Earlier this month, I swapped coins with the YN [ Mike Valente ]

who helped at out at our table at the FUN Show. Mike had generously

given me this coin in lieu of another .... I found him an equally nice

1905 Dime in PCGS 58 and I got a date that has eluded me for months.

Thanks again, Mike !!

I picked up an old coin of mine from a friend who had bought it

back in 2010. It came out of my Dansco album... and considering

that I have sold off my first two Dimes sets and am now 95%

complete with the third collection - I thought I'd add another of

my old coins.

Originally bought raw from David Lawrence in 1994 and it resided

in my Dansco until 2010, when I sold it to the JMW Collection.

My friend, Joe, upgraded the coin and I definetly wanted it back.

Just picked this up for my 3rd Set of Dimes...

1907-DDimePC58RevH_zps609baad1.jpg

Just a bit of info on this date. According to Lawrence - who mentions that it is just rumor -

there were four wagon loads of 1907-D Dimes that left the Denver Mint and somewhere along

the way in the cliffs of the Black Canyon, all four wagons were lost ... this was reported in

Numismatic News based on an article by Ed Rothette and reprinted in the BCCS Journal - Vol. 2 - # 2;

This date also happens to have the absolute lowest over all POP

of any regular issue Barber Dime - the only one with fewer certified

[at PCGS ] is the 1893/"2". Only 91 have been certified in all grades

ATS.

Before I went to FUN - I went thru my Half Dollar collection

and determined that there were a few coins I thought were

undergraded. I was very conservative in my grading and I

thought these six coins were deserving of an upgrade or at

least a PLUS.

Date:-------Current Grade ------ Expected Grade------New Grade

1894-P...XF 45........................AU 50........................AU 50 ... :applause:

1898-P...AU 50....................... AU 53........................AU 50.... :screwy:

1902-O...VF 35........................ XF 45........................VF 35..... :makepoint:

1907-S... VF 35........................XF 45........................VF 35..... :makepoint:

1908-D....XF 40.......................XF 45.........................XF 45..... :applause:

1909-O....XF 45.......................AU 50........................AU 50..... :acclaim: .

The three that didn't upgrade are so far undergraded its not a laughing matter.

I bought the 02-O in VF 35 because it was so undergraded - I paid XF money for it -

and I thought it was worth it... as I knew the coin would get a 45. Wrong !

This baby is coming home... its from the Elbesaar-II Collection

which was auctioned in August, 2011. When I saw it on TeleTrade

this week, I knew I wanted it back for the Elbesaar-III Collection.

I had to chase it ... but I think it was worth it.

In hindsight, maybe CAC would have been a better option

Just before the weekend, I was accepted into CAC.

I have every intention of doing submissions to them

of coins that I feel are on the high end of their respective

grades.

Before I sold my last Barber collection in Chicago, 2011,

I had instructed Heritage to have any coin above a certain

dollar figure certified at CAC. I will do so again, when the

time comes.

In the mean time, I'll cherry pick out a few things to be

CAC'd within the next few weeks.

I will never see that reverse wreath enough to tire of it. Who designed it....was it Gobrecht ?(sp?)......an example like the one above....with every detail...never ceases to amaze me. Only a master could engrave something as intricate as that on a scale so small. GOD BLESS...

Jom... Late to the party are we ?

Yes, I started another set last year and have virtually another

AU 50-58 complete set - missing only a few in AU for the

complete set (*) ; and for the MS 62-66 Date set, I am approx.

66 % Complete.

(*) = Elbesaar-III

Plus another VF/XF set I am working on for a cousin's 14 yr old son.

which is approx. 35% complete.

This is an entirely new set.

Yeah, so it was 2011...time does go by fast. The earlier set was mostly AU, right? I think that was the sale I never got to see...I was lazy and could have seen them up in Beverly Hills at the Heritage building there.

Jom,

The earlier set which sold in 2010 was sold in its entirity to one collector :

{ JMW Collection - Beancounter Collection }, no one but he, my friend

Glenn Holsonbake, and a local friend { Chris Machuga} and the graders

at PCGS ever saw these coins

As JMW upgrades these XF45-AU 55's, I have been buying them back at

the same prices I sold them to him for. I remind you that these were the ones

that never saw the light of day for over a dozen years and were stored in the

Dansco album inside the Safe Deposit Boxes in hot and humid SW Florida.

The bank shut off its A/C every night and on weekends - causing major

temperature swings inside the vault. It affected the toning of the coins greatly.

I ended up buying a precertified collection from Tom Casey { TCP-III Collection } -

and those coins were even nicer than my old ones - couldn't

resist these beauties.

Ok... here are a few more new images....
