Sadly, very true even in sloppy language. Merely basic greed. Fortunately, there are a small proportion who actually want to learn more although they might not know quite what it is they want to know. :)

However, there are many for whom the interest is broader and deeper - part of our economic and cultural heritage - and for whom "wanting the coins" is merely the superficial beginning, not an end.

...keep on telling urself that, while ur designing book covers...hint: sloppy sells, verbose n tedious not so much....

I think the narratives and stories and history behind our coins is part of the allure.  I'm interested in history, so maybe it's just me.

Isn't that why so many non-coin collectors ended up buying an SSCA coin ?  For the history...the story ?  (thumbsu

Maybe if I had more $$$ to be buying I'd be spending less time reading. xD

...the "allure" n "history" of the coins r certainly a part of the broader picture n make the hobby "warm" n "fuzzy" if thats ur driving motivation...but i dont think thats the mainstream motivation, otherwise u wouldnt see coin book authors running around begging for backers to publish their books...most collectors just want the coins n dont really care where they came from or how they got made or which mule carried which bag or ore down the mountain...or how many pounds of pressure it took to mash out each coin...regard the WF "hoard", the coins existed n needed to be sold to provide a profit so a story n a "nickname" had to be created to move the coins into the collectors hands n pocketbooks, after all there were more coins than collectors n trying to say "we got this bunch of so-so coins we found in a warehouse, how many do u want to buy" approach wasnt going to do the trick...ur reference to the SSCA coins is another prime example, first u create a market where one doesnt exist n then u try to find enuf buyers that r attracted to the "allure" n "history" n want a coin that really doesnt fit into their collection in the first place...but, it is only a hobby n there r really no rules n every collector has the privilege of setting their own boundaries n goals...its their money anyway...books r okay, perhaps u could just collect coin books, no bullion markups....

If you have a CONFIDENTIAL source and are actively buying hard-to-get coins, I get the secrecy angle.

But does Ron Gillio REALLY need to maintain secrecy about the exact origins of the 1908 No Motto Saint Hoard ?  It's been 28 years since then, I think the market had adjusted price-wise. xD  Ditto for any secrets regarding the SSCA.

That's my point.  I certainly don't expect folks to give out specific real-time sources of information if they are into competitive registry sets or trying to obtain a hard-to-get coin.  I'm just talking about filling in the blanks on stuff we are trying to ascertain for the historical record.

...why do u think any of those "blanks" r important?...how would any of that information add anything to the individual collector who mite want to buy or not buy one of those coins?...its like wanting to know what ur next door neighbor is doing about anything....

Q.A.  WHY, I NEVER... IN ALL MY YEARS OF PRODUCTIVITY... What an ingrate!  Just for that, JUST FOR THAT, I am going to send in my dues, and re-re-re-re-re-subscribe -- I already have new User Name picked out -- and I and my trusty side-kick, Ricky (no name change required) will once again resume our "We're on a Mission from God" duties: primarily broadening "the body of knowledge" of coin collecting, and enlightening Newbies to the ins and outs of the hobby -- even revealing, for the very first time in Chat Board history, the secret location of the "back door" for seamless entry and exits. What do you say?

🐓:  With all due respect, boss... I can't believe he punked us with that "... all in time... all in time..." jabberwocky!  It was all a ruse!  Very clever!

...the prerequisite to broadening, enlightening n revealing is that one has to have something to start with, perhaps there's an aide in the checkout line at the local grocery store...i dont think peter griffin has been taken yet....

While there will be those who will revel in my adversity, I should like to make clear that tho I have been termed an inveterate, habitual, compulsive, pathological, and congentital liar, at one time or another, a fairer more accurate descriptor would be a strategic liar.  The members from whom gifts were received from me, unsolicited, no pro quid pro, 🤣  could vouch for that irrespective of the strength of any of their views under the sun, I never allowed that to influence my decision.  One even called me "a great man"!

I will be back.  Dena will hear my feeble knock at the door. You know you're getting old and bored when you want to acquire things you know nothing about because you're tired of waiting for what you really want [need] to show up.  It'll also give the moderators a much-needed break.  :roflmao:

A great deal of Thread-Bumping going on... but why?  Ascension is automatic.  As members respond, the latest threads fall.  At any given time, four or five are exampt; they remain at the top.

I guess I am not ashamed to admit I was astounded by not only how well-written they were -- inoffensive really -- but also the author's tactic of arising early and hammering them all out... simultaneously.  I believe there were five.  Had nothing been done (or Just Bob were up early tinkering with his tokens) none would have been the wiser.  I had come across them after Ricky informed me the High Court handed down a decision in the Tarawa silver case. [Last I checked, that Topic had fallen off page one.] By that time, five or six in the morning, dozens of viewers had seen them. The post was geared to the tiniest segment of the membership. Moderation would have taken care of this. As it is, you've accomplished three things: 1.  Re-revived a Topic that was first posted eight years ago, which under VKurtB's Golden Rule on resurrection is verboten and death-penalty eligible; 2. inadvertently denied early birders the opportunity to view a surgical procedure which may have been of interest to members of child-bearing age; and, 3.  done something that would have taken care of itself without any intervention.

