Usually with modern coins the varieties are just label varieties and have nothing to do with the coin itself. I’m assuming the FM means first mintage. Seems that these FM coins are graded in the OGP instead of just slabbing the coin. Here is an example.

....and what does "First Day of Mintage" mean? Is the encapsulated coin from the pieces struck on the first day coins were produced? How was that determined? (If it's like the Kennedy halves that were "certified" it's a false certification.)

I really ought to respond with a "no comment," as I have nothing nice to add to the conversation.  I am, after all, in the estimation of one member, a "Danny Downer," but that would only deprive you, the membership, of hearing what my upright, blameless and without sin" sister had to say in appraising my choice of girlfriend (briefly, a female "Jim" to the tenth exponential power).
I invited my sister to lunch in a "transitional" neighborhood undergoing gentrification and revitalization. She was then working at the city's Department of Investigation and arrived promptly and as one would expect in business attire.
She asked me where my friend was, a drug addict who had broken night and very likely was in a state of withdrawal, lying on a bench nearby.
She turned to me and with pronounced assertiveness said: "I'm not going anywhere with THAT!"  I told her she didn't have to, and quietly walked away.
Years later, after the woman's death, surprisingly not from a drug overdose or AIDS -- but murder, still unsolved from 1986, the matter was brought up, and this was her sober analysis upon reflection... "There was nothing wrong with her, but there's something wrong with you!". In other words, you come from a good family, you're a college graduate had a good job working on Wall Street, your own apartment, etc. "She is what she is and likely had always been... what's YOUR excuse?"
I had none.  End of story.

(...as you may know, you've broken my broken leg three times in a row... that's a lot of lay-up time...these census reports (and valuation reports all carry disclaimers... you know, we are not responsible for this or that... values fluctuate with the market, etc.,...my preliminary advice is use them as a persiscope...they let you know "there" are mutations out there... malheureusement, there is not enough time, manpower or bandwidth available to accommodate coin connoisseurs like yourself to describe each and every variety for every little niche of U.S. coinage to everyone's satisfaction.  The primary purpose of this device is to inform the collector that varieties either exist or do not exist and if you choose to exercise an available option, it's right there: TAP "Shop Now!" in the nice convenient blue box situated right under the multi-color banner: "Find it on eBay."
Sorry you had to wait three hours for a reply to your Topic, but think of it this way, you lucked out....out of the thousands of lurkers out there, you got me first!

🐓:  By PM, I am going to assume we aren't talking Private Messaging here.
Q.A.:  No, indeedy. Both members of good standing know very well every obsolete coin is fair game: mercs, perks and Turks. The whole kit 'n' kaboodle. That goes for the BIG bills, too.  Who's going to turn down a McKinley, Cleveland, Madison or Chase?  NOBODY. Even an ignoramus like me is going to say, "Just a moment, ma'am..." And excuse myself, rush out, and rustle up the change to give the little old lady, which invariably always turns out to be a happy, satisfied, repeat customer.
Now, on to the matter at hand, forget Morgans, that's novice nite. Every one of those bullion coins of which you speak has a DENOMINATION on it. Now whether it would be inadvisable to spend one at face value is an entirely different matter.

I rest my case. Believe what you will. I don't see someone "fixing" this coin after it was heated. Why would you do that? Also, the colors from heating would not be removed by acid if heat damaged because those colors are due to molecular re alignments of the metal itself from the heating and the "bluing" is deep within the surface of the coin. I've collected these struck through grease coins as I've come across them. It matches many of the requirements. Cheers

The OP got a slice of what he requested from the members of the forum. And as such, what makes this one different from any other raw coin that has been posted here? Most times, there is no unanimous decision on the grade of raw coins posted here, and there are even occasional disagreements among members on the grade listed on the label inside of a slabbed coin, so I am not sure where you are going with this. There is bound to be a difference of opinion of grade on any raw coin regardless of type, date, and condition and that comes from each objective opine as viewed by many different people with many different levels of expertise and different levels of knowledge of each type and series, and even understanding of minting processes. In all, this sounds "normal" to me to have a range of opinions with a corresponding range of possible values to go with it.
To say the OP received no help is simply not true regardless if the opinions given are wide ranging.

Proof gold, used to calibrate chemical assays, is 1.000 fine - absolutely pure. In the old days, the Philadelphia Mint's Assay Dept. produced proof gold in small quantities for use by the other mints and assay offices.

Henri Charriere reacted to VKurtB in Never clean your coins. Wrong. Never Improperly clean your coins. Lesson 1: Using Acetone to clean a coin.
If only people had the discipline to follow sound advice, and not just pay it lip service, this hobby might have a decent future. But no, that’s not how the real numismatic world works any more. Everybody is all hellbent  on immediate gratification.
    Consider these:
    1) Buy the book before the coin.
    2) Never clean any valuable coin without FIRST experimenting on low value coins.
    3) Buy low, sell high.
    4) If it seems too good to be true, it’s NOT TRUE.
All of these ideas need to be strictly heeded. If you can’t or won’t, you are not worth my time. I just turned 69. My time is valuable, and scarce.

Q.A.:   I would like to have the unique 1908 St.-Gaudens half eagle pattern which was the subject of @RWB 's Topic, "Destruction of 1908 Indian and St. Gaudens half eagle patterns," Mar. 10.
I believe it to be in the constructive possession of my most faithful follower who for the past 37 years refuses to confirm or deny its very existence..  (As a practical matter he has adamantly refused to authorize any photographs taken of it.)
In the alternative, I would be interested in acquiring either of the two French 20-francs gold roosters, dated 1908 and 1912 and graded [and cross-graded] an impressive and unprecedented MS-68 by the top two TPGSs
My faithful follower, while readily acknowledging the coins exist, has stated on a number of occasions that they are not for sale now nor will they be in the forseeable future and has declined to have a professional photographer take pictures of them under any circumstances. He has also declined to disclose their certification numbers.
