Thanks Jason for the reply. The ultrasonic cleaner you mentioned rang a bell from a long time ago post I made regarding a very odd finish on the surface of a pre 82' Linc. I believe I remember DWLange replied to my post and said the surface of my copper Linc Cent could have possibly been exposed to an ultrasonic cleaner which totally messed up the coin. Heat will do it as well. I too would think an ultrasonic cleaner would work but if there is a possibility of damaging the coin I may be a bit hesitant to try that method. I'll try to find that post and put it up here. Thanks.

Ok.... no pics at the moment (sorry). I need an expert to chime in on my question which I think I already know the answer to. I found what I am fairly certain to be the coin in the title of this post while going through a friends spare change in his truck console (yes, he's aware I was rummaging around....ha). The Cent has just enough green crud on IGWT, you know what I mean... all that stuff that tends to gravitate and stick right to the sides of the letters that an acetone bath doesn't remove, and I need to physically remove it somehow in order to see the very faint doubling of this specific variety which is already difficult to see at best without the crud. The doubling of the eyelid is spot on and I can clearly see it which is an exact match. I am pretty sure I can see some faint doubling in the letters on the obverse typical for this variety. So...... my question: This coin is nowhere near MS condition. I would put it somewhere in the VF to EF range which obviously lowers the value of this coin exponentially. Being that it's already in rough shape (get ready to throw up now, I'll wait for your response), has anyone experimented cleaning with a soft bristle toothbrush or possibly a q-tip in trying to gently clean off this type of debris buildup? NO WAY would I ever attempt to clean a valuable coin but being that this Cent has seen some miles I'm thinking it's not really going to matter in devaluing the coin simply based on its current condition. Bottom line is this- I can't make out all the doubling as it stands so to make sure this coin is the real deal I'm going to have to get this stuff off somehow to confirm. Your opinions are valued. P.S.- It took me a minute to even get up the nerve to ask on the forum about 'cleaning' a coin in this manner, taboo........

I may be completely off base here as I am by no means an expert in any sense of the imagination when it comes buying or selling but thought I'd throw this out there. What I do to get a reasonable value of a coin is to look at past GC or HA sales and see what similar coins have sold for. Like QA said, I think pop reports are valuable as well in determining how many are out there that have been examined by TPG's. I look at it as a supply and demand issue, obviously.

I looked into this when I read your quote. The coins I purchased were from L&C Coins but I do see there is an LCR Coins as well. I assume you were talking about the Morgan set you looked into and weren't referring to my opening post and picture on this thread.

Well...., my three coins arrived USPS today back home in Georgia but I'm not there to see them right now (darn it). Took a three day fishing trip to Gulf Shores with a good friend and I'm now back at his lake house in Alabama till Wednesday. I was pretty successful catching fish off my buddy's boat but he wasn't, sadly. Probably not a polite thing to "out fish" your friend on his own boat..... but we had a blast other than getting whipped on my hand from a stingray's tail I was getting off of my friends hook for him. First time we've taken his center console out to the Gulf and it did very well. Got yelled at by the Coast Guard while doing a radio check on a brand new marine radio setup we bought on the way down to the Gulf. The dang owner's manual (a NICE Cobra marine grade radio might I add) explicitly said it was ok to do a simple radio check on channel 16 as long as there isn't any other traffic on this channel which I know is the main priority distress channel for the USCG. I need to contact Cobra electronics and tell them they need to revise the information in their owner's manual........ Oh well.... no harm done and I'm sure I gave numerous other boaters a good laugh when the Coast Guard put me in my place over the radio (glad I made someone's day). I'll post some pics of the coins I bought when I get back home to share the quality of them if in fact they are worthy. Like I said, they weren't expensive at all but I just wanted a couple of slabbed MS69's for comparison purposes, one from NGC and one from PCGS, while I learn more about the process and intricacies of coin grading.

