Is Ebay a good site to base coin worth off of? 1 1

Look only at sold listings. A coin is worth only what someone has proven they will pay for it.

As JKK stated, only look at sold listings.  In addition, ignore any anomalies that could be shill bidding.  If 20 coins sold for around $10 and one identical coin sold for $200, ignore that one.

eBay is my first go-to site for current and fair market values.  Keep in mind, there are legitimate coins that do sell for thousands on eBay.

Heritage and Great Collections are better.  I would be wary of Ebay listings, even sold items, unless there was active bidding.

Totally agree that HA will give you much more competitive comps on coins.  eBay has a lot of volume, but for whatever reason the buyers do not seem as educated and tend to pay well above established averages.  That said, all the advice on eBay (looking at sold only, remove anomalies, etc) is spot on!

Short answer no, you will get much better data looking at recent auction sites like Heritage, Stacks, and Great Collections.   These are more "real" numbers without all the low grade junk and shilling.   However the auction sites do not seem to handle as much of the modern material, so for that ebay closed sales can be slightly better, all of these are infinitely better than using sites like etsy or fakebook for pricing.

There are coins worth hundreds of thousands listed on eBay, and are legitimate. The problem is sellers have to mark things up 10% to cover fees. This isn’t a big issue with a $20 coin, but gets to quickly be an issue for higher end coins. I think a lot of dealers list them on eBay for marketing thinking smart collectors will go to their site and see it is cheaper. I do that myself. Surprisingly people pay eBay prices often, and it would be better for me and them to go to my website. 
 

With that said agree with all others. eBay prices are going to be higher to cover the fees. People still buy at those prices so they are true comps, but still high. Other auction houses will have better info on higher end coins. Greysheet and auction houses don’t do much with coins under say atleast $100. eBay is the go to place for moderns and lower priced coins and that is your best bet. So really depends on what you want comps on.
