Jeff,

The first set of images - show at least an AU 53-55 coin -

I'd say our hosts are being overly conservative - for a change.

That is a nice coin and deserves to be graded at least a 53.

I received my 1909-O Dime today - and I'm cracking it out for

submission - I think it'll get a 55 - not really 58 material. Nice coin though.

JeffRM, PM sent.

====================

Well, after one week of co-teaching The Coinage of Charles E. Barber at the

Summer Seminars at the ANA in Colorado Springs - ( with Glenn Holsonbake /

PonyExpress8 ) and another as a student at Bill Shamhardt's Advanced Grading

course, I immediately went to Summer FUN.

Although the FUN show was much smaller than the Winter ones, I enjoyed myself.

Meeting friends and chewing the fat with them, browsing some of the tables, and

auction lot viewing made for a busy two days for me.

Of course, I was able to find a few goodies at my favorite tables, but I'll wait to

discuss them once I have them imaged.

Heritage auctions "on line" are today. I have two bids in on a couple of Quarters.

Prices on Heritage are up to a point that you can toss ANY price guide out the window !!

I am at triple grey sheet for a nice AU quarter and although I am high bidder,

a well placed bid will knock me out and I am not chasing a common date no matter

how nice it is. It's getting out of hand for 58's.

Seems I have been having some success with AU 53's ( borderline 55's ).

Well... Happy hunting !!

I just received a new purchase and took some pictures to post. They show the detail well, but not the coins luster (they make it look dull). I still need to figure out this photography thing!

Here's the coin- an 1894 S Barber Half Dollar in a PCGS holder:

Does anyone care to guess the grade?

Jeff,

That's a beautiful coin, for sure. The little bit of rub on the high points,

seem to give the impression the coin is a 55... Maybe the lack of luster

in the image is holding me back from a higher grade.

My newps from FUN were a pair of Nickels, a pair of Dimes, and, a pair of Quarters.

No Halves this time. Couldn't find any that would fit my set for an upgrade ! Sure, there

were many MS available, but no wholesome 53's !!

Mike-

I believe the '94 S half should grade 53 to 55. I agree that it won't go 58 (even though it has a lot more luster than I'm getting in my photo); there's a bit too much wear for that. This coin has been in it's holder for about 20 years:

This coin has to be the best looking XF45 I've seen. The graders must have been having really bad days when this came through.

So now the question- do I resubmit it for reconsideration, crack it out and resubmit, or just leave it alone and get a CAC sticker? Does CAC do double gold  for coins 2 steps under?

Me personally, I would crack it. Take care of the PVC spot on the reverse and resubmit. That looks like a solid 53 coin.

I agree, Justin. Better to get it into the correct grade first - then

submit it to CAC - you may still get a Gold CAC at the 53 level.

Jeff, you're right, that has to be one of the nicest 45's in existence !!

I think that's the only reason I might keep it in the current holder- to have "the best" of something!! :insane:

Other than sending the coin in for conservation is there another way to get rid of the PVC spot?

Jeff, yes - you can give it an acetone bath - and the PVC spot will come off.

You chance damaging the coin when you crack it out...

Personally, I would send it in for conservation in its holder, [ let the pros handle the PVC ] and with the caveat of reconsideration.

{ Killing Two Birds With One Stone ! }

I think there is some sort of guarantee on PVC - not sure - but its worth a shot.

Thanks for the kind words about the 07-O in 53 ... I wanted the 58 - but with

all the crazy money being thrown around, I decided to settle for a perfect 53.

I spotted this 1903 Phila issue - and now my set can check off all the 1903's.

I feel that conservation service on that spot is a waste of money. Cracking a slab is not hard. I have done it many times and plenty of times on PCGS coins. A simple toothpick dipped in acetone and a gentle hand will make that spot disappear. I feel there is no need to submerge the whole coin. But then again, if you don't feel comfortable, use the experts. But I fear they would use a full dip in MS70 or something worse.

I have used NCS with excellent results - they cracked the NGC slab open - they

removed the pin dot of PVC - they sent the coin back to NGC - where it was returned

in a new NGC holder, in the original grade.

Yes, I could have more easily cracked out the coin - removed the pin dot of PVC

and submitted the coin directly to NGC - and kept my fingers crossed the coin was

returned back to me in the same grade it had when I cracked the coin out.

If the coin did down grade - the financial savings of self conservation would have

been wiped out - or - possibly got a "Genuine - Cleaning" holder back.

If I elect to buy a raw coin - and it needs conservation via acetone - I'll take my chances.

I have never treated a coin with acetone, but there's a first time for everything.

Wang... Your 1st post... And very inappropriate.

Advise your removing it. This thread is for collectors

who appreciate the Barber coinage and not for those

who wish to ridicule it.

I have seen that fake posted before. I'm positive its the same coin.

Seems we have Bongo-Bongo in our midst.

No offense Wang. Seriously. I am sorry for your loss. I also lost

my Dad in 2008 - and we would share stories of collecting as well..

Now, let's move on.

Tenacious fellow.

I hope everyone has had a few minutes to browse the Owen Collection, Part One

that is being offered by Heritage in a few weeks. It seems as if the offering is so

large, they have broken the sale into two, parts. Part two will be offered at Long Beach

in September.

I had planned on previewing the Part One section - however - Heritage's sale is a few

days before I arrive in Chicago. Possibly, the Part two section will be available for viewing

during the convention in Chicago.

As a side note, the Owen Collection's Half Dollars have many of PonyExpress8's coins

included. I know my friend Glenn is excited to see his old coins again... As I am to view

them in hand as well.

Wow, that is one clean V Nick! Awesome purchase!

Thanks, Justin. I thought it was a really choice 64.... a friend had alerted me to the holder

as being very scarce in the past and when I saw the near flawless coin in that old holder,

it was a given that I get the coin.