Sorry for any miscommunication. I am not an Alabama resident. I am from, born and raised, and live in North Georgia. I have a very good friend who has a lake house on Lake Martin near Dadeville. I visit this place regularly and would gladly live here on this lake because it is absolutely beautiful. But..... I love my North Georgia Mountains. Thanks for all the replies regarding my question.

Hey y'all (it's a Southern term...) I'm going to start a new thread, my own post, with a question (sorry if I hijacked this post.....I don't think I did.). I'm back in Abalamaville (new home to the VKurt) and I'm starting to like this place especially if you could only see the house I'm staying at here on Lake Martin. I got to looking at some emails on the computer for boat and jet ski, I mean coin, sales. Going to start a new post about a coin dealer/online sales that hopefully I can get some feedback on and if they are reputable. Never bought anything online before but they have some decent looking stuff that interests me (if only I had the budget). I look forward to hearing some good reliable feedback. Thanks!

I am seeing a completely worn out die. You can also see DDD on the O of ONE which is very close, and adjacent, to the E in EPU. Just Die Deterioration Doubling IMHO.

I have to agree with Just Bob on this one. I just read this thread in its entirety and I believe you may have mistakenly mis-read VKurtB's post. It was definitely not meant towards you Melissa in anyway whatsoever. Sometimes you just have to read each and every post and the comments that are "quoted" from, and by, other members in order to follow and fully understand the conversation. VKurtB did not do anything wrong here.

Hey guys. I know I commented on the OP's question about this one. I zoomed in on the pics and then compared them in depth to all three major cross reference sites. I am pretty convinced this is FS-102 even without seeing a clear pic of Linc's eyelid (that Coinbuf requested) where there should also be prominent doubling but then again it may not be evident due to circulation wear or die state. IGWT looks identical to the cross references I examined and the LI in LIBERTY appears to be an exact match, especially the I with the very noticeable notch. Yes, I do believe there is some DDD evident on the OP's coin due to the later die stage. But what am I missing here that makes you believe, in your assessment and truly valued opinions which I totally respect, that this is not FS-102? I'm just curious if I am missing something here. I am very familiar with DDD and MD but this one, to me, does not fit the bill for a completely worn out die which would cause DDD. The doubling appears to be very prominent IMHO when examined closely. Thanks!

Nice coin displayed by the OP (no offense James Z.)! Definitely a DDO on the 1955 Linc. It's not the holy grail FS-101 of the 55' DDO but it's no doubt a doubled die. I too believe it is FS-102. Maybe a mid to slightly later stage but a very good find nevertheless!

You beat me to it QA. This Quarter took a direct hit from a Red Rider (You'll shoot your eye out) BB gun (Anybody remember "The Christmas Story"?). The first shot was dead on.. the second shot on the Quarter was, well.... OK.... I could go on and on but the first Quarter in this post is simply PMD. Welcome to the forum Jimez1.

Welcome to the Forum Darjomar! The Lincoln Shield Cent series are about some of the hardest coins on the planet to take good clear photos of and there is quite honestly not a lot of Doubled Dies in this series that are very collectible or worth much $$. The 2014 DDO is pretty much the "holy grail" in this series but still only worth a small premium. Their glare, especially the new very shiny ones, makes it almost impossible to take a good clear picture without reflection which causes a considerable amount of distortion. You are not the only one who has had trouble with this series and their photography. Like it has been said above, photography and lighting is an art, but more so for these crazy copper plated and shiny Shields. Your example is a normal LSC.

I couldn’t agree with you more about how such things does change a person in many many different ways. I think I have commented in the past about myself but I also remember some of the other stuff you have had to deal with. We WILL both make it through all of this because we are BOTH stubborn and hardheaded!! (Some things just won’t ever change….lol).

You are a pretty tough guy and I'm sure a lot of, if not all of, people would agree. I truly hope 'b' is your solution and "not all that soon"! I am sure that will be the case for you VKurtB. I am very familiar with aortic issues, especially a dissected aorta, which my father did not survive. No joke. Aside from that, I am not akin to an ascending aortic aneurysm. That cannot be good.
