I just got done reading about the adjusters today. The coin I posted above dosent have anything to do with them. Be cool if someone had a coin to post with file marks from adjusters. Would let newbies like me see the differance between adjustment marks, drawbench marks, and damage.
The obverse of this coin has some remaining marks from filing that striking didn't obscure.
It's funny - in my own mind, when I think of adjusters, I drift to a Wicked Witch of the West type scenario with the adjusting lady/ladies in their wicked voice saying - give me that gold my pretty and filing grains at a time.

Judging by the auction catalog - with prices annotated - it's likely the outcome was they were sold.

Been a long time since I've updated this, I mostly keep it up to date ATS - but here is the current census (38 known) and new this week is a new Top Pop - an NGC AU55!!.
Few things I need:
I have pictures for all but one coin if anyone owns/knows the owner if I could get pics of: coin 22 (PCGS VG8) currently in the jwinter(2) registry set
Info on the recently graded NGC AU55 - Story how it was found/where it came from - Would like some close-up pictures of the motto if possible.
Below is the census as they are found (1-38), then sorted by condition census, then sales history by price as well as sales history chronologically.
Still waiting for the first Uncirculated example, although an AU55 is still pretty exciting!

I suppose in today's world, resignation letters like those would be all over the Internet and social media, but back then to be in newspapers - and close to the date of resignation (9/18 & 9/21) - makes you wonder if Pollock provided the newspapers with a copy. He didn't appear to be a "Happy Camper".

At one point in the first year or so, I updated a thread in 4 of the bigger coin forums. Today, mostly the post ATS you linked.
When this started, I figured after a few years, there would be hundreds of them known, and keeping a census wouldn't be possible as they would be popping up too frequently. At just over 6 years now, my census has 34 unique examples, with a likely 35th new to the pop reports I need to chase down details on. So far, the sales are spread out enough that I can keep up on sales history too with frequent searching, and a lot of help/messages from other forum members.
I thought about doing a downloadable PDF with pictures of all the coins (I have pics of 33 of the 34) and history and such and update that or at one point was going to register 1919DDODIME.com but again... I figured after a year or two, it would be so big it would be impossible to keep up with.
Fast forward 6 years and it could have been done in hindsight, just never did. Hopefully the Cherrypicker's Guide comes out this year with it featured (June 15th 2021 according to Amazon) and that will jump-start the searching and finding enough where keeping a census is somewhat impractical. Time will tell.

I think the saddest of them all was Nicholas Brock. 18 years old, and passed a single dollar.

Oops - 31 on the list (29 names, 2 unknowns). Let's see how this formats. Would make an interesting book researching all the death penalties for counterfeiting. Probably a side of numismatics not very often researched.

The Boston Numismatic Society was a frequent requestor of patterns as well. I saw more in the digitized archives, but only have a few specific letters bookmarked.
Jan 1877 letter requesting to know if more patterns are available since the Trade Dollars, cites a Mint Regulation (Rule 3)?
Dec 1877 letter requesting a set of of patterns
January 1878 letter requesting pattern pieces. Letter references Mint Regulations received Sept 1874 "The Superintendent will furnish without charge on application therefor a pattern piece to any incorporated numismatic society in the United States. In such case if the pattern is in gold or silver, the value of the metal will be required" (Could this be Rule #3 referred to in the Jan 1877 letter?) So... were copper patterns free since it said gold or silver the value will be required?
According to this December 27, 2015 eSylum article, the club's cabinet was donated to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
https://www.coinbooks.org/esylum_v18n52a12.html
In the late 1880s, membership in the BNS lagged, due in part to the aging of its members. Meetings became less frequent and, in the latter part of the century, the society donated $300 and its impressive cabinet of numismatic items to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and another $300 and its library to the Boston Public Library. Appleton’s death in 1903 left the BNS with but four of its original members.
I searched the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection - below is link just to Numismatics between 1874 and 1900. Sadly, most don't have pictures, and I found nothing with a provenance of Boston Numismatic Society. There are a lot of interesting coins in their collection that do have images (although not BNS ones).

Haven't updated this in awhile, but a few more have showed up in pop reports and think 3 are on eBay right now. Pretty sure I have no duplicates thus far as I have pics of them all except the one shown to Rick Snow, will probably be harder to keep a census pretty soon as more come out of the woodwork, but we're up to 14 known (to me).

