  1. Thank you sir photography is a work in progress for me I doubt that I will ever master it but I will enjoy the journey no matter.
  2. Good luck, here is a recent photo using the camera/lens I bought from Ray, not perfect and I did do some photo editing but the end result is very close to the coin as it appears in hand.
  3. Well your question is rather vague so it is rather hard to know what you want others to discuss. My guess is that the info was a typo/human error when it was input either for the slab or into the database. I would not call it a specimen so the slab label seems correct and the database needs to be corrected, but only a call to the PCGS customer service has any chance of yielding any results.
  4. This is interesting as the prices for Morgan and Peace dollars at auctions have been sky high with not much sign of slowing down...yet.
  5. Its not an Amtrak or airline restriction, its the government that has placed this restriction; so the airlines or Amtrak can do nothing as they are powerless to change the rule. Now the ridiculous issue with the inability to stay on time is more about milking every penny in an attempt to recover the losses from last year; I get it but it is still horrible customer service when you consider that the customer was not the one that grounded transportation.
  6. I agree, we just flew to Denver to visit my daughter and the flight portion of the trip could not have gone worse. Very unprofessional and shoddy service; having said that; being forced to wear a face diaper for hour after hour on a train because of the irrational fear of a few scared (insert what word you like here) would really be like getting shot in the face with a 12 gage.
  7. Happy birthday!! I'm away from my laptop so no photos, however I hope you had a nice day with family.
  8. An interesting concept, not sure how collectors would react or respond to that.
  9. Thank you my friend, it would be very rewarding and a great honor but there are many deserving sets in the registry. For my part I will continue to improve my photos and descriptions for my own enjoyment and satisfaction,as I feel it should be with registry sets. I very much enjoy viewing your sets and reading your journals and am happy you continue to enjoy and enhance the registry experience.
  10. I think this discussion could benefit from hearing from both sides of the fence @USAuPzlBxBob has made some good points, however not every collector does/will feel the same way as he does. An actual example from my experience using the registry; I have a date set that was fairly highly ranked until just very recently. Several big pocket collectors recently started new sets that have one or two gold coins (the kind that cost over $50k) that have point values in excess of 11,000 points each. As a result my set with several of the coins needed to complete that set now sits closer to 10th place while the top sets have one or two coins in each set. This does not encourage me to want to go and complete that set from a competition standpoint as I will never be able to even come close because I don't have the $50k to go and buy one of the very few of those coins that are available to get those points. In fact now I will never complete that set and have decided to sell those coins and close the set as the set is now dead to an average collector like me. The point that I'm making is that if NGC were to allow the high points for these ultra expensive coins into the type sets it would kill the interest in those sets as only a tiny fraction of the registry participants have the financial means to run out and drop $50K, $100K or more on a single coin, assuming that they could even find one to buy. My thought is @USAuPzlBxBob's assertion that changing the point structure and allowing uber high point values into the type sets to "renew interest" will have the opposite effect and kill the interest for most type set registry collectors. @Ali E. If the registry team is considering changing the point system then I have a few suggestions for you. @USAuPzlBxBob is correct that the registry would be enhanced by participants including photos for each coin, and good full descriptions. So rather than changing the points assigned to uber expensive hard to obtain coins, instead assign bonus points biased on quality photos and descriptions that really describe the coin, its characteristics and pursuit of that coin. These bonus points should not be awarded for moon shot photos and descriptions that read "red" or "nickel", instead award points for the effort the set owner has put in to the knowledge of the coin not just the dollars. Another thing for the team to consider is expanding the number of best presented set awards to award those that really do put in the effort and knowledge. Now I understand that this is not an easy suggestion to implement, in fact it may well be much too difficult to manage, but that is a way to reward collectors vs spenders. Edited to add: I will echo @Revenant's comments above "Are YOU competing for rank or are you building a set that you like and enjoy and giving it a presentation you like and that you're proud of?" I have 30+ bet in catagory awards from the NGC registry, yes they are nice and I'm proud of those sets and what they represent. But I really hope someday that I will win a best presented set, that would be a very special award. If having a #1 set is what you want then you know the path to follow, if you want a set that is special to you then follow your passion and hope that it will be rewarded down the road not for having spent the most money but for your passion.
