaded as per the police officer at the door , if you were to go into the bathroom look at garbage can full of cut off zip ties 😂 guys/gals just loaded them right back up and continued on at the gunshow

I am inclined to agree. There are ways to authenticate coins today that were not available years ago. Incidentally, when's the last time a TPGS defiled a coin in such manner to prove it was genuine?
