  1. You measured 26.55g and a 39.2mm diameter for a 1794 Flowing hair dollar with a mint spec of 26.96g and 39.5mm diameter, so at least the weight is likely out of spec with a 0.097g tolerance like similar sized dollars and half dollars of the period. And did you compare that to certified genuine examples, like the one Sandon provided, which just doesn't match up. You know what they say about things that seem too good to be true.
  2. I have also seen modern versions of the wax infused paper for "unsearched" Morgan dollar rolls, to give the appearance of being very old like the attached. You can buy batches of these old style roll papers today. And of course the "unsearched" and "original" rolls had the sucker "enders".
  3. Yes, should have been die or hub for the date punch which would create a raised area inside the "D".
  4. Actually a wrong planchet error does make more sense because it has happened before and might happen again where someone feeds the wrong planchets into a coining machine. But a random "2" on that coin just appearing out of nowhere where an overdate from a previous or upcoming year just couldn't happen makes it where you just can't wrap your head around that being a legitimate possibility. Have you picked up the coin and examined it with a 10x loupe or mag glass yet as recommended to see if you still see a "2" to the right of the mintmark and under the "5". I think that will solve the mystery of if it's pareidolia or monkey business of someone trying to create an overdate error after it left the mint.
  5. Okay, so someone called one of the moderators an "Emperor" and you decided to completely disrespect that person with a deeply personal attack writing about the persons wife having a boyfriend, getting a chuckle out of that. And you think someone just asking about that is triggering them. Now we are getting to the bottom of the ban.
  6. Where do you think the "2" you see came from given the 1955 date and the years before and after?
  7. That is better, but still a little bury when zooming in on the photo and it's ending up a low resolution image. Just make sure you are using a 100W desk lamp with the coin stationary on the desk, autofocus is on, you are resting your hand on something, and you are directly over and close to the coin when you take the photo. Play with that for a while until you get a very sharp photo that you can zoom in on without it getting blurry. Also get a 10x loupe or magnifying glass and hold the coim by the edges while you turn in to get the full effect of evaluating the coin without relying on photos which can be misleading or limiting sometimes. About the "2" you see next to the mintmark and partially under the "5", other indicators of a repunched date are not there, and the possibilities of a number for a different year being there from the mint just don't add up due to significant date differences. So if you are still seeing a "2" using a 10x mag glass then it's likely some type of post-mint damage or monkey business.
  8. Yes, you completely sucked me into that. James Bond and the MI6 Team would have been proud.
  9. I still don't understand how you are not still permanently banned from this forum, but then again it seems like you got some help from some mental health professionals and dont talk to Roosters any more ... well at least not on this forum anymore.
  10. I really don't care about forum labels, points, titles, medals etc. but I have been meaning to ask this and I am a little bored tonight so I will throw it out there. Why does my forum banner (attached) say both "Newbie" and "Seasoned Veteran" which is an oxymoron and just has to confuse people, including me? I noticed the same thing with members like @Sandon who I think is probably one of the most experienced members on this forum and often provided spot on detailed explanations or evaluations, so something is off. Also, I posted it here instead of in the "Ask NGC/NCS" Sub-Forum because I am really just having some fun with this and don't really care that much about it. In addition, how do I get the "Seasoned Veteran" changed to "Newbie" just for consistency and so I don't have to worry about people taking me seriously or putting any reliance on my posts.
  11. Try getting a photo as I noted of the entire coim that is not zoomed in like the other photos. And make sure we can zoom in the area in question without the images getting blurry. Then we will see what is visible from those photos
  12. Call me a sceptic but I would bet the family ranch that there is more to that ban then simply asking a question, particularly with those visceral comments.
  13. A toned coin is good for your Dansco book when you like it and you think it is good for that collection. Toning varies considerably, and different toning appeals to or alternatively is not liked by various collectors. For example I collect Morgans and the 1889 (P) Morgan JPM posted does not appeal to me, even though I have various toned Morgans in my collection, but obviously JPM likes it very much and probably other collectors like it too. I would follow the old school mantras of "collect what you like" and "know the coin before you buy the coin".