Why wait when you can get the original today. It's now on the bay BIN $11,550.
Go Go Go!
In my completely objective (cough) opinion this will be looked at as a screaming bargain in the not too distant future!
I no longer own the Discovery Coin they now have listed in the eBay auction you linked.
I hope they do well with it.
2 others had been on eBay (Listed at $9,999 (the XF-40) and $7,999 (the VG-8)) and ended up selling privately off of eBay.
Still kind of excited to see what the XF-40 will do at Great Collections.
-
The ANACS XF-40 example is now graded PCGS XF-40 and is being auctioned by our firm.
Regards,
- Ian
Thanks Ian, I contacted Leo who said he didn't cross it, wasn't aware it changed hands, at least that mystery was solved.
There have been a few sales already of these, with strong prices, albeit dealer to dealer or discoverer to dealer. I'd be real curious what it goes for in a "True Auction" - Best of luck!

From what Jeff has told me, it is still in conservation. So still waiting on the official grade.
Not sure if you caught the post ATS, but the #2 piece is:
NCS AU Details - Environmental Problems
We're still at the 7 reported AND confirmed.
1) ANACS VF-20 - Discovery piece (StrikeOutXXX / Jeff Sam)
2) NCS AU Details - Environmental Problems - Confirmation piece - Own inventory - John Hodson
3) PCGS VG-8 unattributed, then ANACS VG-8, back to PCGS VG-8 Attributed - Bulk over the counter B&M Purchase (KearneyCC / Bjorn Bergstrom)
4) ANACS EF-40 small show Portland, OR (Dealer folder unattributed) - (jtlee321/Justin)
5) NGC - Good - Owner Unknown
6) NGC - Good - Owner Unknown
7) NGC - Good - Owner Unknown
I check NGC/PCGS each day as well as watch the 4 main coin forums that has a thread and eBay. The ANACS population report doesn't break this out on their own any legible way I can tell, so hard to tell if any more are there.
I asked Mr. Gibbs who wrote the Coin World article to let me know if he had any reports of others from folks who maybe don't frequent the forums, or maybe don't care to get things graded, and haven't heard anything from him either. Not sure really where else to check to keep an eye on this. keyman64 keeps his ears open too quite a bit as well.

I'm starting to doubt the claim now. He posts that he has 2 and then disappears? If you truly have them and cannot take any photos right away, at least state that you will when you can. But silence does not help the case.
I'd like to see photos too. If he doesn't post some soon, I'll take those 2 off the unofficial census for now - Back when the Coin World article hit - on their Facebook there were a few false claims there, so it's happened before. We'll see.

I got two of these, both circulated, ungraded, but likely F-12 or close to it. Had them for decades.
What impact would this find have on their worth, worth a lot more to collectors now, but what impact would this find have on their Red Book value? anyone want to hazard a guess?
I am a numismaphile wetnose, I do not want to even try to answer this question. I am just happy I have two humdrum coins that are no longer humdrum.
Congrats!
Pictures would be great. As Keyman said, yours would be #8 & #9.
These will be in the next Cherrypicker's Guide, probably be in the next Redbook, and likely added to the registries.
Nobody knows value-wise where these will fall, but... there will be quite a nice multiplier of a normal Fine 1919 Merc 8-) I think the first one will be selling in the next few weeks, so we should get our first idea of value before too long.
Here are the known ones (at least to me) I've been keeping track of ATS:
1) ANACS VF20 - Discovery piece (StrikeOutXXX / Jeff Sam)
2) XF Details/Cleaned? - Confirmation piece - Own inventory - John Hodson
3) PCGS VG-8 then ANACS VG-8, heading back to PCGS for Attribution - Bulk over the counter B&M Purchase (KearneyCC / Bjorn Bergstrom)
4) High VF? - Raw small show Portland, OR (Dealer folder unattributed) - jtlee321/Justin

One of my favorite links here:
https://archive.org/details/RG104Sequence77Box7Folder7/page/n79/mode/1up
Includes this - it's from 1973, but the same sentiment was in earlier letters from the mint I don't seem to have bookmarked unfortunately. When I first saw the thread, I told myself for sure Roger would post some letters from NARA
There are a lot of other interesting topics in the pages of that link too.
