But with the BP they were above melt, right ? :taptaptap:

I wonder if that was peculiar to Roosters or maybe also the case with other gold coins, MS or not ?  Could be someone willing to ditch them below melt (again, pre-BP) because they think gold is going to drop in price. :|

...no it was basically that way for all of the bullion related issues, swiss francs, sovereigns etc etc...even if in mint state, the only time any significant premium over bullion melt was if very high grades or top pops, as u mention with the bp n taxes the end price would be at or slightly over bullion, but not all buyers pay the taxes so one can actually buy at or slightly below bullion...as i have often stated this series n many others that served as bullion place holders dont have a big collector base, there r a few registry set collectors n in the roosters some interest in the pre restike issues but its very minimal, thats one reason u see so many unslabbed mint state coins, if it doesnt slab top pop u dont recover ur certification costs otherwise ud see dealers slabbing a hundred at a time as bulk submissions but there r not that many collectors to buy the mid range uncs....

I got to watch an example of that happen in real time. My professor for Money & Banking, at Franklin & Marshall, was called away and took a sabbatical to serve as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Banking, a year after I took his course in 1974. Many years later (he was kind of young as a professor in ‘74) I saw he was retiring finally. I called him, and he remembered me. He had morphed into an ultra-leftist wackjob. A past state Secretary of Banking. Wow!

My microeconomics prof became Prime Minister of Turkey, Tansu Çiller.

...i watch our elected congressional representatives query the appointed college presidents, im struggling to determine which r the biggest losers, i grade the lot Po-1 to Fr-2 not an Ag-3 among them....

Or even with those writers who seem not to be able to tolerate a flexible gold to silver price ratio, preferring a fixed ratio of the distant past? Makes it awfully difficult to have a standard based on bimetalism, doesn’t it? Imagine trying to insist that both metals “are money” when their relative values jump all over the place. No fixed exchange rates between ANY two monetary instruments has ever long endured. Bretton Woods actually disintegrated mere months after its full implementation. Because it HAD TO.

I don’t know about Coney Island rides. I’m pretty limited to Disney theme parks, BOTH U.S. ones, plus a one time visit to Universal Orlando. I even saw, from a distance, the French Disney.

Don’t be bored. Boredom is a prelude to death. Visit someplace neat. Monroeville, PA in mid-May, Colorado in June, Orlando maybe in July, or even Rosemont, IL in August. I’ll be at the first three, but so far (things change) not the fourth. When is the summer Baltimore show this year? If I lived in NYC, you couldn’t KEEP me off Amtrak. Alabama is a passenger rail wasteland. For now.

...u going to monroeville? i think ill go n see ben n george n abe if they r all there....

...fully aware, but one must consider the background of the board members as well...the NotY award often goes to a book writer whether they can find a publisher or not, the basis for the award was intended for those who promote the hobby, in many/most of the books ive either read or scanned thru i have seldom seen the word "hobby" at all, mostly a bunch of "me, my,i" adulations....

...this is also true for the selections for "most influential numismatists"...most on the list have never influenced one hobbyist only themselves, organizations, businesses within the hobby or publications associated with the hobby, if one wants to acknowledge true influential persons that have promoted the hobby one needs look no further than QDB, the true current influencers of the hobby were not even mentioned...even Walter still influences the hobby more than most on that list, RIP....

When people on the board were pointed to what happened before the ANA board in October 2014, their enthusiasm flagged measurably. Something involving a Mr. Carr.

No truer words have ever been written. But also, if you poll the body that made the appointment, they’d probably regret the decision. I have done such polling.

...lets not lose perspective here...in that same Numismatist article (august 2023) the cover n 7 pages were dedicated to the ANA's highest award recipient, Mike Fuljenz, for the Chester Krause award...the Numistmatist of the Year award was relegated to page 68 in a small 4 paragraph spread...what more can i say?....

Well, to be philosophical about this, eliminate the state of preservation and you pretty much not need not bother with the rest. Some feel toning should be considered. Shall we ostracize them?  I believe one of our presidents of the U.S. effected carnal knowledge with his slave. Shall we melt all his nickels down? Zsa Zsa Gabor slapped a police officer in the face, obstructed governmental administration and paid a hefy price for her intransigence. Shall we all collectively burn Roger at the stake for emphasizing preservation and have him burnt at the stake for simply suggesting the Earth revolves around the sun?  It's too bad I am merely a schlub, because I do have strong feelings about a number of things which, luckily for me, cannot be expressed on this Forum. 🤣

...to summarize:..only the "schlub" part is correct, rest just sick stuff....

I think today's forums like these here at NGC have supplemented the old coin clubs.  Sill nice to meet in person, but you can post anytime on any topic and get people from all over the country to provide information.

...its like going to that backyard bar-b-que in person or watching it on zoom, the pulled pork is so much sweeter if u r there, plus at the bar-b-que u can avoid the demented outlier here not so much....

@zadok.  To the best of my knowledge the last coin club in my hometown ended when it's founder, a man named Glenn died in 1982. There could be some private affair but if so I am not in their loop.  A fellow named Brian is one of the sons of Glenn.  He has been a vest pocket dealer for as long as I have known him.  We speak at least monthly so I would be surprised if he wouldn't have mentioned a coin club to me.

Sadly, due to a health crisis in December I have been  forced to isolate from the public for the last 4 months.  Otherwise I would have liked to attend one of their meetings.  They meet at a Perkin's the last Friday of each month and I have an open invitation.  If nothing else, I am hoping to find people there who would be interested in some of my many Numismatic books.  Neither the Library or the Hospital Aux. group will take them.  However at this time most of their members focus on buying junk silver.  James

...thats unfortunate...u mite try going to a local coin show when u can travel n ask sponsors if they r aware of any clubs?...as for ur books, some schools have student coin clubs n mite desire a donation?...

The second most outrageous comment I have ever made is the one I am about to make now:  In the absence of evidence of obvious chicanery -- and being  brought up to question everything -- I have little choice but to gravitate to RWB's camp.

For example, what hidden motive or axe to grind would he have for simply stating, "the materials available do not support the descriptions." ?

Everyone in Dealey Plaza that November day is entitled to say, "I was there. I saw everything."  And yet, eyewitness testimony has been challenged and, in recent years, found to be unreliable.  Survivors have stepped forward and claimed: "It's him!  I won't forget his face for as long as Iive." That is, until the DNA evidence is introduced.

I have read our Grand Master's writings for years now. I waver now and then, but am not in a position to dissect his methodology. Accordingly, I give him the benefit of the doubt.  I seriously doubt anyone would have a motive for seeking to pay him for a contrarion opinion.  To the contrary, his views delivered with complete confidence, if anything, inspires further consideration. I also do not believe the honorarium, "Numismatist of the Year," is bestowed lightly.

...to summarize:...poster void of substantiate thought defaulted to obsessive babbling yet again....