  14. The op's coin does look a little bit like a partially filled mintmark, where a piece of the inner part of the "D" may have chipped off the die or punch. It's very minor so no added value. Otherwise I agree with @Sandon . Talking about filled mintmarks see the attached 1976 (P) 25C scam coins listed on FleaBay as a "Rare 1776-1976 Bicentennial Quarter" with a "Filled D Mint Mark Error" initially listed for $800 each, which was dropped down to $200 each, and go figure "No returns". What a bargain, and this was Reported! https://www.ebay.com/itm/176006457303?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5338904992&toolid=20006&customid=255_255_255& For people that don't know there is no mintmark on the 1976 (P) 25C coins from Philadelphia, sometimes noted as (P) like I do, those are just regular Philly quarters being sold as error coins to rip people off. There is no "filled" mintmark from say a grease filled die as there are no disturbed areas around where the mintmark should have been or remnants of a mintmark ever being there. Here is the webpage on NGC for a normal 1976 Philly Quarter, and note there is no mintmark on those coins as it should be. https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-explorer/united-states/quarters/washington-quarters-1932-1998/15896/1776-1976-25c-ms/
  15. How did I know you were going to say that. That must grind your gears. It changes fast, but at one particular point what is depicted on the Morgan actually does kind of look like a cotton bolls, but maybe not exactly. See the attached comparison.
  16. Its not possible since they were using gang punches with the full date at that time. So there would be remnants of the full date, and it's in the wrong position too.
  17. Technically it's not spelled "blossom" as it is spelled "bolls", so I want my "nickle".
  18. Not so simple. My understanding is that the "cotton blossom" is the inner part of the white cotton flower when it first blooms, which does not look anything like what is depicted on the Morgan dollar. Once the flower self-pollinates the blossom dries up and falls off leaving the "cotton bolls" which is depicted on the Morgan dollar. Also the ANA grading standards refer to what is depicted on the Morgan dollar as "cotton bolls". However, collectors, the TPGs and sites like VAM World have used "cotton blossom" to describe what is depicted on the Morgan dollar so that just stuck and what is commonly used to identify that part of the coin, so I would tend to just go with that. See the attached photo of a cotton plant showing: (1) a white cotton flower with the inner cotton blossom after the plant first blooms at the top right; (2) an immature cotton bolls after the flower has self-pollinated and the blossom has dried up and fallen off at the top left; and (3) mature brown and while cotton bolls at the bottom, with the bolls on the left looking like what is depicted on the Morgan dollar.
  19. Using the phone light may be the issue. Try turning the phone light off and place the coin on a desk or table that has a swing arm or regular desk lamp with a 100W bulb. Then rest your hand on something and take the picture with the phone directly above and close to the coin. The protrusion may be a small die chip or a small piece of copper which got knocked off that or another copper coin and ended up there. That may just be the lighting again or a stain that your mind is projecting as a "2", similar to seeing things in clouds. There is no way there would be the remnants of a "2" in that area. Again, you need to put away the scope and use a loupe or mag glass.
  20. I don't have any problem saying that dprince or davidprince is a clueless fraud and numismatic scam artist because it's the truth based on the misinformation presented in this forum and coins posted that were counterfeits or had misattributed varieties that he went on to sell on eBay completely ignoring comments to that effect here. What he has been posting is in effect shooting himself in the foot, but he doesn't realized that which maybe is a good thing if he is continually called out on that because less knowledgeable collectors are less likely to be ripped off if they do a simple search as JPM noted related to some of the things posted.
  21. Why is that? Do you think it should have been "Right Facing Inner Feather" to be more technically correct?
  22. I think your right, plus I don't have any "nickles".
  23. I know how frustrating it can be when you don't see anything wrong with a coin and it comes back with less than 70. But they are very picky and don't hand out 70's like cupcakes. And for more recent coins from the mint the quality has taken a nosedive.
  24. Hey, I like the French cause they saved our butts during the Revolutionary War and while we were growing after Independence. Then we saved their butts twice during the World Wars so I think we are even steven. But I do not get why they don't like Americans so much. Trust me they don't, I have been to France.
  25. A 10x magnifying glass with built-in LED lights. I use it so much I am on my 2nd one. I have a 40x loupe and scope but I only use them for counterfeit detection and variety attribution confirmations. See this article ... https://www.pcgs.com/news/tools-of-a-professional-coin-grader For photos I just use my phone, but I keep it close and directly above the coin and rest my hand on something.