:signofftopic:  rantrant :  The other day I tried to access my daily online paper -- and couldn't. It shouted, COOKIES IS DIABLED! and ordered me to enable them!!!  I promptly called the Times and canceled my subscription, effective immediately.  I got flak from my cell company with flashing notices warning I was off-line and off the internet (despite encountering no difficulties).  I marched over to my local dealer, handed him back a modem and a router that they said likely was a lemon. I told them they weren't the only pebble on the beach and I didn't need them or want them anymore. [What really ticked me off was finding out my friend's repeated exhortations that I was paying way too much were correct!  My bill dropped precipitously.] Lastly, I canceled my subscription to NGC.  A rep called and asked why, since I had two months left, and lied. The truth is more complicated. But, as the Terminator guy once said, I'll be BAHCK!

True....but information and story-telling are important parts of this hobby.  It's the reason I do tons of reading on coins.  I LOVE reading about the background story.

Don't folks want the dirt behind the making of their famous movies or TV series...the problems that went on....the changes in casts that almost happened....the not-then famous director or producer who almost got fired by the studio...etc...etc.

    I guess I'm an outlier......:|xD:(

...no, there is a place for chit-chat n feel good stories...that doesnt mean one needs to tell all they know, however....

This information is not like the nuclear codes to the Black Box.....folks REALLY have to stop thinking this information will destroy their business or sources of information or whatever.

Same secrecy with Hoards and incoming supplies of coins.

...its simple...folks just dont need to know everything there is to know bout the availability or sources of coins...numismatics is not a community help program....

It is this type of unwarranted fear bordering on paranoia that has set back progress in human endeavors forever... Your autobiography, quite frankly, sounds repetitious and boring.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Chief navigator to Columbus: "Maybe we ought not to...That's uncharted territory... We might fall off the edge of the Earth!"  "Burn me at the stake!  I tell you my observations clearly indicate the Earth revolves around the sun!. But that's heresy!"

Young lad:  "Is this a copper penny (sic)?  Mint Director: "No 1943 cents were authorized for production!  Now get away from me kid, you bother me."

Coin collectors?  What a bunch of milk cows!

...n the downward spiral continues...there surely is a help line there in east harlem....

Elizabeth II’s reign has rescued the British crown from almost certain demise, perhaps forever, but certainly for the lifetime of her great-grandson, George. Yes, we may have to pretend that the current reign is some kind of weird extended interregnum worthy of an asterisk, and little else, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay. Long live Chucky da Turd.

Zadok....article in August 1933 NYT said that 35 billion French Francs had been hoarded, or about $2 BB U.S.  Not all gold, some silver, but probably mostly gold.

Even before the Depression hit, I think this was a response to WW I.   WW I had such an effect on the French psyche....the trench warfare....the evsiceration of millions of French men (in some towns, the ratio of eligible marrying-age females to men was 6-to-1 ).  Clearly scarred, the same country that largely held off the Kaiser's armies in 1914-18 folded in 6 weeks less than 25 years later when facing the Nazis.

I think this accounts for part of the massive hoarding in France relative to other countries. (thumbsu

...i definitely like the 6 to 1 ratio...a lot of the hoarded gold most likely ended up in nazi hands, but im sure every one hoarded everything they could, question would be just what gold was available to hoard?...obviously the restrike roosters prob not hoarded since never really put into circulation...lots of diff corollaries to follow to try determine what mite have shown up in hoards etc...but sort of need to know what was there to start with....

The authentic so-called "California Fractional" pieces are original fantasy pieces made by a jewelry company. In themselves, as noted above, they are not counterfeits. Fractional pieces of similar form made in the 1840s-50s originated in California, but were never manufactured to even the low standards of most private issues. This encourages the opinion that they were made for profit, for jewelry, and possibly to cheat the illiterate.

However, once an item such as either of the above, is accepted by collectors and resellers, Unmarked copies could be treated as true "counterfeits" because their intent is to defraud rather than ornament. Therein is the context.

    Hobby Protection Act

    Law: 5 U.S.C. §§ 2101-2106

    Links: http://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml

This Act, amended by the Collectible Coin Protection Act, Pub. L. No. 113-288, 128 Stat. 3281, prohibits manufacturing or importing imitation political items, and manufacturing, importing, or selling imitation numismatic items, unless they are marked in accordance with regulations prescribed by the Federal Trade Commission.

...interesting..."true counterfeits" r such because there was intent to defraud, so dan carr's coins were never intended to defraud therefore can never be considered "counterfeits"...thanks for clearing that bit up....

Tribute pieces, tourist pieces, replicas. See often, our Newbie discussion section. One example is the so-called “California Fractional” pieces that have a bear on them. Since there never was a true fractional with a bear on it, how can these pieces be considered counterfeits? No, they are inauthentic.

...thats a decent observation if it never existed it cant be counterfeited....