  11. A very nice coin @leeg, and I love the old school Hallmark holder.
  12. @Woods020 pretty much nailed it, collectors often focus too much on marks and not on the look of the coin. In todays market grading room the luster is the top priority especially when splitting grades at the plus and star levels. The plus coin has much better luster and a better overall "look" than the 64 coin, yes there may be an extra mark or two but the graders felt that the better luster carried the coin past those marks and awarded a plus. This is rather subtle at first but if you look at enough plus coins you can start to see that "look" that graders see when awarding plus grades. Remember not to focus on the marks so much and see the coin as a whole.
  13. Ok then that would suggest to me that the print was on the coin at the time of grading rather than placed there by an NGC employee. While it certainly is possible for an employee to inadvertently touch a coin and leave a print, I suspect that happens very, very infrequently.
  14. Just to clarify, are these coins you sent in for grading or coins you just bought in the holders?
  15. Looks like damage from a rolling/sorting/counting machine or some similar device, does not appear in this photo to have happened during the minting process.
  16. A far too long a period of collecting I guess if you break it down I have indeed completed a ton of mini P/D/S date sets and combined them into one large set. Lincolns
  17. Cool tokens, in answer to your question I have not completed a mini set; however I have completed a long set.
  18. The only one that does and continues to embarrass himself is you, you have lost posting privilege's on more than one occasion as a result of attacks and inappropriate behavior. Yet you need this place so much that you continue to come back and attack members, its as if you crave the negative reinforcement. I am not bent out of shape nor am I having a temper tantrum; far from it. The op has on more than one occasion asked you to refrain from excessive commentary on this thread, why do you feel the need to continue to go against his wishes. This is the last time I will post on this thread on this, I respect the op's desire that this be a thread for showing coins not a place for your attacks.
  19. It has nothing to do with contact tracing, if you are here illegally there is; as you are here illegally; a constant worry about deportation. Fear leads to irrational thinking and decisions that often are not biased on fact or reality. Of course that fear could be resolved completely by not being in the country illegally, but that is a completely different matter.
  20. Is his coin a 1930-S? If you had taken the time to review earlier posts you would see that there are no missing rivets on the 1917 that I and others posted also. Your comments are an unwelcomed attack and display a position of inadequate knowledge of the series or how to grade properly.
  21. The slab looks intact and I'm not seeing enough to suspect that the coin was switched. As you found out NGC only started to take the photos of every slab somewhat recently so coins in the older style holders will not have photos of them. The early 1960 timeframe was a time of very poor quality across the board for the US mint, overall this coin does not look bad or over graded, however that spot on the reverse is distracting and if it bothers you now it will only bother you more in the future. Its not all that unusual for some sellers to take photos in such a way to hide or avoid showing issues like this, they know that a high percentage of the time the buyer will just keep the coin rather than return. I would just contact the seller and request a return, better to spend a couple of dollars on return postage than to be unhappy every time you view the coin.
  22. Here it is the Hispanic undocumented that are afraid to get it, I have met many that think they will be tracked by the government and targeted for deportation if they get the vaccine.
  23. Actually all of those can produce good results with the proper setup and white balance settings. I personally prefer the small LED lights, I have some that are very similar to the ones that are on that system of Ray's that I linked. Purchased them from IKEA several years ago and, no longer available now unfortunately, but those lights in Ray's system are the replacement for what I bought that IKEA carries now (at least they did have them last time I checked). Here is an excellent article on lighting, it was done quite a few years ago but most of the info and the tips on how to use different types of lighting is still very accurate and relevant. Mark Goodman
  24. For sure and Ray is flexible and can customize as needed. In my case I had a copy stand already so I was able to shave off some and only bought the camera/lens pieces. I have not had a great amount of time to work on individual coin photos yet, but it has helped my results. Lighting is by far the most important aspect to good photos, you can have the best camera and lens money can buy but if the lighting is junk the photos will not be good.
