The other 1902-O I was going to snipe on David Kahn's auction

closed for $405... This was after I raised my snipe bids twice. I

figured the rim toning was causing heavy bids. If I had bid I would

probably have to pay at least another $50 more... Then again, it's hard

to say what the other highest bidder would have paid.

I spotted the one I ended up buying at $349.99 plus $3.75 postage

and said, why not ?! The toned one was a bit too much charcoal grey

on the Obverse to suit me, although there were other jewel tones mixed in.

I ended up buying the 02-O from another Barber Collector, Scott Marzetti.

He frequents the PCGS Barber Thread. He has assembled a top notch collection

of Barber Halves and Quarters faster than anyone I know of. He and I were after

a truly magnificent 1904-S Half in a PCGS 53 holder, that was a hands down 55.

He saw the coin a few hours before I did. It was a nice coin and I liked it better

than my XF 40. Quite a bit better, and almost as much as my 55 and 58.

Needless to say, his XF 45 sold within a few days... so, all is right with the world.

By the way, as my retirement budget has been stretched to a fair-thee-well, I am

not bidding on most of the Barber Quarters in the upcoming Heritage Houston sale.

Only one Quarter has caught my eye ... and it's not a key or semi key. Common coin

in an AU 58 grade. My bids are in, and well calculated. Just to be safe, I will watch

the auction Live as well to,protect my bids. A word to the wise...

That 1897 O is a great pickup.

