im beginning to see the light, smelling the roses n not quite ready to drink the kool-aid....it seems like only yesterday that certain members of our esteemed congress were blaming the methane problems on the cows, the receding ice caps n rising oceans on coal n wood burning stoves in appalachia, the forest fires in calf on gasoline car drivers in texas, fla, ohio n various other non-blue states....n here all along it seems  the problems were actually an over accumulation of bullc***p in various govt buildings, over population in non-ice cities, escape of energy at the bureau of printing from excess production of greenbacks n the possibility of a secret possum farm in eastern kentucky....rumor has it that a couple representatives from the philadelphia area r going to propose the issuing of a commemorative dime denoting the relocation of VKurt to roll-tide country proceeds to go towards the reduction of fossil fuel emissions on mars....our forseeable problems have been solved....n a new collectible series from the US mint on the horizon...what more could we ask for...

yeppers.....many , many diff reasons to buy coins n equally many, many diff reasons to certify/grade them....authenication, concensus grading, historical documentation, registry inclusion, security, uniformity of display n many more...none of which have anything to do with selling price....totally agree with ur assessment bout "eye appeal" or the beauty of certain coins, afterall some r miniature works of art or mini sculptures....i.e. some of the italian issues of emanuelle III easily rival our own mercury dimes, liberty walking halves, liberty standing quarters, double eagle saints in their beauty n artistry, i personally find the italian 1908 1 lira in gem state far more artistic n appealing than the 1908 saint double eagle, but to each his own.....

hoghead....its a 45,000 year cycle, if u live long enuf u will be able to hear the glaciers creaking by there in ole kaintuck, by then the liberals will be passing laws to mandate everyone has to burn so many gallons of petroleum products per day n u will have to increase ur carbon footprint by 1% per year, that is if there are any liberals left, if not perhaps we can commission a commemorative half dollar on their passing....

maybe....but i dont consider those buyers collectors in the true sense of the term, they r simply investors n speculators...personally dont think they truly add anything of value to the hobby, of course they supply the fodder that keeps the business aspect of numismatics running....guess it all comes down to why the individual is buying the coins in the first place....

the selling price or monetary value of a coin isnt the only or most likely reason for having a coin certified/graded....most coins are not purchased in the first place based on their selling price....

trust me...its a bad idea, in this counter culture, woke, political correct, revisionist environment the design and/or person(s) that would appear on the coin would not be any of our nations heros that helped establish our country...their memorials r being torn down as we speak....its better to have nothing than something envisioned by the persons who currently would make that decision...

zadok got a reaction from EdG_Ohio in Watch out buyers! Scammers are prowling!
u should be more clear about whatever it is u r trying to point out, creating fake photos doesnt lend any credibility to ur efforts, rather it diminishes them....if ur orig point was that there r fake morgans out there...yes they have been out there literally for decades by the thousands, as accurately pointed out by markfeld....n then u threw in something bout the increased interest in silver into the discussion to further confuse ur point...the increase in silver price has little to nothing to do with the counterfeiting of the morgans, but creating fake photos to illustrate ur points will turn off almost every reader on the forum....there r a couple that mite think thats a good idea but no one gives them any credibility anyway.....

zadok got a reaction from Philrs4 in 1854-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar with what I think is a die crack.
yep u can spend years studying the various die pairings in any of the liberty seated series....each has its own dynamics n amazing rarities, the half dollar series just happens to have the most extensive n comprehensive research available thanks to bill bugert n randy willey...one can literally spend years just attempting to complete die pairings from a single year, e.g. ur 1854-0 ...unfortunately u will find very little discourse on any of those series on this forum, its mostly lincoln cents, morgan dollars, st gaudens $20s , n modern silver issues here....for specialized collecting n research ur better off to join one of the more advanced groupings i.e. Liberty Seated, John Reich, Early Coppers, Barber series clubs....

zadok got a reaction from Philrs4 in 1854-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar with what I think is a die crack.
ur coin is prob WB-die pair 5-E.....bill bugert's registry of liberty seated half dollars (most likely the most comprehensive set of reference books on any coin series ever published) shows in great detail the various obverse n reverse dies used for this series n the die pairings utilized for each date n each mint etc....the 1854-0 issue was high mintage n there were many pairings of dies used almost all exhibit numerous die cracks at various die stages...1854-0 is replete with extensive die deteriorization, this date is fairly common , ur coin is most likely n xf45 plus grade but not likely to grade without details...there could be a question about natural toning or not n there r some field marks that may or may not result in details, its diff to assess a coin from photos...either way the $ value of this coin is prob worth less than $200 n as such marginal to have it certified....

occasionally, ncs n ngc dont get their billing data together, coins sent to ncs get processed n forwarded to grading n certification n the ncs charges show up as long as two months later, in my experiences with this they have just added to my next submission charges n not billed me separately, but i often have several submissions pending at the same time, still unfortunate for those not expecting the charges....
