  1. On my nickels I set my mark at 30% and I walk ..If it is a hard to find coin I may go to 50% but that's it. then I walk....That's why I still have a lot of dates to fill..LoL. On my Morgan's I was getting the easy MS ones at 30 and 50 % but in the last year because of the tougher dates I have been running between 60 and 80% of high retail. My No 1 rule is...There will always be another coin down the road to bid on, if I live long enough to see it.
  2. I agree, I have a few Top Pop Nickels that I have picked up cheap. Not that I was looking for them, I just got lucky on the bid or finding them on a shelf in a shop somewhere.
  3. A price guide is a reference, most of the time High or over priced for the dealer to use. Although some dealers go by auction prices and e-bay if the price is higher .If a coin is not very old it may not have a price guide yet. Remember that the price guide may not be up to date also.
  4. Yes I have seen this coin bid, It is currently biding in the $1500 range. As you may or may not know I am building a Nickel Set and I would never bid on this kind of a coin, to rich for me . Like Greenstang has pointed out . To a lot of bidders money is no object.
  5. I agree this was jeweler's sample to show different carvings for silver rings or wrist bands. The coin is worth melt unless you can find a buyer that likes the PMD.
  6. Greenstang is correct, there is no way to tell. Each coin stands on it's own merits there is no one shoe fits all. What I may consider a nice coin he could dislike its looks. What I think is worth $50 is only worth $20 to someone trying to resell it.
  7. Yes at $175 give or take it would be worth the cost if you intend to sell it at any time. I would not know how much the other costs would run you.
  8. The coin has some discoloration on the reverse anyway so it is not at it's full value and would need conservation that may not work. It may not be worth the cost to re-holder the coin ,only you would know that.
  9. Hi Chris. When looking for error coins remember that the coin must be in good shape to start with. Finding one is hard enough and if it is all scratched up it will not be worth anything other than face value.
  10. It looks like it was on a piece of cloth for many years and it corroded or picked up some kind of reaction to the material and it stained and pitted the coin bad.
  11. I wanted to say welcome but I see you have been a member for 4 years. I do like it I think it is a unique set, it just would not work for me.
  12. I did look it up but the NGC value is only the value price of one coin.
  13. Well that is kinda cool. That is a special set. I would think it would be a hard to sell item. Something that would sit in the safe.
  14. It looks like a worn die and then it got some grease stuck in the 1 , 9 and 2 on the date. It is worth keeping it in a flip as a grease filled die coin but not grading. The coin has to much damage for a good grade.
  15. There area lot of coins out there with die cracks, just look at all the Morgan VAM,s and you will see many. I have quit a few nickels and cents with cracks it is fun to save them but I do not think that the crack will change the price of the coin.
  16. Ya a bit shiny but .You know after looking again at the reverse of the coin looks like a MS FS coin ? So It could be a die cap coin that was not out in the wild for very long. Oh and welcome abcd43130... Can you see a the date in the coin.?
  17. I agree with Sandon's reply struck through grease and also someone may have polished it up.
  18. I do want to say that a lot of coins we see on this site were coins used for every day purchases. These coins were not treated as collectables it was just spending money. Placing a coin on a counter it was subject to being dragged to the edge to be able to pick it up and put it away. So sometimes the high areas have lines of scratches that show up on the coins. It may not always be a cleaned coin just a used coin. LoL
  19. I am glad you are having a wonderful time with your Dad. I am sure he is also just as excited that you have takin a interest in coins. I would take your time and inspect the coins slowly learn what dates to keep a eye out for. If you have some war nickels without large mint marks over Monticello than please post them so we can have a look. Feel free to post any coin you have a question on just crop the shot with your phone take a shot of the obverse and reverse keeping the phone about 4 to 6" away and then zoom to get the full coin in the screen. Just like the ones you did above. and start a new thread for each coin.
  20. It is hard to tell with the photo on a angle cant see the 9 and 6 very good but it looks like a small date.