I agree, a VERY tough underrated date/mint mark

That coin is an MS 62. I have never found an AU for myself.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Barber Dime friend, Joe W (JMW ) has had an sob of a time
locating any AU of the 1897-O. Glenn Holsonbake found him an
AU 55 at a small show in Calif. ... In a PCGS holder !! I bought JMW's
XF 45 for my duplicate set.
JMW and I both feel that the 97-O is the Key Date of the series, yes,
even more so than the 1895-O. ( we are talking AU coins, here ).
Nothing new to report ... have a line on an upgrade for the Half set,
nothing too outrageous ! ?
The Half I had a line on is on it's way to me as I type this.
It's a minor upgrade from my XF 40 to this AU 50 ... But,
it's more in keeping with the look I am trying to achieve.
Picked this up tonight.
In case it doesn't attach, I may not be able
to attach it at all, as my lap top isn't displaying
The commands at the bottom of the posts.
I can no longer edit, add, attach or link anymore.
So, here goes, my latest, un update to the Dime set:
MRKBROWN...
Sounds to me like the pot calling the kettle black.
You do okay for yourself. I am on numerous sites'
mailing lists, I am bound to locate something I like
without too much effort. I wouldn't have bought the
new 1909-O Dime imaged above, if I hadn't already
had a customer waiting for my 09-O in AU 58.
My new Dime arrives today by Express Mail - and my
AU 58 is being picked up this weekend by my friend who
is visiting for the weekend. ...
This one belongs to a friend. He just gave it to me to include in my next shipment to NGC. The color's a bit off in my awful pictures but there appears no break in the luster. I think it gets MS 63. Whatcha think?
Thanks for posting, guys.
The 1908 Dime should get a 63 ( maybe a 63+ )
I saw no luster breaks either.
The 16-D Quarter is really very attractive. I believe
Ankur has an excellent eye and have been very
pleased with everything he has shown us, your coin
included. I love the obverse toning. Really special.
That old lap top problem is fixed... now there are new problems.
Its been two years since the lap top has had any service - its time !
I can't usually add images from the iPad, as I can't transfer
images from Photobucket. Most of the images I recover are
too large to fit into the NGC format for attachments.
This is very disturbing as I enjoy adding images to my posts.
Oh, well. One of these days, I hope someone will straighten
this out for me.
Again, thanks for posting your coins everyone. Nice stuff getting
into this thread. Can't remember how many hits this thread has,
but it's got to be close to 160,000 now. ( only 1% of that amount are
actual posts ) :makepoint:
I discovered another unusual coin today.
A friend of mine just bought a really sweet 1899-O Dime
with lovely rim toning and flashy centrals with minimal rub.
It was graded in a PCGS holder, as an AU 58.
No argument there - its hands down an AU 58.
After looking at it for a few seconds, on my iPad, I enlarged the
date area to about 4" X 9". the coin is an RPD.
Having Kevin Flynn's most recent book, I looked up
which RPM this coin was and I'm kind of shocked to
say, it doesn't match any of the 7 known RPD's out there.
I'll copy the image later - and post it - I think it looks like
an 1899 / 1898 - O.
If you look at this date on an iPad where you can blow up the image,
look at the final two digits of the date...
"99" ... RPD..... or......"99/8" Overdate.... ??????????????
Interesting past couple of days, more details about a Die Variety
of a Barber Quarter when I get back from FUN.
Actually had the opportunity to sit down with two friends from the
ANA Summer Seminars - David Lange and John Schuch - who work
at NGC.
We discussed my latest find and it was determined it's not a die
variety, but PMD. Ugh !!
Two and a half hour drive each way to meet for lunch but I also met
Keyman64 - so the conversation was good and the time flew by.
Newp for today... Not sure if it'll attach as I am on the iPad.
..."files too large".... Off to photobucket.... Will repost images !
Thought the images were subdued - I think the coin will look more
like the holdered images.
Just worked out a deal with a friend who's selling off his Quarters,
and I will be meeting him at FUN to relieve him of this 1912-S in
PCGS 55.
My last set had a stunning 58 & CAC 'd, but I think this one won't
upgrade, but should CAC without much of a problem.
Again, if it doesn't attach, it's off to Photobucket...
lol... No if's about it... Am off to Photobucket now:
Thanks, Frank. I'm picking that 12-S up at FUN next week from the TinCup collection,
a la: Walt Kennedy. Really pleased to be getting it. Have not seen a 12-S in 58 in ages.
While at FUN, I have a line on another for Quarter set: 07-O in an OGH PCGS 58.
Images to follow:
Other than these newps, I'll be roaming the aisles looking for either upgrades for the Dime or Half sets... And I will be at the BCCS meeting on Friday January 10th, Room: W232A @ 3:00 to 4:30 PM.
While there, I will have two coins that will cause quite a stir. A newly discovered 1901-S Quarter certified by NGC - AU 58 - which is in a Philadelphia Mint holder ( I refer to it as "The Ghost" )The Mint Mark was effaced from the die and then put into production at the Philadelphia Mint. The Mint Mark is visible with low magnification - but all who see the coin say " OMG - I see it "
I discovered the coin on a BST at PCGS, and knowing the YN who owns the coin ( I had just bought a nice 1906-D Quarter NGC 55 from him a few days before )., I texted him to remove the coin from the BST as he didn't realize what he had. He looked at it again, and almost started crying from surprise and pure happiness. I have driven the coin to Sarasota for a meeting with David Lange and a grader, John Schuch ( my ANA Summer Seminar Grader from 2012 ) .
Their determination was that because the coin's effaced Mint Mark was in the wrong location ( it is over the last R of Quarter ), they said the positioning was not used after 1892. True, but my contention was that mint marks were all hand punched and the reason this mint mark was effaced, was because it was placed in the wrong location. They were not buying my argument.
We'll see what the members of the BCCS have to say about it.
Oh, the second coin I'm bringing to Show and Tell is the finest known 1892-O Micro O Half Dollar from the Dale Friend collection. It's graded, PCGS MS 68. He's letting me borrow it for the meeting. A very generous gesture, if I do say so myself. The coin is for sale - not sure of the price - but it's in the vicinity of a half Million Dollars., ?
No new images.
Glenn got a few of his slab shots up on his new web site.
So, I have the images of my newps. I will wait for the close
ups when he has time inbetween shows. He's one busy guy.
Couldn't be more pleased with the 1907-O, it's in an OGH, &
I think it should CAC if and when I submit it.
Frank,
The day I arrive, I am having Todd image the Ghost.
Glenn is using Todd's and Charmy's tables as home base,
as they lost his FUN Dealer Application and check.
