  1. Well, sometimes I guess I just can't help myself. makepoint.gif I'm out here in west Texas visiting the folks and there is one coin shop, the only one apparently within a couple of hundered miles. I spent a couple of hours there yesterday going through a lot of coins.

I found this 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent that I decided to acquire to replace the one that I have which NGC is of the opinion has been artificially colored. I wish I could image this one as Bob does, since the toning and color is more pronounced.

    Grade opinions welcome please.

  2. Thanks for the postitive feedback on the LI. Tom, the coin is very well struck and the lustre is truly fantastic. I looked at it as carefully as I could before I decided to take it, got it for low AU money, but I do think it would grade at better than that. Regardless, the overall appearance and condition of the coin immediately caught my eye and interest which is what counts IMO.

    Thanks,

Well, today I stopped by a small local coin shop in Odessa, Texas located off the beaten trail. Quite a few nice, interesting coins to view so I spent some time there. I came across this beautifully toned Long Island Commemorative and I just couldn't help myself. confused-smiley-013.gif

I wish the images showed the true brightness of the coin on the obverse, it really shines.

  4. Thanks Bobby,

The Reale was just loose in his desk. Of course very circulated and worn but when I photographed it, it just made it look great. Some of these circulated coins have such an interesting character about them.....

This Katherine 5 Kopecks was a paperweight on his desk (till I rescued it today acclaim.gif). A sister coin to this one is already an official part of the collection and is a double/over date 1785/6.

  5. I have not read nor seen any information about this year of merc. having an overdate. A lot of "apparent" overdates however can sometimes be atttributed to sheared metal aping during the minting process, giving the appearance of one digit over another. It can also sometimes be attributed to damage to the already struck coin after the minting process. I would find some literature dealing exclusively with Mercury Dime varieties. Just some thoughts.

  6. Wintston and Bob,

Thank you for the kind words, not trying to play possum, it is just taking awhile to go through the collection thouroughly and correctly.

Still learning, and most definitely enjoying this fantastic hobby. Also enjoy and am very happy to be able to share the results of my Father's efforts over the years with all on here.
