I picked up a few more Dimes for the collection - three of which I once owned - and had to pay the Piper - believe me - to get them back.

This coin was originally in the TCP-III Collection - aka: Tom Casey - I bought it in 2009 - sold it at Heritage's Chicago ANA 2011 sale - and what ever profit I made, I have given back to get this great coin back.

Hi all, I'm new to these boards. I've been an avid collector of Barber Halves for years but began getting the graded last year (NGC & PCGS). I'm trying to assemble an XF to AU set, but I currently have a few higher, lower, and problem coins in my complete set.

Although I already have a nice MS 63 1905 O Barber Half I've been looking for a nice AU coin. Look what I found last week:

1905%20O%20REV.JPG

I sent in to NGC over the weekend- it looks like a nice AU 58 to me. Thoughts?

Jeff - Welcome to the NGC Forums !!

The 05-O is stunning - and I can easily see it in a 58 holder ...

and I think NGC may grant you another 58 [ I would call it a 55 ]

on the 1900- Phila. Nice coin. The last coin, an 1894-S, is also deserving

of an AU 58 as well, provided that the obverse facial marks are not deep..

Looking forward to additional images - and someone else feeding this

Thread. Hope you're a member of the BCCS - and look forward to meeting

you one of these days. I'll be at the Chicago ANA - if you are as well, I'll

be helping my friend out at Holsonbake Numismatics.

I am a member of BCCS- I met you at FUN and joined. I'm in the picture posted in this thread from the FUN show in January- just to the right (as you look at it) of the banner.

Thanks for your kind words. I'm a real fan of the Barber Halves for now- maybe others later.

Welcome, Jeff. Thanks for sharing your coins.

That 05-O I could see getting a 58. But don't be surprised if they put a 55 on it for the soft strike.

The 1900 I feel is around a 53 with the mark on the neck. There looks to be a lot more wear than a 58 would warrant.

I could see a 58 on the 94-S.

Nice coins, keep them coming.

I will start posting some of the images I got back. either later this evening or tomorrow evening.

OK, I'm 2nd to the right in the photo (as you look at it). I'm in a little city to the north of Mike where there's NFL football, NHL hockey, and MLB baseball (and FUN was held here once).

Predicting grades by details at NGC/ PCGS seems easy. Predicting what they call "cleaned" seems impossible. So far neither of you have brought up the subject (thank god) but I'm guessing at least one of them comes back "cleaned" (only from experience, not because any of them look it). Just one inappropriate touch seems to turn Gem to cleaned.

Ok, Jeff, I do remember talking to you after the meeting was over - during "show and tell" with John Frost ...

Its hard to call those three Halves Uncirculated - as clearly they all have

rub to some degree or other. The 05-O & 94-S have good shots at a 58,

the 1900-O is not quite as pristine as the others - so I'm calling it a 55.

What NGC calls them is a whole new ball of wax. The graders can be

very strict and net grade / genuine a coin if they believe there is anything

askew. Its been said before - there are no more free lunches in the grading

room. lol

So, Jeff, are you going back to Summer FUN in mid July ?

I think I'll try and make it on Friday. Maybe I'll see you there !

Last post for awhile ... here are the two new Quarters ...

This 1915-S Quarter was also once in my collection - sold it 2 years

ago - and decided to buy it back - for actually less money that what I sold it for !

I just saw this coin today on a friends web site and have made arrangements

to have it shipped to me.

Oh yes, I'll be back for Summer FUN!

I agree that all three coins show a bit of wear. I don't see the '00 doing any better than 53, but I'm hoping for 58 on the '05 O & 94 S. From what I've seen the common "soft" strike on the O halves seems to be acceptable. We'll see in a few weeks.......

It seems the trickiest Barbers are the AU's for cleaning. The VF's & XF's I submit rarely come back with the kiss of death. I'm thinking of starting a new business- carrying around pockets full of AU cleaned Barbers turning them into nice XF's with a new skin.

See you at FUN then !

Here's a coin I looked at at FUN last January and a friend bought it because its

such an amazing rim toned coin. It was one of the nicest looking lower graded

[ANACS 63] Barber Dimes I have ever seen. He bought it from a dealer I have

great respect for - Joe Kaminski - and I know Joe treated my friend right.

Well, as fate would have it, the coin I previewed for my friend is on its

way to me, as my friend doesn't collect Barbers - but was only captivated

by its appearance. Although I have a few 1893's - this one is worth having.

I have been pretty lucky recently - I found a number of my old Dimes

available on Heritage and on Great Collections... plus a few others.

Also picked up another group of four Quarters...

Mike that sure is a looker.

Thanks - I sort of liked it when I saw the auction house images - but I can't trust their images very often. When I registered the coin ATS - this image popped up.

I'm really excited to be getting this coin asap. I want to take it with me to the ANA Summer Seminar course that I am co-teaching with Glenn Holsonbake:

"The Coinage of Charles E. Barber "

Here's another newp - same auction - same pleasing discovery at PCGS :

Jim,

A 1911-P Quarter in 64 is a great coin - it looks very lusterous....

My eyes are trained now to just search out only AU Quarters - so,

fear not, I won't be bidding against you on MS Quarters - now, Dimes

on the other hand...

Here's another new Dime: [ Same auction ].

Well, the last three Dimes came out of the Long Beach Heritage

auction this past weekend.

The next nine Dimes are out of Great Collections auction this

past weekend as well. The funny thing is that four of the nine

were in my first or second sets. So, I'm just buying back old friends.

While browsing for Dimes - I found one that I had bid on a

couple of weeks ago - an 1892-P with really beautiful rim toning

but it was in a Gennie holder - and I was just going to crack it out

for the 7070 Type set. It sold for $5 more than my bid - oh well...

but the buyer relists the coin on eBay - and asks 100% markup

over what he paid. Needless to say, my friend Dimeman ATS is

up in arms about this not being in a graded holder.

The coin was relisted today at $345 [ he paid $145 for it - plus the juice ]

No one will touch it at that price - but regardless - the coin sure is pretty.

I stumbled across this 09-O Dime in an ICG 58 - and bought it

without asking my Dime mavens what they thought - seems this coin

has been around the block a few times - and has sold and been returned

more than a few times - oh well... its still a nice looking coin...

I posted a raw photo of the 1900 Barber half a couple of weeks ago that I sent to NGC:

1900%20AU%2050%20OBV.JPG

1900%20AU%2050%20REV.JPG

I guessed it would come back as a AU 55, but I wasn't taking the hits on the obverse into consideration. It came back as an AU 50- oh well.

NGC%20O.JPG [/img] NGC%20R.JPG

I have it listed on eBay, I submitted another 1900 Barber Half at the same time and it came back as an AU 55 (no pictures of that one yet). The 1894 S is still in the grading process- hopefully it will be graded this week,
